  • Is Nick Pope a lever raiser for Newcastle United?

Is Nick Pope a lever raiser for Newcastle United?

Nick Pope has finalised his £10m move to Newcastle United a few days ago. Newcastle moved swiftly for Pope after Burnley went down. The move suits both parties really well, Pope gets to be a part of a new exciting project with huge potential and Newcastle get a top-quality GK with years of experience at this level and one who’s in his prime years.

    A SOLID FIT

Newcastle lineup in a 4-3-3 and defend quite deep. With the arrival of Pope and potentially Botman, Newcastle could gain some advantage in pushing up the pitch. Pope isn’t the perfect sweeper-keeper but he completes a lot of actions outside of his area. Both players add size to their backline and dealing with crosses should look better next season. Nick Pope’s strengths lie mostly in high claims, good shot-stopping and reactions on and off his line.

This is Newcastle’s 5th signing out of 6 (since winter) with vast Premier League experience under their belt after Trippier, Burn, Targett, and Wood which gives us an idea of what Howe wants his team core to be made of. It’s something to keep an eye on in the future.

IS NICK POPE ACTUALLY AN UPGRADE?

Rating GKs is tough on the eye. Teams play different styles and judging a GK’s game is difficult business until they’re in an environment where ball playing (for example’s sake) or else is what’s specifically asked of them. However, we can make comparisons between GKs quite easily with the amount of statistical data available out there these days.

Martin Dubravka has served Newcastle well over the years, there’s no doubt about that. A solid GK who’s been through ups and downs with Newcastle. But he isn’t getting any younger at 33 and when an opportunity like Pope arises, you pounce. Let’s take a look at where does he fit and how both compare.

    NICK POPE VS MARTIN DUBRAVKA

    NICK-POPE-VS-MARTIN-DUBRAVKA-COMPARISON

    SHOT STOPPING

Across the last 3 seasons, Pope has on average saved 0.22 goals a game. Dubravka ranks much higher in that regard, saving his team a whopping 0.53 goals a game.

Pope has conceded 134 from an xG of 138.5, with 4.5 goals saved in that time.

Dubravka on the other hand conceded 112 goals from an xG of 123.5, with 11.5 goals saved in that time.

Here’s how they compare this season:

    NICK-POPE-VS-MARTIN-DUBRAVKA-COMPARISON
    @thefanalytics

    PASSING

Howe isn’t afraid to play ball in his own half, starting from the keeper. But are Pope/Dubravka one of those keepers?

Pope completes 15 passes (49%) per 90 while Dubravka stands at 21 (63%).

With Pope as the better kicker, he gets more distance on his completed passes with a differential between the two of 23 yards in Pope’s favour.

These metrics have a lot to do with what’s asked of them. Judging Pope’s short passing game is something we can only fully judge with time in a passing side but don’t expect Pope to be an amazing short passer under pressure.

    SWEEPING

This is an area where Pope gazumps Dubravka. He isn’t afraid to rush out when his team gets caught higher up the pitch and numbers back it up.

Pope ranks among the elite (99th percentile) when it comes to defensive actions outside of the penalty area with a 1.75 actions per90. He also goes quite high up the pitch with his attempts at an average of 18 yards away from the goal.

Dubravka ranks a lot lower here with only 0.35 actions per90. He also intervenes a lot deeper than Pope at 13 yards from goal.

    CONCLUSION

Martin Dubravka is a fine GK, but Nick Pope has an edge over him. And he’s 3 years younger.

Could Newcastle have done better? Probably. But Nick Pope is a safe option, he doesn’t need any time to adjust and slots in straight away. A commander of his box with a huge wingspan and great reflexes. He’s also surprisingly strong when sweeping from behind the backline, something Dubravka isn’t comfortable with. Decent deal all in all.

  • Fabian Ruiz: Which club suits best to his interests?

Fabian Ruiz: Which club suits best to his interests?

