  • Leeds United face the heat as rival clubs make big moves in the transfer market

Leeds United face the heat as rival clubs make big moves in the transfer market

Currently standing at 16th, fighting multiple battles right from staying out of the relegation zone to managing the squad with a long list of injuries, Leeds United are facing a lot of problems and an immediate solution to all the problems is making strategic transfers in the January transfer market adding fresh legs to the squad but the club has been unable to do so while rival clubs have already started making big moves.

Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa standing 14th at the moment have made a big move signing the once Brazilian prodigy Philippe Coutinho on loan for the rest of the season. Gerrard and Coutinho have been teammates at Liverpool and their relationship is one of the main factors for the move to Aston Villa. Philippe Coutinho will certainly look to get back into his Liverpool form as he has struggled a lot recently in his stint at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

The next expected club which was going to go aggressive in the January transfer market and is doing so is Newcastle United. After the Saudi-led takeover, the club was destined to make big moves but standing at 19th is at a pretty dangerous position in terms of relegation. They have already signed English right-back Kieran Trippier which is a much-needed boost for the Magpies. They have also managed to sign former Leeds striker Chris Wood from Burnely by triggering his transfer clause for 20 million pounds.

Seeing his activity in the market, the Leeds fans are upset that their club isn’t acting on the situation. Will Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United manage to capitalize on this transfer window, do let us know!

  • Kieran Trippier to Newcastle – a much needed boost for the Magpies!

Kieran Trippier to Newcastle – a much needed boost for the Magpies!

The Saudi ownership promised the Geordies that reinforcements were on their way in January and it seems that they are off to a flying start in the window. Newcastle United have reportedly agreed on a deal with Atletico Madrid for the arrival of Kieran Trippier. The deal has been agreed for around 12 million euros and it has filled the Newcastle faithful with tons of excitement & expectations. With the player already undergoing his medical at St. James’ Park, let us dive into the intricacies of the move and how he fits into the club.

How Trippier rose to prominence in English Football:

The 31-year-old England International started his journey at the age of 9 when he joined the Manchester City academy. Although his family members were United fans, he chose City as some of his friends had also joined the same academy. After spending a decade at City, Trippier joined Championship side Barnsley on loan. He spent 2 seasons at Barnsley, making 41 appearances for the club. At the beginning of the 2011-12 season, Trippier moved to Burnley on a season-long loan before permanently signing for the Clarets.

Burnley proved to be the club where Trippier made a name for himself. He spent 4 seasons at the club, making 145 appearances for the club. He was named in the Championship PFA Team of the Year for 2 consecutive seasons in 2014 & 15 and was an indispensable player for the team that won promotion to the Premier League. His brilliance at Burnley caught the attention of Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs who managed to secure his signature in the 2015 summer transfer window.

Time at Spurs & “THAT” World Cup:

Kieran Trippier was initially used as a backup for Kyle Walker at right-back and only made occasional cup appearances for the team. After struggling to make an impact in his debut season, Trippier impressed in his second season as he slotted in for the injured Kyle Walker. His tenacity & crossing ability on the field were fairly evident and the Tottenham faithful were treated to some wonderful performances.

At the beginning of the 2017-18 season, Walker left the club for Manchester City and Trippier became the obvious Number 1 right-back for Spurs. He even signed a new five-year deal that reiterated his commitment to the club. Trippier’s earned laurels for his display at the 2018 World Cup with England. His set-piece deliveries, especially Free Kicks lead to comparisons with David Beckham and he even scored a memorable free-kick in a Semi-Final loss to Croatia. Trippier was the most creative player a the World Cup as he had created 24 goal-scoring opportunities for his team.

Despite starring at the World Cup, he was unable to cement a starting position for himself in the playing 11 as the club brought in Serge Aurier as a replacement for Walker. Trippier was constantly locked in a tussle with Aurier due to constant rotation at right-back. Although his performances were praiseworthy, Pochettino never really promoted him as the club’s first-choice fullback. As a result, Trippier moved to Atletico Madrid in the 2019 summer transfer window where he won the La Liga in his debut season.

Why the move to Newcastle makes sense:

    Embed from Getty Images

As the jubilant Newcastle fans celebrated the end of Mike Ashley’s tenure and welcomed the new ownership, they certainly were not expecting to find themselves in such a precarious position. Newcastle United are currently in a state of limbo with just 1 victory in 19 premier league games and are in desperate need of reinforcements. Although a complete overhaul of the squad cannot be executed in the winter transfer window, the signing of Kieran Trippier is certainly a step in the right direction.

At the age of 31, Trippier is an experienced figure whose leadership qualities will go a long way in turning Newcastle’s season around. He is a vocal player on the pitch who can organize the defense and give the squad a much-needed lift. Trippier’s dead-ball skills are also worth mentioning as a trait that can help the Magpies to good effect. With players such as Joelinton, Callum Wilson, and the club captain Jamal Lascelles to aim at, Trippier will be tasked with providing teasing deliveries from set plays for these players to attack. His accuracy from direct free-kicks will also test the opposition goalkeepers throughout the rest of the season. Furthermore,  Trippier’s ability to bomb forward on the right flank and whip in crosses into the penalty box will add an extra dynamic to Newcastle’s attacking play.

