Tottenham Hotspur have announced the extension of Heung-Min Son’s contract till 2026, with the club triggering the option to extend the captain’s contract.

The club wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “We are delighted to announce that we have exercised the option to extend Heung-Min Son’s contract, which will now run until the summer of 2026.”

There had been speculation regarding the South Korean star’s contract situation, with his deal running out in the summer of 2025. Fans feared losing their star man on a free transfer at the end of the season, with Son allowed to start negotiating with foreign clubs in January itself. However, the 32-year-old will be in North London for at least another season, giving him more time to fulfil his dream of leading Tottenham to their first trophy in over 15 years under his captaincy.

Spurs captain and legend

In his nine years in North London, Son has made 431 appearances in all competitions, scoring 169 goals. The forward is the 14th player to play 400 games for Spurs and is the club’s fifth-highest scorer in history. Not only has he achieved tremendous success with Tottenham, Son is also regarded as one of the Premier League icons. The South Korean has four Player of the Month awards and a Golden Boot and is among the top 20 Premier League goalscorers of all time with 125 goals.

Son had a fine 2023-24 campaign, scoring ten goals and assisting 17 in 34 league starts. Despite facing some injury problems this season, the South Korean has still managed 11 goal contributions in his 17 appearances for Spurs in the Premier League. However, seeing Son with just five league goals with half the season gone is strange. In three of the past four seasons, the 32-year-old has managed at least 17 goals, and a strong second half of the season could see him come close to that figure and lead Tottenham to an unlikely continental qualification.