Fabian Ruiz has been a subject of interest for the Premier League clubs this summer with Newcastle United and Arsenal leading the race to sign the midfielder.

According to Italian news outlet Corriere dello Sport, clubs of the English top-flight are keen to make a swoop for the Serie A midfielder in the transfer window. The report claims that Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Arsenal are in the fray for a potential transfer.

However, the Magpies and the Gunners are leading the race for the Napoli midfielder. Fabian Ruiz’s future appears to be up for grabs as the Premier League clubs are circling to plot a transfer this summer.

The Napoli ace amassed seven goals and provided five assists in 38 appearances for the club across all competitions this season.

The midfielder can adapt to playing in the defensive role and the attacking role while his preferred position remains the central role. The 26-year-old garnered impressive performances at the heart of the midfield.

In every 90 minutes in the Italian League, Ruiz averaged 1.0 key passes, 0.7 interceptions, 1.7 tackles, and 1.0 clearances on the pitch. Capable of making crucial interceptions, the midfielder does not shy away from making potentially dangerous tackles.

90.5% of his attempted passes came from interchanging possession with his teammates from midfield. The Serie A ace enjoys playing long ball passes and long shots from a far-off range.

Which club would he fit well in?

    Embed from Getty Images

The 26-year-old would undoubtedly boost the midfield of any club he joins. However, not all the clubs interested in him would fit him well in the squad.

Ruiz could be a good fit at Newcastle United because of the certain qualities he possesses and the need for him in the midfield. Magpies’ gaffer Eddie Howe is looking to bolster his midfield with a profile that can adapt to playing the central and the attacking role.

He has great vision to create chances in the final third, an element missing in the Newcastle setup last season. Moreover, the Magpies did not attempt too many long-range shots while the Napoli midfielder enjoys playing the long shots.

The Spaniard also does not shy away from clearing his lines in the back when the opposition is attacking. His ability to sense the attacking threat created by the opposition and make interceptions at crunch moments is something Howe’s side will look forward to.

With some of his best years still ahead of him, joining Newcastle next season could be a sensible move as he would have some time to improve under Howe. At 26, the Tyneside giants will look to secure his services considering his vast experience in different competitions.

Moreover, at United, manager Erik ten Hag has other names on his mind with Frenkie de Jong as his favorite this summer to sign. Donny van de Beek’s return to the Old Trafford appears to be on the horizon. And with Bruno Fernandes taking up the attacking midfield role more often, Ruiz’s inclusion could see him play second fiddle to Fernandes.

With Arsenal, they are interested in a wide range of midfielders following the acquisition of Fabio Vieira, and for Ruiz to get into Mikel’s Arsenal there will have to be some significant departure in the middle of the park – especially if Youri Tielemans is on his way to the Emirates.

However, it remains to be seen what transpires in the transfer window as Newcastle are the frontrunners.

  • Sven Botman alternatives for Newcastle United this summer

Sven Botman alternatives for Newcastle United this summer

Having comfortably avoided relegation following the appointment of Eddie Howe as club manager for the second half of last season, Newcastle United emerge amongst the clubs expected to splash notable money in the transfer window this summer. With the manager likely to aim for a top-half finish provided he is backed in the transfer market, the Magpies will be keen on significantly improving their quality in personnel ahead of the new season.

While the club made former loanee Matt Targett their first signing this summer, Newcastle are expected to gradually increase their business by addressing numerous positions within the squad over the coming months. Amongst them, LOSC Lille centre-back Sven Botman emerges as the foremost name, with the 22-year-old having previously been strongly linked with a move to the club last January.

Now, however, with reports suggesting the player’s preference to seek a move to AC Milan over Newcastle despite the former, reportedly, offering a significant transfer fee, Botman remains unlikely to land at St. James’ Park hitherto. Nevertheless, given the quality of promising and mature centre-backs in the market this summer, Newcastle are likely to find an ideal centre-back elsewhere across Europe to supplement their ambitions for the forthcoming campaign.