Eddie Howe is a vocal manager on the touchline who was appointed with the sole view of keeping the club in the division & building on from there. His dynamism and ability to implement his philosophy will certainly reciprocate with Trippier’s leadership qualities. His ability to put in a crunching tackle, get into the faces of his opponents, and stamp his authority on the field is something which Newcastle fans will surely fall in love with.

    Denouement:

Newcastle United’s new owners want to see their side compete with the big guns of English football. The club is a sleeping giant of English football who have been ruined by years of mismanagement. The Geordies who were used to seeing their club compete in European competitions & challenge for the Premier League title in the Late 90s have had to deal with the ebbs and flow of a relegation scrap for the past decade or so. Although Trippier won’t solve the problems instantly, his signing is certainly a step in the right direction. Newcastle needs to build on this and get in as many coveted reinforcements as possible to give Eddie Howe a serious chance of beating the drop this season. If this signing is a sign of things to come, then the Geordies are certainly in for a much better second half of the season for their beloved Newcastle United.

  • FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 20 – Forwards Watchlist

    FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 20 – Forwards Watchlist

Following a boisterous weekend of Christmas fixtures, we turn our attention to gameweek 20, as FPL managers prepare for a quick turnover amidst the palpable fear of unforeseen postponements over the coming weeks. While boxing day lived up to the expectations of many, GW19 provided a glimpse into the potential of numerous Fantasy Premier League assets moving forward.

The weekend proved to be fruitful for numerous players across the league table. Amongst the defenders, Kieran Tierney (£4.9mn), Emerson Royal (£4.9), and Aymeric Laporte (£5.5mn) emerged as the picks of the backline, with each of them registering double-digit hauls on boxing day. Further, the midfield, yet again, proved to be vital amidst postponements, with each of Lucas Moura (£6.4mn), Buyako Saka (£6.3mn), and Jorginho (£5.6mn), among others, delivering key returns in game-week 19.

While the defenders and midfielders stole the show on Christmas weekend, it was forwards who posed difficult questions moving forward. Amidst the lack of consistent players across the frontline, Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.9mn) and Alexandre Lacazette (£8.5mn) emerged as surprise assets, with each of them registering double-digits on boxing day. With the fixture list only set to grow increasingly unpredictable amidst the possibility of double gameweeks, the forward line is likely to emerge as a determining position moving ahead. Hence, in this article, we take a look at three forwards most likely to improve their returns whilst remaining a regular name on the team sheet over the busy period of fixtures.

    ARMANDO BROJA (£5.2M) [TOT, (H)]

Having delivered three returns in his last four league outings heading into game-week 20, Broja emerges as a promising asset over the coming weeks. The Southampton talisman has already registered four goals and two assists in the ongoing campaign and is expected to serve as a valuable asset, given the Saints’ favourable run of fixtures over the coming weeks.

The Albanian currently boasts the second-highest number of expected goals (0.34xG) per game and ranks the same for carries into the 18-yard-box (14) amongst his teammates this season. Additionally, the striker has also started each of the club’s last four league fixtures and is expected to remain a first-team regular over the coming weeks.

Facing a Tottenham side entering a promising vein of form, Tuesday’s fixture will likely prove to be a challenging outing for the Saints. However, having taken an indispensable three points against West Ham on boxing day, Southampton will be confident in securing a result, with Broja expected to play a vital part in proceedings over the coming weeks.

    NEIL MAUPAY (£6.4M) [CHE, (A)]

    Embed from Getty Images

Having netted thrice in his last four outings, the Frenchman emerges as an appealing option over the coming weeks. Maupay remains integral to Brighton’s attacking prowess, having already registered seven goals this season, and is likely to increase his tally given the club’s favourable run of fixtures in January.

The team’s highest goal-scorer in the ongoing campaign, Maupay boasts the second-highest number of expected goals (0.40xG) per game amongst his teammates. In addition, the Frenchman also registers an impressive number of goals/shots on target ratio (0.67) alongside standing fifth for shot-creating actions (28) at the club this season.

Facing a Chelsea side struggling to keep clean sheets, Brighton will be hopeful of securing a result at Stamford Bridge. Provided the Seagulls make it difficult for the Blues on Wednesday, Maupay could potentially play a part in delivering the desired outcome in game-week 20.

    CALLUM WILSON (£7.4M) [EVE, (A)]

    Embed from Getty Images

Amongst the few reliable assets within a struggling Newcastle side, Wilson is likely to increase his contribution given the club’s fixture list over the coming weeks. The striker remains the club’s highest goal-scorer (6) in the ongoing campaign and is expected to play a crucial role if Eddie Howe is to keep the Magpies in the first division at the end of the campaign.

Wilson unsurprisingly registers the highest number of expected goals (0.35xG) per game, amongst his teammates in the ongoing campaign. Further, he also registers the second-highest number of carries into the 18-yard-box (11), whilst registering a decent number of goals/shots on target (0.56) ratio at the club this season.

