  • FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 7 – Forwards Watchlist

    FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 7 – Forwards Watchlist

After another intriguing set of mid-week European fixtures, we turn our attention to the weekend as Premier League football returns for gameweek seven before the second international break. Gameweek six posed several obstacles for many FPL managers following surprise absentees and unexpected results across the numerous fixtures.

In the forward position, West Ham’s Michail Antonio (£8.0mn), yet again, proved his worth against Leeds United after the striker netted his fifth league goal of the season last weekend. Although both, Romelu Lukaku (£11.7mn) and Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7mn) failed to provide attacking returns, Wolves’ Raul Jimenez (£7.5mn) scored his first goal of the season while Jamie Vardy (£10.4mn) continued his excellent form, registering his second double-digit haul of the season against Burnley in game-week six.

Now, with a swing in fixtures already underway and both, differentials and premium options heading into a favourable set of ties following the international break, the upcoming game week offers a tempting opportunity to shuffle the forward line before potentially considering a wildcard in the coming weeks. In an attempt to shortlist the most valuable forwards for the coming weekend, in this article, we take a look at three forwards capable of providing the desired returns and examine their long-term potential ahead of a demanding period of fixtures following the international break.

    Raul Jimenez (£7.5M) [NEW, (H)]

Having netted his first goal of the campaign against Southampton last weekend, FPL managers are banking on the Mexican to perform to his potential heading into a pivotal period of fixtures within the Premier League. Although yet to significantly contribute through goals and assists, Jimenez’s underlying attacking numbers reflect his desire to create and provide himself with goal-scoring opportunities in the final third of the pitch.

Despite registering only one attacking return, hitherto, Jimenez accounts for 15 shots from within the box and has created four big chances with a refreshing number of expected goals (2.01xG) this season. In addition, he has also created 16 chances with a decent number of expected assists (1.82xA).

In Newcastle, Jimenez faces a defensively fallible side at the weekend. The Magpies account for the second-highest number of goals conceded (14) while also conceding the second-highest number of shots on target (37) in the league this season. Provided Wolves find their rhythm and succeed in capitalizing on their opportunities in the final third, Jimenez could increase his goal tally before heading into a pivotal set of fixtures following the international break.

    Michail Antonio (£8.0M) [BRE, (H)]

Undeniably, the standout player from the ongoing campaign, Antonio’s performances have earned him a glorious reputation amongst FPL managers. The West Ham talisman currently stands as the highest-scoring forward in the league, while also remaining the most consistent in his department. In addition to garnering an invincible FPL reputation, Antonio has fulfilled expectations, having been the only player alongside Mohamed Salah (£12.6mn) and Said Benrahma (£6.6mn) to register three double-digit hauls this season, hitherto.

Facing a formidable Brentford defence, Antonio is, once again, expected to deliver the goods for Moyes’ side at the London Stadium on Saturday. The Jamaican international has been pivotal to West Ham’s creativity in the final third, having registered four assists alongside his five goals this season. Antonio boasts an envious 21 shots from within the box, 11 shots on target, and an incredible number of expected goals (4.75xG) in the ongoing campaign. Additionally, West Ham have also been amongst the most expansive sides across the league, having scored the second-highest number of goals (13) and registered the third-highest number of shots on target (34) this season.

Although facing a Brentford defence that has conceded the fourth-lowest number of big chances (9) and fifth-lowest number of shots from within the box (39) this season, Antonio is expected to be the difference at the weekend. Provided they create and successfully take their goal-scoring opportunities against Brentford at the London Stadium, Antonio is likely to produce an attacking return and a potential double-digit haul at the weekend.

    Romelu Lukaku (£11.7M) [SOU, (H)]

    Embed from Getty Images

Although yet to produce an attacking return in consecutive game weeks since his initial performances on arriving at Chelsea, Lukaku is likely to emerge as a high-priority premium asset heading into a turn in fixtures starting at the weekend. The Belgian international has been impressive on the pitch, having already netted three goals in five league appearances this season. In addition, Lukaku is also the team’s most probable attacking starter and is likely to significantly increase his attacking contributions in the coming weeks.

Lukaku has been Chelsea’s most lethal forward and already boasts exceptional underlying attacking numbers. The Belgian striker has already recorded 14 shots from the box and six shots on target with a decent number of expected goals (2.17xG) this season. Additionally, he has also created nine chances including two big chances at a noticeable number of expected assists (1.65xA) in the current campaign.

Hosting a defensively vulnerable Southampton at the weekend, Lukaku will be keen on increasing his attacking contributions before heading into the international break. Although having kept two remarkable clean sheets this season, the Saints aren’t the most defensively formidable sides across the table this season. Southampton have conceded 48 shots from within the box and 12 big chances, while Chelsea have already taken 51 shots from the box, created 12 big chances, and scored the same number of goals this season.

Given their need to bounce back following consecutive losses across two competitions, Chelsea will be keen on taking three points at the weekend. Lukaku will be hoping to find the back of the net before the Belgian returns for a favourable run of fixtures following the international break.

  • FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 7 – Captaincy Options

    FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 7 – Captaincy Options

Deciding on your captain for each game week is an important aspect of playing Fantasy Premier League. A significant increase in points can drastically affect your gameweek and propel you up or down the FPL rankings. As a result, selecting the best captain each week is a judgment that should be carefully considered.