Evan Ndicka (Current Club: Eintracht Frankfurt, Valuation: €30-35m)

Amongst the Bundesliga’s best centre-backs in the last couple of seasons, 22-year-old Evan Ndicka is likely to have earned himself an ambitious move this summer. Having been a vital part of Frankfurt’s success in recent seasons including their successful 21/22 UEFA Europa League campaign, the youngster has rightfully garnered the interest of several clubs moving into the transfer window.

Towering in his demeanour, Ndicka boasts a notable recovery pace balanced by his 1v1 defensive efficiency and exceptional timing of the tackle. The centre-back also emerges as a clinical goal contributor having amassed four goals and the same number of assists for Frankfurt last season. Moreover, possessing dominant aerial ability alongside familiarity with being deployed in a back-three system in addition to standing in the top 10% rankings for centre-backs vis-à-vis blocks (2.27) and aerial duels (4.60) per 90 minutes, Ndicka is most likely to improve the Magpies’ command across the backline under Howe’s management.

However, with several clubs expected to tussle for his signature provided he seeks a move this summer, Newcastle will be wary of overspending on targets. Nevertheless, given his world-class potential and ability to contribute across both sides of the pitch, the 22-year-old could certainly end up at St. James Park’ this summer.

Kalidou Koulibaly (Current Club: Napoli, Valuation: €30-35m)

    Embed from Getty Images

Although having gone under the radar in recent campaigns, 30-year-old Senegalese centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly retains the potential to significantly improve a team’s defensive outcome when included in the first XI. Having been amongst the most talked about centre-halves in recent seasons, Koulibaly is likely to end up signing a new contract with Napoli or seeking a change of clubs ahead of the new campaign.

Boasting an imposing physique, the 30-year-old has established himself as a centre-back thriving in an aggressive role whilst also boasting impeccable ball carrying and passing skills. Moreover, although having lost a yard moving into a testing phase of his career, Koulibaly makes up for his weaknesses with positionality and the ability to supplement a high-pressing system.

Given Newcastle’s need for bolstering experience in the backline, the Senegalese centre-back emerges as a figure capable of providing much-needed balance and reliability in Howe’s system. However, given his age and presumed decline in output over the coming years, it remains to be seen if the Magpies regard Koulibaly as a viable alternative to Botman over the summer window.

Josko Gvardiol (Current Club: RB Leipzig, Valuation: €40-50m)

    Embed from Getty Images

While only 20 years old, Gvardiol established himself as a regular international for Croatia whilst being a regular part of the Leipzig XI since moving to the Bundesliga club in 2020. Renowned for his ambitious style of play, the youngster is likely to make a move provided a notable club meets Leipzig’s valuation for the player this summer.

A progressive defender known for his tendency to advance the ball up the pitch, Gvardiol ranked in the 95th percentile (5.01) for progressive carries and the 96th for touches in the attacking third (9.17) per 90 minutes last season. Moreover, applying 13.48 pressures (84th percentile) per 90 minutes, the Croatian international emerges as an aggressive tackler and interceptor boasting excellent underlying numbers in either statistic. An exceptional passer with quick feet and a natural tendency to involve himself in attacking transitions, Gvardiol emerges as a well-rounded centre-back likely to change the dynamic of a team’s backline.

With Newcastle keen on signing young talents capable of supplementing their long-term vision for the club, Gvardiol emerges as an ideal centre-back for the Magpies. Additionally, suited to a high-pressing system, the 20-year-old is likely to seamlessly fit within Newcastle’s backline. However, having only been at Leipzig for two seasons, the German club are likely to demand a big fee if they are to sanction a sale for Gvardiol this summer.