Facing a vulnerable Everton side mid-week, Newcastle will be sensing a decent result on the cards. The Magpies remain in desperate need of points, and Wilson is expected to emerge as a crucial asset if the team is to gain momentum heading into a pivotal period of fixtures over the coming weeks.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United: Match Preview | Premier League 2021/22

Newcastle United host Manchester United in the final fixture of a resounding gameweek 19 as both teams look to find a string of positive results given their respective ambitions over the remainder of the campaign. Heading on the back of a series of positive results, the visitors will be looking to improve their performances over the coming weeks. On the other hand, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle will be desperate to gain points as they prepare for a highly-anticipated January transfer window in their bid to avoid relegation at the end of the campaign.

Accounting to the worst defensive record – 41 goals conceded – in the ongoing league campaign, Newcastle have kept only one clean sheet in their last five games, having lost their previous three league ties heading into Monday’s game against the Red Devils. Moreover, with the pressure piling over the lack of positive results, the Magpies are likely to endure a difficult period, given their upcoming fixtures. With a refreshed Man. United team up-ahead, Newcastle will be hoping to cause an upset later this evening.

Savouring a six-game unbeaten run across all competitions, Ralf Rangnick’s Man. United will be keen on capitalizing on their favourable run of fixtures over the coming months. Having found themselves in the race for a top-four alongside several consistent teams, the Red Devils will be wary of any slip-ups as they prepare for a crucial set of ties over the coming weeks.

Having picked up his fifth yellow card of the campaign against Manchester City, Isaac Hayden remains suspended for the game against United on Monday. In addition, Federico Fernandez and Jamal Lewis remain sidelined with thigh injuries, Jonjo Shelvey is a doubt while Paul Dummett returned to training, but is yet to regain the fitness needed to be involved against the Red Devils.

The team, however, will be boosted by the potential returns of Javier Manquillo and Emile Krafth in the backline, with Sean Longstaff, too, expected to replace the suspended Hayden on Monday.

Except Paul Pogba, Rangnick has a fully fit squad at his disposal for the game against Newcastle. Having witnessed two postponements, the Red Devils are well rested and will be looking to display a relatively clinical performance on Monday.

Given the relentless run of fixtures, the manager will be looking to rotate the squad over the coming weeks. However, with the team in desperate need of maintaining their pursuit for top-four, Rangnick will be hoping to see well-rounded performances, starting against Newcastle on Monday.

    MATCH ANALYSIS

Amongst the teams struggling to find themselves in a favourable position throughout the campaign, both managers will be hoping to inspire a promising performance on Monday. Heading on the back of a series of positive results the visitors will be keen on maintaining their rhythm while the home will look to cause a rippling upset in their bid to avoid losing further points over a busy set of fixtures.

Having taken only four points from their last five league games, Newcastle will be keen on causing an upset on Monday. Given their defensive frailties, the home side are likely to employ a counter-attacking approach whilst remaining rigid in defence; stifling the visitors attacking channels, and will look to set up for, at least, a draw on Monday. However, having been promising in the attacking third, the Magpies will favour troubling a promising yet unpredictable United backline later his evening.

Meanwhile, the visitors are likely to capitalize on the home side’s poor form heading into the fixture. A refreshing change in management has seen the Red Devils significantly improve on their defensive numbers, whilst being far more promising in the attack. With the team in need of gaining confidence ahead of a crucial few months, Rangnick is likely to stick with an attacking approach; looking to pressurize the opposition through the flanks whilst also setting up to retain the bulk of possession through the ninety minutes. Given the possibility of facing a low-block, the Red Devils will be keen on employing a patient yet unpredictable approach on Monday.

    KEY PLAYERS

    NEWCASTLE UNITED – ALLAN SAINT-MAXIMIN

Having been amongst the team’s promising performers this season, the Frenchman emerges as a reliable threat up-front. Saint-Maximin has been heavily involved in Newcastle’s goals this season and his pace combined with his technical trickery will be vital to the Magpies efficiently executing their attacking tactics later this evening.

Provided Newcastle find themselves in promising areas across the attacking third, Saint-Maximin’s involvement will be vital to creating the requisite goal-scoring opportunities on Monday. With the team likely to remain compact without possession, the Frenchman’s threat on the counter will be critical to the home side potentially causing an upset against United.

    MANCHESTER UNITED – FRED

    Embed from Getty Images

Amongst United’s most improved players in recent weeks, Fred’s attributes will be vital to the team’s ingenuity on the offensive side on Monday. The Brazilian’s tenacity in regaining possession combined with his ability to contribute in attack will be vital to the team breaking dominating and retaining the ball for most of the ninety minutes.

Moreover, with the team in need of improving their midfield displays, Fred will be keen on executing his role diligently and avoiding potential hiccups over the coming weeks. With Newcastle expected to remain calculative in possession, Fred’s instincts will be vital to the visitors displaying a proactive approach later this evening.

Premier League clubs want to continue playing amid covid outbreak

Premier League has concluded that the majority of the clubs want football actions to continue throughout the festive period despite recent postponements due to COVID-19 outbreaks.