In Fantasy Premier League, Gameweek 7 is going to be harsh. There seems to be a lot of injuries, a lot of player uncertainty, and a lot of popular FPL assets canceling each other out as Liverpool and Manchester City meet in a single match. This is likely to be one of the most difficult gameweeks ever, with a significant level of unpredictability. There is plenty to gain and much to lose.

Keeping that in mind, let us have a look at the best captaincy options for your FPL teams this Gameweek:

    ROMELU LUKAKU (£11.7M) [SOU, (H)]

    Embed from Getty Images

Over his first five Premier League matches, the Belgian has so far faced Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, and Aston Villa. Despite having such a challenging sequence, Lukaku was still capable enough to score three goals. Lukaku’s and Chelsea’s schedule is now a lot easier, commencing with a match against Southampton at home on matchday 7. The Saints have been unable to win a league game this season, and while they have earned four draws, they have still conceded seven goals.

Lukaku has produced an xG of 2.17, 14 shots in the box, and 6 shots on target.  In addition, the Belgian boasts a 1.65 xA, 9 Chances, and 2 Big Chances.

In Gameweek 7, Chelsea host Southampton at Stamford Bridge, in what appears to be a very appealing matchup for the Blues. The Saints have given up an XGC of 8.3, 12 big chances, and allowed 48 shots in the box.  Chelsea have scored 12 goals, notwithstanding a difficult start to the season. They have also produced an xG of 9.0, 51 shots in the box, and 12 big chances. They are now on a really good run of games, commencing with Ralph Hassenhutl’s side.

This season, Lukaku will be Chelsea’s beacon of light. His statistics over the last few seasons suggest that he is a top choice who can score and assist.

    SON HEUNG-MIN (£10M) [AVL, (H)]

    Embed from Getty Images

Son has opened the season well for Spurs, netting three goals in five appearances. Given that they have only registered four goals, this is quite astounding and demonstrates that he is now hoarding the points at Spurs. He has been the main creator along with being the top scorer for the Spurs. Son has produced an xG of 1.80, an xA of 0.62, 7 shots in the box, 2 big chances and has also created 7 chances for his teammates.

In Gameweek 7, Spurs play Aston Villa at the London Stadium. Villa have been pretty good in terms of defending this season, allowing an xGC of just 7.2, conceding just 54 shots in the box and 19 shots on target.

So far, the North London club has been one of the league’s weakest attacking teams. They have scored just four goals, which is the third-least total in the league, and have an xG of just 5.9. However, the South Korean has proven to be a deadly finisher throughout his tenure and doesn’t require many opportunities to score. He always outscores his xG, and he appears to be Spurs’ most likely point producer at the moment.

Heung-Min Son can also score FPL points from corners and free kicks, so he has a variety of opportunities. He can contribute to assists as well as score because he has 24 assists in the last two seasons.

    MICHAIL ANTONIO (£7.9M) [BRE, (H)]

    Embed from Getty Images

Michail Antonio has been a godsend for FPL managers this season, and he’s a brilliant captain’s pick again this week. Antonio is now the game’s leading scorer in the forward position. At the time of this post, he has an xG of 4.75 (2nd) in the PL and the third-highest xA of any forward in the league in 2021/22. He has also produced 21 shots in the box and 11 shots on target.

While Brentford, West Ham’s opponents this week, have had a solid defensive background in the past, their 3-3 tie with Liverpool in GW6 demonstrated that they are more than ready to concede goals when against the correct offence, which Antonio and his teammates should be. Thus far, the freshly promoted team has been very solid, particularly at the back. The Bees have one of the best defenses this season. They have allowed an xGC of just 6.5, 9 big chances, and have conceded just 39 shots in the box. Their only game where they were not strong at the back was last week against Liverpool.

With such a variety of attacking talent, the Hammers have become one of the finest offensive teams at the moment. West Ham have scored the second-highest goals in the league this season (13), along with an xG of 11.7, 60 shots in the box, and 34 shots on target.

Antonio has proved that he is virtually unaffected by any of the teams he faces and can score against any opponent. His overall stats are top-notch, and he ranks among some of the league’s finest. Antonio has not only established himself as one of the finest FPL forwards for Gameweek 7, but he is also skilled at scoring 20 league goals every season if he can remain fit. He can also assist, making him ideal for FPL.

  • FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 7 – Midfielders Watchlist

    FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 7 – Midfielders Watchlist

FPL returns this weekend with the seventh instalment of its Gameweeks. A lot of FPL managers will be looking to bring in some quality midfielders given the fact that a few of the most popular ones like Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish have a tough matchup as they face each other this weekend. Keeping that in mind, let us have a look at some of the best midfield FPL options for Gameweek 7:

    SAID BENRAHMA (£6.5M) [BRE, (H)]

    Embed from Getty Images

This season, Said Benrahma has become a fantastic alternative. Along with the three goals and two assists in his first six games this season, the Algerian has produced an xG of 1.68, an xA of 1.83, 5 shots in the box, 6 shots on target, while creating 3 big chances and 10 chances.

In Gameweek 7, West Ham host Brentford in London. Thus far, the freshly promoted team has been very solid, particularly at the back. The Bees have one of the best defenses this season. They have allowed an xGC of just 6.5, 9 big chances and have conceded just 39 shots in the box. Their only game where they were not strong at the back was last week against Liverpool.

However, the Hammers have been excellent in the attack as well, and considering their attacking prowess, one should expect this game to have some goals involved too. They have produced an xG of 11.7, 13 goals, 34 shots on target and 60 shots in the box. Benrahma has proven to be excellent value for money, with a starting price of just £6.0 million. His value has increased by £0.5 million as a result of his outstanding performances, and he has paired up extremely well with Michail Antonio (£7.9 million).