  • Newcastle United eyeing next Luis Diaz in Braga’s Roger Fernandes

Newcastle United eyeing next Luis Diaz in Braga’s Roger Fernandes

Newcastle United are focusing on their next transfer target following the confirmation of Matt Targett joining the club on a permanent transfer. The Magpies are reportedly interested in signing Braga’s winger, Roger Fernandes. According to Sports Witness, the offer on the table is around 25 million euros, including add-ons.

    Background

Fernandez, who was born in Bissau, Guinea Bissau’s capital, debuted for Braga’s first squad on July 31, 2021, at the age of 15 years, 8 months, and 12 days, becoming by far the youngest player to debut in the competitive Portuguese Primeira Liga.

Roger Fernandez scored his first goal for Braga in a Portuguese Cup match against low-league team Moitense on October 17, 2021, becoming the club’s and Portuguese football’s youngest goal scorer. Fernandes, at the age of 16 years, one month, and 19 days, scored and broke the record held by Gonçalo Brando since 2003. With 17 years and nine days on his debut in the Primeira Liga against FC Porto in 2003, the former central defender held the record until Roger Fernandes toppled him.

[ABOVE] Roger’s goal for Braga which made him the youngest scorer in Portuguese football’s history.

Roger Fernandes – Luis Diaz 2.0?

    Embed from Getty Images

The Braga kid has been touted as the next Luis Diaz for his playing style and attributes. The Columbian, Diaz, joined Liverpool in January, primarily as a backup, and had an immediate impact in the Premier League. He scored four goals and added three assists in 13 league appearances, with a superb SofaScore rating of 7.23. Should the transfer happen, Roger Fernandes will have a chance to follow in the footsteps of the ex-Porto man.

Fernandes, who is now 16, has made seven appearances for Braga’s first team throughout the Portuguese league and has piqued the interest of various clubs around Europe with his strong early-career displays. With a Sofascore rating of 6.77, the wonderkid has played just 113 minutes of football in the Portuguese top flight. Despite having such limited playing time, the left-winger has scored two goals in the top flight.

Braga’s coach, Carlos Carvalhal, when asked about Roger Fernandes in 2021, said, “He studied the team he wanted to play for! He studied the basic ideas and then looked for the position of the player playing in his position. I’ve never faced a situation like this, but I understand that this should serve as a positive example for those who want to play in their club’s first team one day. I have no idea if young Roger will be a real player!

“But he’s on the right track, there’s no doubt about that,” said an impressed Carlos.

    Verdict

At 16 years of age, Roger Fernandes has already seen a bid from the Dutch giants, Ajax, rejected.  However, a move to the Premier League at such a young age like 16 can be a bit tricky. However, Roger, who can play on either flank, has already tasted some experience in European football as his side competed in last season’s UEFA Europa League. The Tynesiders are investing in the future. And Fernandes might be a terrific squad option for Eddie Howe in the coming years, potentially developing into a superstar. Even if he doesn’t, his age and potential mean Newcastle United will be able to sell him for a good price in the future.

  • Newcastle United can walk away from Sven Botman deal following Lille’s ill tactics

Newcastle United can walk away from Sven Botman deal following Lille’s ill tactics

Things looked all set and done between AC Milan and Lille for the acquisition of Sven Botman when Newcastle United stepped in at the eleventh hour to not only break off such suggestions but also emerge favourites on the other side of the hill.

Sven Botman is regarded as a first-choice transfer target for Stefano Pioli to bolster his already water-tight defence since the conclusion of the winter transfer window, meanwhile, the Geordies did try to get the deal over the line in January – but nothing materialized for either the Reds from Milan or for Eddie Howe’s men (Newcastle United, at that time, settled for Dan Burn instead). And this one was surely going to be some saga coming into summer.

It hasn’t disappointed, has it? – Well, the Magpies are surely disappointed in Lille after the French side changed their mind over accepting a £30million bid which was followed by raising the asking price to £36million. The French clubs have a reputation of playing hard-ball over transfers, and Newcastle are ‘extremely annoyed’ over Lille’s negative tactics to raise a bid for Sven Botman.