Few of the matches in gameweek 18 were been postponed indefinitely hereby having only Leeds United vs Arsenal as the only fixture that took place on Saturday. There were two COVID cases reported from the Arsenal’s camp with Pablo Mari and Albert Sambi Lokonga been mentioned to have been isolated from the main squad.

At the moment, most of the Premier League clubs have one or few cases of COVID-19 in their rank but that hasn’t stopped their decision against halting the League during this festive period in order to reduce the amount of accumulated postponed games.

According to Sky Sport, the Premier League FA are also in deliberation over the potential scrap of FA Cup third round and Fourth round replays considering possible fixture congestion should more games be postponed due to COVID-19.

  • Liverpool vs Newcastle United: Match Preview | Premier League 2021/22

Liverpool vs Newcastle United: Match Preview | Premier League 2021/22

The Omicron virus has taken over the country in the last month, and it is posing quite a challenge to several sporting fixtures. Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City, and a couple of other clubs have been affected by the issue. However, the Premier League is unlikely to be halted, given the amount of money involved in the competition and on each matchday. There will be a lot of eyes at Anfield on Thursday night when title-chasers Liverpool face relegation-threatened Newcastle United.

The Reds are relentless. They are showing all the signs of a Premier League title winner, but unfortunately, two other clubs are doing the same. However, the difference between Liverpool and them is that the Anfield outfit are doing so with little to no squad depth. Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Diogo Jota have played nearly every game this season, as have Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. They have been punching above their weight season after season and are capable of whitewashing most teams. But it must have alarmed Jurgen Klopp that it has taken some luck to secure victories in their last two games. Divock Origi scored a winner in added-time against Wolves before Mo Salah won and converted a penalty against Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa side. On both occasions, they could have easily lost the game. However, they have picked up all three points and that is all that matters. But the German boss would be expecting a convincing performance from his side when they face the Toon Army in mid-week. The Geordies have won 1 game out of the 16 they have played this season, conceding 34 and scoring only 17. It is such teams that Liverpool suffered against last season after everybody thought they would steamroll their way to the Premier League title. Eddie Howe and Newcastle are down, and it is a good time to face them. The Reds have the men to do the job, and they shall need to perform, especially since Man City will be playing a day earlier than them, while Chelsea will also be hosting Everton on Thursday night.

Newcastle United are in a rut, and things have not changed since the takeover. There is a lot of work to do, and one might wonder whether appointing Eddie Howe was the right decision. The Bournemouth boss has not been incredibly successful in guiding teams out of the relegation zone and his experience of churning the best out of his frontline has also not come to the fore yet. Their 4-0 defeat to Leicester City on Sunday made it clear that they are nowhere near saving their season and will need a miracle in the second half of the season to stay in the top flight. The Saudi-led consortium are ready to invest in January, and the Magpies might just do so, but they need some positive performances before that. A marquee is not going to sign for a sinking ship and the Geordies need to show at least some fight till the end of the year. A good start would be a positive result against 2nd placed Liverpool. The Reds have only lost 1 league game this season, courtesy of which the St. James’ Park outfit have their work cut out for them. However, it is not impossible to go toe-to-toe with them. Brentford, Brighton, West Ham have taken points from them, and all have shown fight and spirit against the Jurgen Klopp-led side. Newcastle have nothing to lose and need to approach the game similarly. They have the players to hurt the Merseyside club but would need to be at their best to garner a result. Watford and Burnley are not that far away from the Toon Army, and a victory on Thursday night, coupled with some favourable results in the other games, could see Eddie Howe guide the club out of the relegation zone before the end of the coming weekend.

    INJURY NEWS:

    Liverpool:

Jurgen Klopp has a few new injury concerns going into the mid-week fixture. Nathaniel PhillipsCurtis Jones, and Harvey Elliot are set to be out, but Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino are set to return to the matchday squad. If the Brazilian cannot make the starting XI, Diogo Jota is likely to return to the first team. Moreover, the German boss is likely to make some personnel changes as he might have the weekend game against Spurs on his mind. Ibrahima Konate could get a run-out, as could Naby Keita and Kostas Tsimikas. The trio have impressed when deputizing in their respective roles this season.

    Newcastle United:

    Embed from Getty Images

The one problem Eddie Howe does not have currently is a lengthy injury list. Paul Dummett is set to be the only absentee for the mid-week trip to Anfield. But the English boss shall have to nail his selection if he hopes to pick up a victory against the 2nd best side in England. Ciaran Clark could be welcomed back into the first team to shore up the five-man defence. Isaac Hayden could also be a viable option in midfield, but it remains to be seen whether Howe will displace the energy-filled Joseph Willock in the centre of the pitch for the 26-year-old.

    MATCH ANALYSIS:

Will the Liverpool midfielders be the matchwinners on the day?