Brentford’s defense could be overwhelmed by West Ham’s onslaught, and the Algerian is their best attacking midfielder. For both xG and xA, he is just behind Antonio.

    SON HEUNG-MIN (£10M) [AVL, (H)]

Son has opened the season well for Spurs, netting three goals in five appearances. Given that they have only registered four goals, this is quite astounding and demonstrates that he is now hoarding the points at Spurs. RAPHINHA (£6.5M) [WAT, (H)]

    Embed from Getty Images

Raphinha is starting to find his rhythm this season, having scored three goals in his first six appearances. That’s amazing value at £6.5 million. The fact that he should have a lot more offensive output is both promising and disheartening for owners. The Brazilian has produced an xG 1.83, xA of 1.58, 7 shots on target, 5 shots in the box, 13 chances and 2 big chances. This season, he’ll almost certainly get some large hauls.

Leeds United host Watford in one of the better matchups of the week. Watford have allowed an xGC of 10.1, 47 shots in the box, 14 big chances and have also conceded 9 goals. This season, Marco Bielsa’s team hasn’t been at full steam and has suffered. Despite having a 7.4 xG, they have only tallied 5 goals. What is evident, though, is that they haven’t tweaked their approach to the game and are in the midst of their most opportune encounters so far. Even if they aren’t at their best, they will be able to score a few goals here.

  • West Ham United Women vs Leicester City Women: Match Report | WSL 2021/22

West Ham United Women vs Leicester City Women: Match Report | WSL 2021/22

A match report which covers West Ham United’s 4-0 win over Leicester City in the WSL on Sunday.

    STARTING LINE-UP

    Embed from Getty Images

West Ham United: Arnold, Flaherty, Cissoko, Parker, Longhurst, Yallop, Stringer, Brynjarsdóttir, Hasegawa, Leon, Walker.

Leicester City: Levell, McManus, Plumpture, Tierney, Bailey-Gayle, Pike, Cain, Barker, O’Brien, Sigsworth, Flint.

Both teams lineup strongly with West Ham in a 3-5-2 today, it seems that they are looking to attack and not hold back. With Leicester playing in a typical 4-3-3, it’ll be interesting to see who’s the more attacking side today. And this may be the match to watch after the 6-1 thrashing of Man United by Chelsea, because there might be another one here.

Hawa Cissoko makes her first appearance for the Hammers since her red card against Brighton. Her return into the side allows Kate Longhurst to feature in midfield again. Gilly Flaherty will surely be happy having 3 defenders in defence once again and it could prove to be vital. Tameka Yallop also makes her first start for West Ham after signing from Brisbane Roar this summer.

    MATCH REPORT

    Embed from Getty Images

Tameka Yallop (1-0 to West Ham United) with a debut goal gives hosts the lead. Due to a long ball from Kate Longhurst which she runs on to, Tameka Yallop breaks through Leicester’s offside trap and scores a poachers’ goal which puts the Irons 1-0 up. Some poor tracking for Leicester there, but even so Tameka was just too fast. 1-0.

Claudia Walker’s doubled the lead for Hammers off the mark too. Another long ball from the Hammers which was flicked on by Gilly Flaherty allowed Claudia to guide the ball into the net. It really is poor defending for Leicester City, which has cost them. And West Ham are now 2-0 up on the brink of halftime.

Ashleigh Plumptre (OG) nets in the wrong net. Oh, dear. Plumptre doesn’t deal with a dangerous West Ham cross in from the left and instead sends it into the back of her own net. Things get even better for the Hammers shortly before the interval when Leon’s cross is sliced into her own net by Ashleigh Plumptre to make it 3-0 to the Hammers.

At halftime, Hammers lead by three goals to nil. A rare, three substitutions for Leicester, as Hannah Cain, Abbie McManus, and Paige Bailey-Gayle making way for Mackenzie Smith, Jemma Purfield, and Sophie Howard to come off the bench. but that doesn’t help alot as Tameka Yallop wraps up the game. An extremely typical goal for this match, West Ham whip the ball in from just outside the box, and an unmarked player converts the ball into the back of the net. Some more examples of how not to defend by Leicester, as their backline stands there watching the ball go in. And it’s now 4-0 to West Ham.

A well-deserved 3 points for West Ham and an abysmal performance from Leicester, despite the stats seeming quite even. Also, a quick note to celebrate Brooke Cairns’ professional debut, after the 18-year-old was subbed on for Yui Hasegawa in the dying embers of the game. So with that done, it finishes 4-0 to West Ham United.

  • West Ham United Women vs Leicester City Women: Match Preview | WSL 2021/22

West Ham United Women vs Leicester City Women: Match Preview | WSL 2021/22

West Ham and Leicester have both had disappointing starts to the season, with West Ham dropping points due to the last gasp equaliser for Aston Villa, with Remi Allen saving them once again. The Hammers also lost to Brighton with 10 players on the field, after Hawa Cissoko was sent off in the first half. West Ham will be hoping that they can have a prolific goalscorer like Remi Allen, and in a tight match like this, they might need it.

After winning promotion to the WSL last season, Leicester City will be hoping to secure their position in the top division of women’s football this campaign. The Foxes will arrive having yet to register a point so far this season but came close to a draw against Aston Villa on the opening day. The team also lost 3-1 to Manchester United and will be looking at the fixture and targeting a win.