    Embed from Getty Images

The Telegraph report that Newcastle United will now offer a ‘take it or leave it’ proposal for Sven Botman, and there has been no latest reports over AC Milan’s stance on the current situation and their intentions to pursue a transfer for the Dutchman.

More this one rumbles on, the more the possibilities of Newcastle walking away. They have set a standard that despite all the investments made – they will not be bullied into any deal. We’ve seen Eddie Howe & Co. walk away from the pursuit of Ivan Toney (quoted £50m), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (quoted £60m), and Jack Harrison (quoted £30m) after quotations that the board felt were to get the club ripped. Such is the case with Sven Botman as well.

If Lille are persistent with their hardball tactics to up the price, I believe Newcastle would not mind moving on to other names just like they did in January.

  • Sven Botman on the move – Where does the Dutchman fit best amongst his Premier League suitors?

Sven Botman on the move – Where does the Dutchman fit best amongst his Premier League suitors?

Amongst the hottest prospects in the transfer market this summer, Lille centre-back Sven Botman continues to attract the interest of numerous clubs across the continent, with the Dutchman likely to make an ambitious move this summer. Having been linked to several clubs since bursting onto the scene in recent seasons, the 22-year-old is expected to make the switch to the Premier League amidst strong interest from the likes of Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester United, amongst other clubs, this summer.

Moreover, having shown promising potential in recent seasons, the Dutch centre-back is likely to emerge among the most talked-about transfer, provided he seals a move to the Premier League this summer. With Botman likely to generate a bidding war amongst clubs interested in his services, the player will be keen on securing a move suited to his development, with many of England’s top-flight clubs likely to provide him with a platform to shine next season.

    Newcastle United

Botman’s most likely destination this summer, the Magpies will be looking to significantly bolster their squad as they aim for a top-half finish next season. Having been favourites to land the Dutchman last January, this time around, an ambitious Newcastle will be keen on securing his services ahead of the upcoming campaign.

With the club having impressively avoided relegation this season, Eddie Howe will be keen on receiving the backing needed to fulfil the club’s ambitions next season. In Botman, the manager is guaranteed to have an imposing presence in the backline – capable of spraying passes across the field – whilst serving as a menace to cope with on set-pieces owing to the Dutchman’s physical strength and aerial ability.

Moreover, with the potential to play on either side of the backline, Botman is expected to offer indispensable versatility and reliability in dealing with high balls alongside triggering counter-attacks owing to his long-range passing ability. Having shown genuine interest in securing his services, the Dutchman is likely to land in Newcastle if he moves to the Premier League, with the club keen on acquiring a marquee centre-back this summer.

    Tottenham Hotspur

With Antonio Conte keen on challenging for silverware next season, Spurs are expected to spend a substantial amount on transfers this summer. Having, reportedly, made an initial enquiry for the player, the Lilywhites remain keen on securing a centre-back this summer, with Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni having emerged as a priority target for the North-London club in recent weeks.

Given Botman’s quality and the Spurs’ need in acquiring a left-footed ball-playing centre-back the 22-year-old Dutchman emerges as a tempting prospect for Conte’s project at the club. While the likes of Ben Davies and Eric Dier emerged as notable contributors to the team securing a top-four finish last season, Botman, arguably, offers the additional potential to a side in need of a refreshing and solid centre-back partnership over the coming seasons. Moreover, given the prospect of being paired alongside Cristian Romero at Spurs, Botman is only expected to improve his overall game under Conte’s tutelage.

While Spurs remain keen on securing the signing of Bastoni from Inter Milan, Botman is likely to remain on the club’s list of targets this summer. Provided the North-London club fail to land their preferred centre-back targets, a move to Tottenham could certainly materialise for the 22-year-old Dutch centre-back over the summer transfer window.