    Embed from Getty Images

The Toon Army play with a low block inside their own half and give very little space to the opposition to the ball. Leicester succeeded against them on the weekend due to Youri Tielemans, Wilfried Ndidi, and James Maddison. The midfield trio dictated play continuously and found their found men time and again. The Reds shall have to do something similar because passing the ball to Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah might not work out as it has on most occasions this season. Fabinho shall need to thwart the counter-attacks while Thiago Alcantara or Naby Keita, depending on who plays, shall have to drive at the Geordies and draw them out of their positions to make some space for the frontline to operate in. The Reds have scored in every game this season, and they will be not be planning on stopping when they host Newcastle on Thursday night.

Newcastle United to garner a late winner?

    Embed from Getty Images

The Magpies have lacked an identity in recent years. Steve Bruce never really had a game-plan, and Eddie Howe does not have the players to carry out one. They are well-structured at times but capitulate after conceding. They are certain to be on the backfoot for the mid-week tie, and they shall need to soak the pressure. However, it is possible to stop Liverpool from scoring. Wolves and Aston Villa almost succeeded in doing so, and it might just take a team like the St. James’ Park outfit to park the bus and attack in the dying embers of the game. Allan Saint-Maximin always has the energy to run behind the opposition defence, while Callum Wilson only needs 1 chance to win the game. This is hardly a game-plan, but Newcastle are battling relegation, and this is their best chance of bagging a victory against arguably the fiercest attacking side in Europe.

    KEY PLAYERS:

    Trent Alexander-Arnold:

    Embed from Getty Images

The Englishman has been back to his very best this season and is whipping balls in for fun. In just 14 games, he has provided 7 assists and has also scored 1 goal. Liverpool shall need their chief creator to put on a show on Thursday as well. As mentioned before, the frontline are not going to enjoy a lot of time on the ball. In such scenarios, they need to be provided assists on a plate, and nobody does that better than Trent Alexander-Arnold in the top flight. It would also not be a surprise if the difference-maker on the day is set-pieces. In the last 18 months, Liverpool have scored the 2nd highest (20) goals from set-pieces, thanks to their humongous defenders and able attackers that get into the right areas at the right time. However, most of the credit goes to Alexander-Arnold, due to this ability to whip the ball in with pace and conviction. He is going to have a field day on Thursday, but Liverpool could have an off day if he is not up to the pace.

    Joseph Willock:

The only signing of the summer, Joseph Willock had 14 goal contributions in 32 games last season. His performances towards the end of the last campaign helped the club avoid the relegation zone comfortably. However, he has not been able to provide a single contribution in the 14 games he has played this season. But he cannot be blamed for that since the entire team has been dire in and out of possession. Willock shall have to show up on Thursday if Eddie Howe is to guide the club to their 2nd league victory of the season. The English midfielder needs to be patient without the ball and make good use of the possession when Newcastle win the ball. He needs to drive ahead and support the attack so that Wilson or Joelinton do not get crowded, but he cannot leave Jonjo Shelvey alone at any point. The 29-year-old is ageing and can barely stop any one of the three attackers of the Liverpool frontline. Willock will be the connection between the defence and the attack, and he needs to be wise and clever, not to mention determined throughout the entire 90 minutes. A victory could really boost the confidence within the dressing room.

    PREDICTED LINEUPS

Liverpool predicted XI  Allison; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil Van Dijk, Kostas Tsimikas; Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita; Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane.

Newcastle United predicted XI: Martin Dubravka; Javier Manquillo, Fabian Schär, Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis, Ciaran Clark; Jonjo Shelvey, Joseph Willock, Allan Saint-Maximin; Joelinton, Callum Wilson.

  • Arsenal sweating Khayon Edwards extension – Chelsea, Leeds, Newcastle in race

Arsenal sweating Khayon Edwards extension – Chelsea, Leeds, Newcastle in race

Arsenal have a history of getting things down to the final seconds before trying to rush into tying an expiring contract down. Times have changed, the personnel behind the scenes have changed, the Gunners are enduring a massive process to get back to being the best team in the country – but their way of doing things still hasn’t, at least on the contract side of things. Balogun had his one leg out of the club before Mikel Arteta had to get involved to get him to sign that thing, Kido Taylor-Hart was handed his new deal after his previous one expired, and Eddie Nketiah looks like done at the Emirates – but there is one more attacking prospect in Khayon Edwards who is facing cross-roads whether to extend his stay at Hale End or look for opportunities beyond.

Khayon Edwards is one of the top attacking prospects in the Gunners’ academy having scored a new of goals this season. But he is yet to agree on a new contract at Arsenal and as per Daily Mail, the North Londoners have offered several deals though that has failed to impress him enough to put pen to paper.

Where there lies uncertainty, there comes opportunity; looking at his standings at Arsenal, a number of German clubs alongside Chelsea, Leeds, Brighton, Newcastle, and Southampton have expressed their interest in taking Khayon Edwards under their wings.

Arsenal will be anxious over tying Khayon Edwards to a long-term deal, while others wait on the sidelines to watch how this one pans out for the Gunners. Per Mertesacker has been highly investing at Hale End since he took over, making massive progress into getting players ready to knock on the doors of above their age limits and in the first-team – the last thing they’d want is to lose a highly rated prospect to one of their direct rivals.