However, Leicester have been able to strengthen, bringing in experienced forward Jess Siggsworth – who joined from Manchester United during the summer. She will aid Natasha Flint, who scored 21 times across all competitions last season, including 17 in the Championship. The duo haven’t been able to leave their impact on the league just yet and will be hoping to on Sunday.

Both managers will be targeting all 3 points, in a match that could decide which teams drop down to the Championship. With both teams dropping points against relegation rivals Aston Villa, a loss here would send either team scrambling, especially when you realise that last season, 3 points was the difference between West Ham (9th) and the drop (12th).

    WHEN & WHERE?

Maisy Barker will be unavailable for selection tomorrow afternoon, with the 19-year-old defender sustaining a foot injury during the early stages of pre-season. 23-year-old defender Grace Fisk sustained a quad injury in their opening match against Brighton and Hove Albion and will be out of action for the clash against the Foxes. Hawa Cissoko is back available for selection after serving her suspension against Aston Villa last time out.

    MATCH ANALYSIS

A big game for two small teams?

    Embed from Getty Images

Let’s be honest. This is a massive game for both sides. West Ham and Leicester are both trying to stay up in the WSL, and a win for them would be massive. However, in women’s football, both teams are actually surprisingly small. So, before a big fixture for both clubs, let’s have a look back at their small beginnings.

West Ham are a FAWNL South team. From their beginnings in 2005, and even as recently as 2018, West Ham were a fourth-tier team, with their highest finish being 3rd, and they finished 3rd on three occasions and only being 3 points off promotion in 2010/11. So, how did they get into the WSL? Your answer is the restructuring plan. In the summer prior to the 18/19 season, it was announced that West Ham Ladies had successfully gained entry into the WSL, the top league in England through an application process. West Ham Ladies also changed their name to West Ham United women’s team as a result. Oh, and they’ve obviously had huge support from the men’s side. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is down to personal preference but former managing director Jack Sullivan clearly was helped by his dad, who owns the club, and likely spent more than the team actually received.

Leicester had a more organic rise to the top, but it was still aided by their men’s side. They were acquired by King Power in 2020, who also own the men’s side. The then Championship team spent a lot of money, including bringing in Remi Allen from WSL side Reading and Natasha Flint (who scored 70 goals in 66 matches for the Rovers). Due to this heavy spending, they were promoted from the Championship after winning the title.

    KEY PLAYERS

    NATASHA FLINT

    Embed from Getty Images

Natasha Flint is one of Leicester City’s greatest weapons, the shiny and lethal one which usually sits at the front, ahead of all the rest. Most dangerous loitering around the edge of the box, Natasha is able to unleash killer strikes that leave keepers stunned. A talented attacker, West Ham will need to ensure that they can keep her under wraps which is easier said than done. A fantastic and prolific goalscorer, Natasha is exactly the sort of player that many WSL clubs are looking for, and Leicester should be very glad they have her.

    LISA EVANS

    Embed from Getty Images

A move away from the most successful clubs gets you a bit more space, and being given more trust on the football pitch. It’s not like when she was at Arsenal, where if she had a few average games, there was another world-class winger (Beth Mead) ready to step in. Instead, the club would have to persist and pray, and I think that’s why Lisa Evans has joined West Ham on loan from Arsenal.

Lisa Evans has been riddled with injuries recently and in the last few seasons when fit, she wasn’t at her best. But I think she’ll finally have a chance to show why she’s so good at West Ham this season. A footballer who specialises in key moments, Lisa is exactly the sort of person that West Ham wants to be at her best for this match.

    PREDICTED LINEUP

West Ham: Arnold, Longhurst, Flaherty, Cissoko, Evans, Filis, Stringer, Brynjarsdóttir, Wyne, Leon, Walker.

Leicester City: Levell, Brougham, McManus, Tierney, Cain, Barker, Pike, Devlin, O’Brien, Flint, Sigsworth.

    PREDICTED SCORE

West Ham United 1-1 Leicester City

  • FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 6 – Captaincy Options

    FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 6 – Captaincy Options

A low-scoring game-week five saw fantasy favourite, Mohamed Salah (£12.6mn), yet again, come to the rescue of many FPL managers, following his double-digit haul against Crystal Palace last weekend. Where most differentials failed to provide returns, the Egyptian once again established his worth in an otherwise underwhelming game week for most managers.

Now, with a turn in fixtures and dilemma in captaincy ahead of tomorrow’s deadline, game-week six offers numerous captaincy candidates owing to a relatively favourable set of ties for premium assets this weekend. Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7mn) will make his second appearance at Old Trafford this season facing Aston Villa while Michail Antonio (£7.9mn), too, is expected to return to the West Ham’s starting line-up as they travel to Elland Road on Saturday.

With a puzzling set of candidates to choose from, game-week six serves up a tricky weekend for those contending for the armband. Hence, in this article, we list three assets most likely to hit double-digits this weekend, thus, narrowing down the options ahead of a pivotal game-week starting tomorrow.

    Michail Antonio (£7.9M) [LEE, (A)]

    Embed from Getty Images

Following his sending off against Southampton in game-week four, West Ham’s all-time leading goal-scorer is set to lead the line against Leeds United on Saturday. Antonio has been a revelation since the start of the campaign, having produced three consecutive double-digit haul since the start of the campaign. Despite missing out last weekend, the striker remains the highest-scoring FPL forward this season.