    Manchester United

With centre-back having emerged as a priority position for Erik Ten Hag this summer, United are likely to recruit a promising defender ahead of the upcoming campaign. While the Red Devils remain focused on Jurrien Timber and Pau Torres as their preferred options at bolstering the backline, a late move for Botman could certainly be on the cards if United fail to land their foremost targets this summer.

While similar in his stature and attributes to Harry Maguire, at 22-year-of-age, Botman is yet to fulfil his potential moving into the prime years of his career. Moreover, being a centre-back keen on moving up the pitch in possession whilst also applying pressure on the opposition in high areas, the Dutchman boasts similar traits but retains better potential moving forward.

However, with the club having remained keen on securing the signing of Ajax centre-back Jurrien Timber, with Villarreal’s Pau Torres emerging as the backup option, a move to Old Trafford remains unlikely for Botman this summer.

    Chelsea

Expected to undergo an overhaul in defence ahead of the upcoming campaign, Chelsea remain keen on securing at least two centre-backs this summer. With Antonio Rudiger having moved to Real Madrid and Andreas Christensen inching closer on a move to Barcelona, Botman has, reportedly, emerged as a target for the Blues as Thomas Tuchel looks to improve the team’s prospects next season.

With Thiago Silva, Malang Sarr, and Trevoh Chalobah emerging as the notable names to slot in at centre-back next season, Chelsea will be keen on splashing the cash in a bid to bolster their defensive options. While Sevilla’s Jules Kounde remains a priority target, the club are reported to have joined to race for Botman this summer. Moreover, with Tuchel in need of two centre-halves in addition to addressing the team’s lack of an out-and-out striker, the 22-year-old emerges as a tempting prospect on a feasible fee this summer.

However, with the team in need of a pacy centre-back capable of seamlessly slotting into a back-three system, it remains to be seen if the Dutchman moves to the London club ahead of the upcoming season.

  • Why Newcastle United should do everything to sign Sven Botman

Why Newcastle United should do everything to sign Sven Botman

Newcastle are in advanced talks to sign Lille’s promising defender Sven Botman. The Magpies are said to have edged AC Milan in the race to land the Dutch defender with the player now open to the possibilities of playing in the Premier League.

Newcastle United have been tracking Botman since the start of the January transfer window with the player not convinced by the club’s project but five months on the line, the Dutch defender seems to have been swung by Eddie Howe’s vision for the club. Even Lille were not willing to sell the player in January as they wanted to push for a European finish but with time to reshuffle the squad and scout out suitable replacements this summer, his exit now seems inevitable.

    EARLY YEARS

    Embed from Getty Images

Signing a player with Botman’s talents would be a huge win for incoming new transfer chief, Dan Ashworth, who is naturally keen to hit the ground running. Having been brought up in the prestigious Ajax academy, Botman made a mark in Eredivisie when he left the club to go out on loan to SC Heerenveen – a mid-table club, with a strong history of providing a platform for players who are just beginning to start out their professional career. Botman shone here playing every possible minute of the truncated Eredivisie season, racking up 2,340 at the heart of Heerenveen’s defence.

    RISE TO FAME

    Embed from Getty Images

Lille’s infamous sporting director Luis Campos was so impressed by his loan spell that the club notched up €8m to sign him. And it proved to be a great decision with the defender guiding Lille to their first league title since 2011, piping giants Paris St. Germain by a single point. Their clubs across Europe took notice of this incredible Lille team with Botman now on the radar of every major European club.

Even in a transition year where manager Christophe Galtier left for the newly rich Nice and players like Mike Maignan, Boubakary Soumaré & Jonathan Ikoné all leaving the club for around €50m, Botman decided to stick around to play consistently in the first team. Even though the team’s performance went down Botman managed to keep performing well and now the likes of Newcastle, AC Milan and Arsenal are all said to be interested in his services.