  • Leicester City vs Newcastle United: Match Preview | Premier League 2021/22

Leicester City vs Newcastle United: Match Preview | Premier League 2021/22

Leicester City will play host to Newcastle United at the King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon, in their next Premier League outing. Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes dropped to the bottom half of the standings after winning only one out of their last six league games, and will go head-to-head against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side who climbed out of the bottom spot only recently.

After finishing the season at the fifth position for two seasons in a row and winning the FA Cup last season, this season was supposed to be the next step forward for the Foxes. But in reality, it has been anything but – as Leicester looks like a shadow of the team that they were over the past couple of seasons. The Foxes have struggled with consistency and their issues at the back, as they sit in 12th position on the standings with a total of 19 points from their 15 games so far.

Their Europa League campaign ended in mid-week as they crashed out into the newly-created Conference League, a tournament that Rodgers does not rate very highly judging from his post-match comments. Despite still making an impact in the final third, it is their defensive issues that has held them back: Leicester have conceded at least twice in their last four top-flight games.

The aforementioned statistic will encourage their visitors, who moved out of the bottom spot last weekend after a win over Burnley. A Callum Wilson goal helped the Magpies earn their first win of the season, ending a winless streak of 14 league games: and also helped them to within three points of safety with 10 points to their name. It was also the first win under the management of Eddie Howe, and the Magpies will hope to build on from the positive result last weekend.

The hosts will miss a list of players due to coronavirus and illness, forcing Brendan Rodgers to start a number of players who started in mid-week against Napoli. Jamie Vardy who played the entirety of the Napoli loss could drop out in favour of Patson Daka, while Boubakary Soumaré could come back into the team to strengthen the midfield. Luke Thomas will also hope to be back in the team to replace Ryan Bertrand at left-back after missing the mid-week outing.

As for the visitors, it would not be a surprise to see Eddie Howe stick to the combination that helped get their first league win of the season last weekend. However, the Magpies could go for a more cautious and conservative approach against the Foxes, as a more defensive-minded player in either of Matt Ritchie or Jacob Murphy could come in to replace Miguel Almiron on the flank.

Newcastle have had the worst away record in the league this season, having yet to win on the road: and they will hope to break that trend at the King Power on Sunday afternoon. However, it must be noted that Leicester have been average at home this season as well, having registered only 10 points from their seven games played at home. Both the teams are stronger in attack than at the back, which means that a high-scoring encounter could be on the cards. While one can expect the Magpies to lead at one point of the game considering they are looking like they have turned a corner, Leicester should have enough firepower in their ranks to see them over the line. The Foxes will hope to get some control over the contest by winning the second balls in midfield, and shut down any chances of any sustainable spells of possession for the visitors. The game is likely to be decided by whichever team allows the least amount of chances conceded.

    KEY PLAYERS

    Youri Tielemans

In the likely absence of Jamie Vardy in the starting eleven, the hosts’ key player for this weekend is Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans. The midfielder has been key to the Foxes’ fortunes since joining the East Midlands club in 2019, and is often his team’s chief creative outlet from the middle of the pitch while also getting a fair share of goals for himself: Tielemans has already scored three goals and has had an assist this season. It is no coincidence that the Foxes’ bad patch this season coincided with the time that Tielemans found himself sidelined from action with an ankle injury: and his return to action against Napoli was treated with major enthusiasm from the Leicester faithful. Tielemans will hope to dictate proceedings this weekend, in order to provide the Foxes with enough control of the game to earn them a win to get their season back on track.

    Callum Wilson

The visitors’ main man is none other than their top marksman Callum Wilson. The English forward has been one of the few bright spots about a dull season for the Magpies so far, having scored six goals in the league already in 11 games. It was Wilson’s late matchwinner against Burnley last weekend that sealed three points for Newcastle for the first time this season, as the former Bournemouth man’s reunion with his former boss Eddie Howe has got off to a decent start: Wilson has scored in each of the Magpies’ last two Premier League goals. A goal scorer who is adept at getting behind defenses and is good in the air as well, Wilson is the Magpies’ best attacking outlet: and will hope to be fed with some good service by Allan Saint-Maximin. If the Magpies are to get anything out of the fixture, Wilson has to step up to the task once again.

    PREDICTED LINEUPS

Leicester City predicted XI (4-3-3): Schmeichel; Castagne, Evans, Soyüncü, Thomas; Ndidi, Tielemans, Soumaré; Maddison, Daka, Barnes.

Newcastle United predicted XI (4-4-2): Dubravka; Manquillo, Schär, Lascelles, Lewis; Murphy, Shelvey, Willock, Saint-Maximin; Joelinton, Wilson.

Newcastle United vs Norwich City: Preview | Premier League 2021/22

The busiest part of the season is fast approaching, and this is the time that we really see the clubs put their full squad depth to use. With the fixtures coming thick and fast, it brings even more excitement to the festive period. Gameweek 14 commences in the midweek, with a bottom-of-the-table battle between 20th placed Newcastle United and 19th placed Norwich City.