Facing an injury-stricken Leeds backline at the weekend, Antonio emerges as a serious candidate for the armband. The West Ham talisman has already registered four goals and the same number of assists this season, with many expected a substantial return from the forward this weekend. Leeds remain amongst the worst defensive sides in the league, having conceded 62 shots from the box and 35 on target this season. On the other hand, the Irons’ have been prolific in front of goal, with only Liverpool and the two Manchester clubs boasting superior attacking numbers in the final third of the pitch.

In a fixture likely to produce a goal-fest, Antonio boasts boundless potential in producing significant returns this weekend. With a vulnerable Leeds backline and a refreshing return to the line-up, the Jamaican has the potential to outscore several premium candidates in game-week six.

    Diogo Jota (£7.7M) [BRE, (A)]

    Embed from Getty Images

Widely considered to be amongst the most frustrating asset in recent game-weeks, the Portuguese winger has, arguably, been misfortunate in providing significant returns for FPL managers. Jota has shown immense promise starring as Liverpool’s number nine but has failed to provide an attacking return since game week two. With Roberto Firmino (£8.8mn) expected to return to the starting XI in game-week seven, the coming weekend offers Jota a chance for redemption following excruciating performances in recent fixtures.

Facing a defensively sound Brentford at the weekend, Jota will serve as an ever-threatening presence in the opposition’s box. Owing to his knack of losing his marker and provide late runs into the box, the Portuguese is bound to find himself at the end of goal-scoring opportunities at the weekend.

Though unlikely to usurp his teammate, Mohamed Salah, from being the preferred captaincy option at the weekend, Jota certainly possesses the potential to provide substantial returns in game-week six. The weekend may prove to be a deciding factor in the Portuguese’s prospects of cementing his spot in the starting line-up, thus, enlisting him as a worthy differential option ahead of a tempting tie against the Bees away from home.

    Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7M) [AVL, (H)]

    Embed from Getty Images

Undeniably the most fabled player in the footballing world since his arrival at Manchester United, Ronaldo has lived up to expectations having scored in every game, across all competitions, since returning to Old Trafford. The Portuguese international began with a brace against Newcastle United in game-week four and has since registered two goals in two appearances for the club. With a favourable tie against Aston Villa at home this weekend, Ronaldo emerges as the obvious candidate for the armband.

In addition to being lethal in front of goal, Ronaldo has been vital to United’s scrappy victories in recent fixtures. The Portuguese leads the Premier League chart for most shots (6.5) and shots on target (3.5) per game this season. Further, Ronaldo also possesses the second-highest expected goals (1.27xG) per game, in the league this campaign.

Facing a flimsy Villa backline at the weekend, Ronaldo emerges as the most favourable candidate for the armband in the coming game week. The Portuguese international is expected to add to his goal-tally against Villa, with many predicting favourable odds for a potential double-digit haul for the forward at the weekend.

  • FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 6 – Forwards Watchlist

    FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 6 – Forwards Watchlist

Owing to the rapid transition, FPL Gameweek 5 just ended a few days ago and Gameweek 6 is almost here. Last week, Southampton drew away from Manchester City, dropping them out of the top four and allowing Brighton & Hove Albion to join Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United in the European places.

However, it is time to focus on the upcoming gameweek, and keeping that in mind, let us have a look at the best forwards for your FPL teams for Gameweek 6:

    MICHAIL ANTONIO (£7.9M) [LEE, (A)]

    Embed from Getty Images

Despite his untimely red card in Gameweek 4, Antonio remains the game’s top scoring forward. With four goals and four assists, he enjoyed a fantastic start to the season. Despite skipping a game due to his ban, he has an xG of 3.60 (3rd) and an xA of 1.99 (4th). He still remains a must in FPL until he stays match fit. In Gameweek 6, West Ham will face Leeds United, which is a dream match for the Jamaican. Both teams are strong in the offensive zone, and as expected, one can expect this to be a high-scoring game.

West Ham have one of the best-attacking records in the Premier League this season. They have the fourth-best numbers in the league in terms of shots in the box (49), shots on target (27), and an xG of 9.9. They have also scored the third-most goals in the league with 11.

Leeds, in similarity to the previous season, have some of the league’s poorest defensive statistics. They have the league’s second-highest xGC while also allowing the most shots in the box (62) and also the most shots on target (35). These figures are highly promising for Antonio and his FPL owners. His numbers and productivity have been among the greatest in the league, and he is currently the most valuable player in the game.

    ALLAN SAINT-MAXIMIN (£6.6M) [WAT, (A)]

This season, Allan Saint-Maximin has established himself as a valuable FPL asset. After five gameweeks, I don’t think many people anticipated him to have such a strong start and be considered a forward alternative.

The Frenchman has scored two goals while also providing his teammates with two assists. He has produced an xG of 1.22 along with 6 shots in the box and 5 shots on target. He has also produced an xA of 1.46, 11 chances, and 2 big chances. With Callum Wilson presently sidelined, he appears to be Newcastle’s sole realistic attacking option. He is their new talisman, not only producing goals but also orchestrating games for Steve Bruce’s team.

In Gameweek 6, Newcastle faces Watford at Vicarage Road. Watford have conceded 8 goals while also allowing an xGC of 8.1 and conceding 11 big chances. Both clubs aren’t particularly strong on defense and appear to be closely matched. According to statistics, Saint-Maximin appears to be the most likely to win the match. He also appears to be a mainstay in Newcastle’s starting lineup, having started and completed 90 minutes in each premier league match thus far.