BUT WHAT KIND OF A PLAYER IS SVEN BOTMAN

    Embed from Getty Images

Having done his footballing education in Amsterdam, Botman’s level of technical skills are second to none. His two-footedness naturally helps by a good distributor of the ball and also he has an excellent first touch.  He steps into midfield to create overloads, both as a passer and receiver. After receiving the ball the Dutch defender’s first instinct is to move the ball forward and seeks to break lines with crisp passes to access advanced teammates.

Standing at 6ft 3in, Sven easily is able to dominate a world of football where strikers are now seem to be going to be smaller in size with football managers preferring players who can move around swiftly rather than have a striker who is more likely to be a target man. Botman is decent in the air winning 3 aerial duels per game compared to his Dutch compatriot Virgil van Dijk’s 4 per game who is considered to be a god when it comes to dominating the ball in the air. He is always alert and in control of his surroundings, a quality which is seen to be very important in a central defender.

HOW WILL NEWCASTLE BENEFIT BY SIGNING BOTMAN

    Embed from Getty Images

Newcastle United will be signing a top talent who has a high ceiling. While the Magpies’ current centre pairing of Fabian Schar and Dan Burn ended the season in great form, simply put they are both players who can be upgraded. If Newcastle’s new owners have ambitions to play European football in the 2023-24 season then they must look for options which take them there. While Burn and Schar have years of experience in playing in the Premier League they are not used to playing the big European matches, something Botman has already done at Lille playing 13 matches in UEFA Europa and Champions League. It is not much but considering that is a professional footballer for only three seasons it is pretty impressive.

    CONS

    Embed from Getty Images

With Sven’s incredible physical gifts there are some limitations that arise due to them as well. He does not have the athleticism to contain quicker attackers. His mobility gets limited due to his size: he lacks the agility and acceleration to match quick changes of direction and speed, and as a result, struggles to control the ball-carrier and prevent a cross or pass.

He has some problems defending wide channels, meaning if his full-backs get caught in a counterattack while bombing up the pitch, the Dutch defender finds some difficulties covering up his teammates, but those concerns will be put to rest as Newcastle have confirmed their intentions to buy Matt Targett and that helps Botman as Matt is not the most adventurous of full-backs.

All in all, Newcastle are making the right decision in investing in Botman and in a few years’ time whatever transfer the Magpies pay to get him will end up looking like a bargain.

  • Newcastle United strongly looking into the possibility of signing Alvaro Morata

Newcastle United strongly looking into the possibility of signing Alvaro Morata

Numerous reports coming out have suggested that Newcastle United are strongly considering the possibility of signing Spanish striker Alvaro Morata.

Eddie Howe’s search for signing multiple forward options for next season continues, as transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Hugo Ekitike has agreed on a five-year deal with Newcastle with final details about to be discussed with Reims before the completion of the deal.

The Spanish forward has been a bit of a journeyman in his career with clubs like Real Madrid, Juventus, Chelsea, and Atletico Madrid all under his CV. Alvaro has had the experience of playing in the English top-flight when he donned the blue kit of Chelsea. After an amazing start to his life at Stamford Bridge, things went downhill from there and he jumped at the chance of playing for the red half of Madrid. For the previous two seasons, he has been plying his trade at Juventus where he has had decent campaigns. But why is it that Newcastle wants Morata?

    STYLE OF PLAY

A versatile and well-rounded forward, Morata is capable of playing as the main striker or linking up play between the lines and has also played out wide on the wing. His pace, energy, physicality, and work rate on the pitch have been the standout features, while his technique, opportunism, heading ability, and positional sense saw him pop up with some crucial goals.

Morata isn’t your typical 20 goals-a-season striker. If you can remember he is somewhat similar to Fernando Morientes. Standing at 6ft 2in, Morata is a brilliant linkup man which we saw several times at Juventus where he and Cristiano Ronaldo or he and Paulo Dybala formed really good partnerships. He has a good first touch and an excellent header of the ball with 10 of his 24 goals at Chelsea were from headers. He loves to drop between the lines, receive the ball, and create various passing angles and spaces for the midfielders and wingers, even scoring a few of them chances himself. This kind of movement is very hard to track, often dismantling the opponent’s defensive structure and it creates confusion in the minds of his markers on whether to follow him or not.