Newcastle United were predicted to be the relegation favorites at the start of the season as a result of the lack of investment done by the previous owner. The new owners have made a few changes, notably the firing of Steve Bruce and the appointment of the young Englishman Eddie Howe as the head coach. However, the Saudi Arabian-led consortium will have to wait till January to begin investing in the squad, with their takeover finishing just after the summer transfer window. January cannot arrive soon enough for the Magpies who sit bottom of the table and are the only team in the entire league to not have won a single game after 13 gameweeks. However, the arrival of Eddie Howe has seen some improvement in the playing style of the club, with Newcastle showing grit and determination in the 3-3 draw against Brentford, but were outplayed by a superior opposition in Arsenal last time out, which was Howe’s first actual game in charge of the club. The midweek fixture against Norwich City, who have themselves been improving, provides a chance for Newcastle to register their first win of the Premier League season, and haul themselves out of the bottom place, and within just three points of safety.

Norwich City have had a busy few weeks recently. What started with a win at Brentford at the start of the month to break their miserable winless run, was followed by the sacking of manager Daniel Farke, and the appointment of Dean Smith. The Englishman then guided the Canaries to another win against Southampton, and then a draw against Wolves last time out, as the sinking ship seems to be steadied for now. Dean Smith is unbeaten in his two games with the club and will hope to continue the form against Newcastle, in what is a winnable game for both teams.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe will be without captain Jamal Lascelles and first-choice left-back Matt Ritchie, with the defensive duo serving a one-game suspension. In what will be a welcome news to the new manager, there are no players missing out with injuries, meaning that the Englishman has a fully fit squad to choose from ahead of the clash on Tuesday.

Norwich City have not been so lucky, losing midfielder Mathias Normann to injury on the weekend against Wolves. The manager has ruled him out for the trip to Newcastle, and it remains to see how long the Norwegian is expected to be sidelined. Turkish international Ozan Kabak has returned to full training, but it is unlikely he will be in contention to start. Christoph Zimmermann is expected to miss out with an ankle injury, along with Sam Byram who is still regaining full fitness.

AN OPEN GAME ON THE CARDS?

A relegation battle is always a fantastic watch, with three or more teams going at it till the end of the season, and the slightest margin of error could redefine a team’s entire season. This season, the relegation battle seems to close to call, with Newcastle, Norwich, Burnley, Leeds United, and Watford all set to scrap it out over the rest of the season.

The battle on our hands right now, however, is between Newcastle United and Norwich City. The Magpies are desperate for a win, with them being the only team in the top four divisions in English football yet to win a game. Eddie Howe rightly stated that the squad is lacking confidence, and good results breed confidence. If Newcastle could get three points on board against Norwich, it will give them a much-needed boost, and could help them in the long term in surviving for another season in the Premier League.

Norwich City’s win against Brentford marked the end of a 20-game winless run in the Premier League, in which they lost 18 and drew 2. The appointment of Dean Smith has marked a change in form and style of Norwich, and they have got the attacking guns firing again. However, there is still a lot of work to do for former Aston Villa manager, and in order to get the Canaries to safety, they need to be consistent.

With two teams newly rediscovering what they are capable of, it could be a very open match. It is a must-win game for both teams, and both teams will aim to get three points against an equal opposition. It all could lead to a free-flowing and open game, with both sides boasting some very talented attacking options. The likes of Pukki, Wilson, Rashica, Saint-Maximin, and others will be hoping to get some goals to boost their chances of survival this season. Both teams have weak defenses, which adds more fuel to the fire. Their attacking play has been much better than their defending, with the Magpies having the worst defense in the league, having conceded 29 goals, while the Canaries have the second-worst defense, conceding 27 goals. It all builds up towards what is set to be a wonderful watch for any neutral.

    KEY PLAYERS

    Allan Saint-Maximin

    Embed from Getty Images

The shining light in a gloomy Newcastle squad, he is without a doubt, the best player in the Newcastle squad. His trickery and the devilish pace has been in full flow this season, and his quick feet have left defenders in bewilderment. He is fast and can dance his way past defenders, and is one of the best 1-on-1 players in the league. While he has not had a lot of support from his teammates on the pitch, he has single-handedly created opportunities and has put them away from himself. He was the star man on the pitch against Brentford in the 3-3 draw, scoring the last goal and giving the opposition a lot of scary moments with his runs.

Allan Saint-Maximin is very difficult to contain, and the Norwich City defense will have spent a lot of time trying to focus on how best to stop him. He has played the most minutes in the team, highlighting how important he is to the team, and he will be needed once again on Tuesday.

    Teemu Pukki

    Embed from Getty Images

The Finnish striker is one of the most clinical finishers in the league and has proved that on many occasions now. In a team that has struggled to create chances and opportunities for him, Pukki has not quite shown his full potential but has taken whatever opportunities he can and as a result has been the Canaries’ first-choice striker for over 3 seasons now. He has scored in each of the two victories Norwich have had this season, and is their leading goal-scorer with 4 goals.

Teemu Pukki had an off evening in front of goal against Wolves, but his role in the build-up play was very crucial for the Canaries. His movements and runs were vital in creating chances, but he could not replicate his performance from Southampton, as Norwich played out a goalless draw at Carrow Road. He will be excited at the prospect of facing a weak defense and will hope to improve his goal tally on Tuesday night.