    CRISTIANO RONALDO (£12.6M) [AVL, (H)]

Ronaldo has now struck three goals in Manchester United’s opening two league games. He has definitely gotten off to a fast start, and his stats have been fantastic. The Portuguese striker has the best-attacking numbers in the league, which include the highest xG (2.76), the most shots in the box (12), the most shots on target (7), and the most big chances (5).

In Gameweek 6, Man United host Aston Villa at Old Trafford, and this appears to be another opportunity for Ronaldo to add to his goalscoring record. United have one of the best-attacking statistics in the league as well, with the most goals scored, an xG of 10.4, 54 shots in the box, 32 shots on target, and 15 big chances. In these parameters, only Liverpool and Manchester City are clear of them.

Aston Villa’s defensive numbers have been pretty decent this season. They have allowed an xGC of just 5.2 alongside just 15 shots on target and 37 shots in the box. However, it seems like keeping United silent will be a tough job for them. Since his return, the Portuguese has put up the best offensive figures in the league, and he is the sort of player who gets opportunities in most games because he spearheads the onslaught in such an attacking side.

Manchester United vs West Ham United: Match Preview | Carabao Cup 2021/22

Manchester United and West Ham United meet in the third round of the EFL Cup at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening, three days after resuming their Premier League rivalry. The Hammers were defeated 2-1 by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in London on Sunday, with Jesse Lingard scoring the game-winning goal.

It had to be Jesse Lingard who scored the winner against West Ham at the London Stadium. The England international destroyed West Ham’s perfect start to the league campaign with an 89th-minute goal, after lifting the Hammers into the Europa League last season and eventually remaining at Old Trafford amid strong desire from the London outfit.

Lingard’s winner happened to come after Cristiano Ronaldo had balanced the score after Said Benrahma’s opener, but Mr. Reliable Mark Noble had quite a wonderful chance to rescue a point from the penalty spot with practically the last kick of the game, but David de Gea saved the veteran’s attempt before being clobbered by his fellow players and manager.

United have collected 13 points from the 15 available in the 2021-22 Premier League season, battling back following their Champions League loss to Young Boys in an uninspiring fashion, albeit they remain below Chelsea and Liverpool on goal difference at this preliminary phase. The Red Devils have also scored nine goals in their two home wins over Newcastle United and Leeds United. However, they have suffered their last two EFL Cup semi-final failures – both to Manchester City – at Old Trafford in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

While the notion of breaking a five-year EFL Cup curse may be appealing to some, United’s tremendously difficult league and Champions League schedules will take priority in the coming weeks. Thus, West Ham’s chances of redeeming its Saturday setback are not completely implausible. Hammers manager David Moyes said he had no qualms about bringing on Noble to convert the last-gasp penalty on Sunday, but his team has now gone three games without a victory in the Premier League.

West Ham continued where they left off last campaign with an incredible start to the 2021-22 season, thumping Newcastle United and Leicester City, whereas the European journey began with a 2-0 Europa League win over Dinamo Zagreb. Although, they have only picked up two points in their last three Premier League games, dropping to eighth in the table. However, a visit to an underwhelming Leeds United team could offer to be a good occasion to launch a turnaround.

The Hammers’ last two EFL Cup outings ended in devastating away losses to Oxford United and Everton in the third and fourth rounds, respectively, and they haven’t advanced past round four since the 2017-18 season when Arsenal knocked them out in the quarter-finals. West Ham’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United at the weekend was their fourth loss in a row to the Red Devils in all competitions, and it has been 14 years when they last triumphed at Old Trafford, with that unforgettable Carlos Tevez goal on the closing day of the Premier League season in 2006-07.

United are still missing forwards Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo, but Edinson Cavani has a chance to play following an injury-plagued start to the season. Alex Telles is a bigger question mark, and with Phil Jones unlikely to rejoin the first team anytime soon, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly might be called up to the defence. Donny van de Beek, Diogo Dalot, and Anthony Martial are all expected to start today, while Tom Heaton may get the nod in goal while Dean Henderson works on his recovery.

    WEST HAM UNITED:

With Winston Reid currently the only definite unavailability for the visitors due to injury, West Ham striker Michail Antonio returns from suspension this week and should fit right back into the lineup as the sole striker. Lukasz Fabianski had a good game on Sunday but will be replaced by Alphonse Areola, while Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek will get some well-deserved rest as Noble and Alex Kral develop a midfield partnership. Issa Diop and Andriy Yarmolenko are two more possible replacements for Moyes, who might also choose to reintroduce Ryan Fredericks and Arthur Masuaku to the backline.

Another chance at a trophy for Solskjaer?

    Embed from Getty Images

Three months from now, on December 19, Solskjaer will have been in command of United for three years. During his time, the club has underwent a productive and much-needed renovation, although a lack of trophy possession continues to overshadow his achievements.

Any trophy will suffice for the Norwegian to put some distance between himself and his sceptics, as long as United remain towards the top of the table. The Carabao Cup may not be top on supporters’ wish lists this season, but it could present such an opportunity. This team is more than capable of traveling the distance in every game, and anything less than a win on Wednesday would raise strong doubts.

    Can the Hammers seek revenge?

    Embed from Getty Images

Manchester United and West Ham United are facing each other once again in the space of 3 days. The Premier League loss on Sunday must have made a few Hammers’ fans’ blood boil as they saw their team concede a late winner against beloved ex-loanee Jesse Lingard and also saw David Moyes bring Mark Noble on for a last-minute penalty only for it to be saved by David de Gea, who had not saved a single penalty in the last seven years.