HOW WILL HE ADD VALUE TO THIS NEWCASTLE SQUAD

Even if he does not score a lot of goals, his other qualities have made him a player that managers want to have on the pitch. Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea and Luis Enrique at the Spanish national team at EURO 2020 played him in most of the games even if he missed crucial chances. They understood that even if there are some shortcomings in his game, he acts as a crucial component who helps function their teams.

Even though he managed to score 9 goals in the last Serie A campaign, it was still more than Callum Wilson (who arguably played fewer minutes) who was the Magpies’ top goal-scorer last season. His 1.3 chances created would only be second to French star Allan Saint-Maximin in the Newcastle squad. Among Newcastle’s current forwards Morata gives away the ball less number of times than all of them (1.6 dispossessed per match). He would definitely add a different dimension to this attack which has needed some repairing. His understanding of the game and experience of playing at big clubs and in big matches is something he and Kieran Trippier can share in this squad.

Paired with another striker like Callum Wilson or Hugo Ekitike who seems to be on his way to Newcastle and Morata can guarantee you around 15-20 goal contributions per season which will massively benefit Eddie Howe’s side who are looking to continue their good form from last season.

    CONS TO SIGN HIM

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride‘ has been the story of Alvaro Morata’s career.  His finishing has always let him down. He does not have the ‘killer’ mentality or the ‘mean streak’ associated with the very best of forwards the game has to offer.

He is often too eager to make runs in the channels means a lot of times he gets caught offside and all of the hard work put in by him and his team accounts for nothing.

It really depends on what kind of forward Eddie Howe wants to have on his team. His AFC Bournemouth teams were some of the most offensive-minded teams considering the kind of budget they were under. Goals were not an issue with those with defence being a problem. Like any player, Morata comes with his flaws. Sure there would be some instances that would make the Hall Of Fame for chances missed on Twitter and other social media platforms but considering what brings to the team any manager would be lucky to have a modern striker like Morata on their team. Team him up with a striker that knows how to put the ball in the back of the net and Alvaro’s signing would really be a good one.

Ben Nelson: Both the Manchester clubs and Newcastle United join the race to buy Leicester sensation

Leicester City’s 18-year-old centre back sensation, Ben Nelson, is already catching the eye of big English clubs. And his recent spoils in the academy of the East Midlands, just show how good is the Scottish defender.

In the 2020/21 season, the Foxes’ sensation received the award for “The Best Academy player of the season”.  And his talent was soon recognised and appreciated for at the club, as he signed the U23 contract in 2020. Since then, Nelson has become a regular for Leicester’s U23 side.

Ben Nelson, has shown his prowess this season in particular. Winning air duels, tackling, making interceptions, and scoring headed goals as well- the young boy has got it all in his locker. Although, he has not yet been given the luxury of playing for the first team, but the Northamptonian has trained in the squad sessions held under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers.

“When I look at the training sessions, I picked up little things through the older centre-backs and now have to try and mould that into my game. It just made me want to get another experience like that and carry on” he said on the official Leicester website.

Meanwhile, seeing his growth and the overall development, Nelson has received a call up for the U18 National side, back in November 2021. He has gotten 2 international caps under his belt, and will be hoping to feature again in the upcoming fixtures of the ‘Young Lions‘. They will be facing Austria, Wales and Croatia in a 4-nation tournament, which will be held in Zagreb.

It has been reported by an outlet, FootballInsider, that scouts from Newcastle, and both of the Manchester clubs will be present in attendance to watch the Leicester starlet. And as far as recruitment of the young talents is concerned, there is none better than those who work under Erik Ten Hag – like we saw his Ajax side. So, we shall hear it from one of the scout reports not long from now, as the Young Lions are all set to face the Austria U18s on the 7th of June.