    PREDICTED LINEUPS:

Newcastle United predicted lineup: Martin Dubravka; Emil Krafth, Fabian Schar, Ciaran Clark, Jamal Lewis; Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Joe Willock; Allan Saint-Maximin; Callum Wilson, Joelinton.

Norwich City predicted XI: Tim Krul; Max Aarons, Grant Hanley, Ben Gibson, Brandon Williams; Kenny McLean, Lukas Rupp, Billy Gilmour; Josh Sargent, Teemu Pukki, Milot Rashica.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United: Match Preview | Premier League 2021/22

Arsenal host Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium this weekend, with the tie kicking off the match week’s fixtures on Saturday. After a gruelling result in their previous outing, both teams will be aiming to secure a positive result as they prepare for an unforgiving fixture schedule over the next few weeks.

The Gunners’ resounding 10-game unbeaten streak came to a halt last weekend as Mikel Arteta’s squad were dealt a pounding 0-4 defeat at the hands of Liverpool. Their loss to the Reds meant that the North-London outfit failed to launch themselves into the top-four, however, they remain in fifth-place – three points behind West Ham – heading into the weekend. Having displayed resurgent performances following their dismal start to the campaign, Arsenal will be keen on returning to winnings ways as they host an intriguing Newcastle United on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe’s reign at Newcastle United began with a few refreshing moments as the Magpies secured only their sixth point of the season – drawing to Brentford – last weekend. Yet to secure their first victory of the campaign, a boisterous start saw Newcastle score and concede two goals against the Bees, however, the hosts eventually failed to secure three points, furthering their fears of relegation by the end of the campaign. Currently bottom of the table, the Magpies will be keen on extracting a positive result when they travel to the Emirates on Saturday.

Kieran Tierney is expected to replace Nuno Tavares at left-back after the latter’s nervy performance against Liverpool last weekend. Sead Kolasinac continues recuperating from an ankle injury while Arteta provided positive news vis-à-vis Granit Xhaka, expecting the midfielder to return to action before the turn of the year.

Despite the underwhelming result at Anfield, Arteta is likely to make seismic changes to his starting line-up on Saturday. Albert Sambi-Lokonga is, once again, expected to be included in the starting XI with both, Emile Smith-Rowe and Bukayo Saka providing the width against Newcastle this weekend.

After a positive Covid-19 result prevented Eddie Howe from managing from the dugout for his first game in charge of Newcastle, the 43-year-old will be hoping to grace the touchline on Saturday. Besides, Emile Krafth is likely to be slotted in at centre-back after Fabian Schar suffered a hamstring injury against Brentford. Paul Dummett is the only other player certain to miss out on the trip to North London.

Howe is likely to stick with a back three against Arsenal, with Martin Dubravka in contention to start between sticks on Saturday. Having witnessed a decline in his goal-scoring ability, Joe Willock is expected to start against his former side, with both Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin providing the striking force upfront.

    Match Analysis

Heading into the fixture on the back of unexpected results, both managers will be aiming to display a comprehensive performance on Saturday. While the visitors will be keen on extracting, at least, a draw against Arsenal, the Gunners are likely to cruise towards a victory against the Magpies.

The hosts’ in-form attackers combined with their solid midfield structure are likely to cause problems for the visitors, who continue struggling to keep clean sheets whilst failing to dominate games throughout the ninety minutes. Although Newcastle’s attacking force will expectedly cause problems for the home side, Arsenal remains favourites for the win given their recent progress under Arteta’s management.

The hosts’ technical style of play could cause insurmountable problems for the Magpies, however, their defensive structure could prove to be vulnerable provided they fail to contain Newcastle’s creative forces upfront.

    Key Players

    Kieran Tierney – Arsenal

    Embed from Getty Images

Following a disappointing performance by Tavares against Liverpool last weekend, Tierney will be a welcome replacement at left-back. The Scotsman’s infectious energy combined with this attacking prowess will be vital to Arteta’s approach, while his defensive attributes will strengthen Arsenal’s defensive structure on Saturday.

Moreover, given the team’s overreliance on Aaron Ramsdale’s heroics in recent outings, Tierney provides the coveted balance between attack and defence whilst adopting a disciplined role at left-back. Tierney’s performance will be pivotal if the hosts are to contain Saint-Maximin’s trickery while hoping to keep a clean sheet this weekend.

    Allan Saint-Maximin – Newcastle United

    Embed from Getty Images

The team’s most captivating attacker, Saint-Maximin’s overall performance will be vital if the visitors are to secure a positive result against Arsenal. Having registered significant goal contributions throughout the campaign, the Frenchman’s skill set combined with his ability to drag defenders out of position will be pivotal to Howe’s game-plan on Saturday.

Following a resonating performance against Brentford, Saint-Maximin will be keen on carrying over his excellent run of form against Arsenal. Provided the visitors spoil the party, Saint-Maximin is likely to be involved in securing a comprehensive result at the Emirates.

    PREDICTED LINEUPS