It will definitely be a shot at redemption for the Hammers as they aim to spoil yet another chance for United to move further forward in a competition that they are yet to win since 2017.

    KEY PLAYERS

    MANCHESTER UNITED – JESSE LINGARD:

All attention will be on Lingard after his remarkable goal which sealed the victory on Sunday. He was widely reprimanded for intercepting a back-pass last Tuesday, but suddenly finds himself the hero of the moment a week later. Ohh, how opinions change so quickly!

The 28-year-old is full of optimism and will be eager to establish himself once more. This is frequently the scenario with Lingard, who is constantly mocked and has the media’s attention drawn to him. The midfielder should appreciate the opportunity to make his first start for the club since January 2019. The Englishman has already scored two goals this season, both of them while coming off the bench, and will also be looking to score once again.

WEST HAM UNITED – MICHAIL ANTONIO:

    Embed from Getty Images

Michail Antonio has been one of the best players in the country so far this season. In five games, the striker has scored four goals and provided three assists.  Given the problems that the pacey forward causes, his ban over the weekend was playfully celebrated by United fans. The Jamaican international scored a penalty at Old Trafford in July 2020, but another penalty drama is unlikely to overshadow the headlines this time.

The 31-year-old will be keen to seek revenge for his side in this fixture as West Ham aims to advance to the fourth round of the EFL Cup once again this season.

    PREDICTED LINEUPS

Manchester United (4-2-3-1): Heaton; Dalot, Bailly, Lindelof, Shaw; Van de Beek, Matic; Sancho, Mata, Lingard; Martial.

West Ham United (4-2-3-1): Areola; Fredericks, Dawson, Diop, Masuaku; Kral, Noble; Yarmolenko, Vlasic, Benrahma; Antonio.

  • FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 6 – Midfield Watchlist

    FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 6 – Midfield Watchlist

Unexpected absentees, a lack of cutting edge, and unfavourable outcomes culminated into an eventful low-scoring game-week five, as FPL managers look to launch a counter-attack with a turn in fixtures on the horizon. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£12.6mn), once again, emerged as the saving grace last weekend owing to his 12-point haul against Crystal Palace at Anfield. Additionally, while his potential challenger for the golden boot in Romelu Lukaku (£11.6mn) failed to produce returns last weekend, Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7mn), continued his excellent form, netting his third goal in two starts for Manchester United.

Now, with an exciting turn in fixtures for formidable sides such as Chelsea, Leeds United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers, the coming weekend serves as an excellent foundation to reconsider or build on one’s long-term strategy for the coming weeks. While the consideration to roll a transfer holds reasonable value, game-week six offers a tempting range of fixture-dependent options across the midfield.

Hence, in this article, we take a look at three midfielders offering the best potential value/returns in the game week and examine their long-term potential considering a favourable turn in fixtures for several sides following the weekend.

    Ismaila Sarr (£6.1M) [NEW, (H)]

    Embed from Getty Images

Coming off an exquisite match-winning performance against Norwich City last weekend, the Senegalese international offers excellent value owing to a healthy run of fixtures. Sarr produced a scintillating 15-point haul against Norwich and remains Watford’s most potent threat upfront. His 30 overall points make him the best-performing asset in his price range, while his underlying stats add to his prospects ahead of a favourable string of fixtures.

The Senegalese’s boasts the sixth-highest amount of shots (11) from within the box and ranks second for shots on target (9) this season. Additionally, Sarr boasts an excellent expected goals percentage (2.75xG) and has created nine chances with a decent number of expected assists (0.83xG). The winger is also the hornets’ primary penalty taker, thus, making him a strong contender for a midfield spot heading into a pivotal game week for FPL managers.

In Newcastle United, Sarr will be up against a fallible defensive side. The visitors have conceded the second-highest amount of goals (13) and record the worst percentage of expected goals conceded (12.4xGC) in the league this season. In addition, they have also conceded 33 shots on target and a total of 52 shots from within the box. As a result, considering a fragile backline alongside a decent run of fixtures post the international break, Sarr offers exceptional value for his price range and is capable of outscoring several higher-priced preferences in the forthcoming run of fixtures.

    Said Benrahma (£6.4M) [LEE, (A)]

    Embed from Getty Images

A surprising outcome saw the West Ham midfielder produce a double-digit haul against Manchester United last weekend, making him the second-highest scoring midfielder (39 pts.) in FPL this season. Despite a stagnant start to his career at West Ham last season, the Algerian has continued to impress since the commencement of the current campaign, having already scored three goals and recorded two assists to his name this season. And, with a wounded Leeds backline to face at the weekend, Benrahma, yet again, emerges as a favourable option in the midfield department.

With Michail Antonio (£7.9mn) set to return this weekend, Benrahma remains the pick of West Ham’s midfield options. The Algerian has already created seven chances, including two big chances at a decent number of expected assists (1.30xA). Additionally, he has also registered four shots from within the box and five on target with a tempting expected goal percentage (1.50xG).

Further, despite their lack of depth in the forward line, West Ham boasts exquisite attacking numbers, registering them as favourites against a defensively vulnerable Leeds set-up. West Ham have scored the third-highest amount of goals (11), and had the fourth-highest amount of shots in the box (49) and on target (27) this season. Meanwhile, Leeds have conceded the most amount of shots from within the box (62) and shots on target (35), and the third-worst number of big chances (13) in the league this campaign.

Hence, considering a favourable fixture for attacking returns and a decent run of games following the international break, Benhrama remains a tempting prospect in the midfield, and could potentially be subject to a rise in value in the coming weeks.

    Raphinha (£6.5M) [WHU, (H)]

    Embed from Getty Images

Despite only registering his second attacking return of the campaign against Newcastle United last weekend, Leeds’ Brazilian forward remains a strong contender for a midfield spot. Since the start of the campaign, Raphinha has been Marcelo Bielsa’s most threatening attacker on the eye, and facing a strong, yet, underperforming backline of West Ham at Elland Road this weekend, the Brazilian has the opportunity to add to his tally of attacking returns this season.

Raphinha has registered five shots from within the box and the same number of shots on targets, scoring two goals, this season. Although yet to record an assist, the winger has created ten chances and one big chance, so far, this campaign. While Leeds haven’t been the most prolific in defence, Bielsa’s side remains a threat in the opposite end of the pitch. In West Ham, they face a side who have conceded the fifth-highest amount of goals (8) and eighth-highest amount of shots (41) from within the box this season.

As a result, considering a favourable tie at the weekend followed but a scintillating run of decent fixtures going into the international break, Raphinha emerges as a valuable pick amongst a tricky bunch of midfield assets for the coming weeks. The Brazilian certainly boasts a healthy potential and could produce favourable returns at the weekend.

West Ham United vs Manchester United: Match Preview | Premier League 2021/22

Two clubs after having a contrasting European mid-week will be facing each other on which could be one of the highlights of the weekend. Manchester United, although sitting at the top of the table, the midweek loss to Young Boys has opened the door to a number of questions. A visit to London Stadium is the best place to answer all the critics. West Ham on other hand have emerged as a great unit force under Moyes and their victory against Dinamo Zagreb is the perfect example of what Moyes has helped to create.

Cristiano Ronaldo has stepped up well in each game for the Manchester Reds, but despite his goals, Manchester United have to answer a number of other questions. This game could be a big challenge for some individual players who are yet to shine and prove why on paper this team looks to compete for titles. Shouts of “Ole out” have started to re-emerge and will just get stronger if the Reds will have a performance similar to the second half in Switzerland.

Sitting just 2 points off the top, West Ham United look to better the 6th place finish last season. This will be too early to think about the final place in the league, but these are the games that the Hammers will have to capitalize on to have a season to cherish. After playing their first European game after long, it will be interesting to watch if the players and the manager will be ready for back-to-back games in a span of a very short time.

Antonio is the one man who could have impacted the result of the game to a great extent but will miss the game for West Ham after receiving a red card in the last game in the league. His absence up top will be highly missed by the Hammers as the heroics of Antonio have been praised by everyone this season. Apart from him, West Ham Reid remains the only absentee due to injury for Moyes’ side.

    Manchester United

Much similar to their opponents, Manchester United do not have any fresh injury and will miss out with long term absentees in form of Rashford, Cavani and Amad Diallo. McTominay is back in training after his surgery and could play a role in the game.

    MATCH ANALYSIS

Manchester United have brought in a number of star players in the window but Ole has not just brought the best out of them yet. Although, sitting on top of the table, but does United have settled the squad? The answer is not at all near to affirmation, as the midfield saga remains same for the Red Devils since the last season. The duo pivot still does not look near the settlement and the questions keep rising each game. Also, Pogba’s position is a big question as the Frenchman looks a certain starter in the team but where on the field is something even Ole has not being convinced yet. The last big answer for Reds has to be found on the right side of the pitch. Sancho hasn’t hit the grounds running yet in England and also Wan-Bissaka after his red card has a point to prove.

All these answers for Ole and his management will be crucial at the London Stadium, where a solid and balanced Hammers’ side wait. Calling this a battle of midfield will be an injustice as West Ham’s best will be compared to Man United’s weakness. So, the London side have to capitalize on this advantage and look to work on the extremes of the pitch. Stopping Ronaldo will be very difficult but a shift to back 3 could be the solution for the Hammers.

    PLAYER ANALYSIS

    Declan Rice

    Embed from Getty Images

The West Ham captain is just constantly working to increase his market value as the big European giants are in awe of the English midfielder. His goal in the midweek is just a cherry on the cake to the abilities he possesses. In the context of the game, his role becomes superior even before the start of the game where he can have the time to control the game from the middle of the park. This season he is just second to Paul Pogba in the most number of balls played in the last third and this just justifies the role how he leads the team. In the European game this week, he managed to recover 5 balls in addition the 4 duels he won, and the great solo run goal by him makes him the greatest threat to United.

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka

While Cristiano Ronaldo remains the player to watch out for, there is something more interesting going on at the right side of the pitch. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, once debated as one of the best right-backs in the league, is now turning as the second most controversial players on the pitch for United. His red card in the Champions League was one of the biggest reasons, if not the biggest, for Manchester United’s loss. Not just the suspension, but his overall performance in the game was questionable. He managed just a single cross during his time on the pitch, and this looks very demeaning considering they have Ronaldo up front on the end of the potential crosses. Fans have been divided on his presence on the field, with Dalot looking promising with more minutes he receives on the pitch. But, to shut his haters, his performances have to speak on the pitch.

    PREDICTED LINE-UPS

WEST HAM (3-4-3): Fabianski; Dawson, Zouma, Ogbonna; Coufal, Rice, Soucek, Cresswell; Fornals, Bowen, Benrahma.

Manchester United (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Maguire, Shaw; McTominay, Fred; Greenwood, Fernandes, Pogba; Ronaldo.
