Talksport pundit Darren Bent has stated that Oliver Skipp’s transfer to Leicester City is the worst signing of the summer.

The former Tottenham Hotspur forward was discussing transfers from the recently concluded summer window with fellow Talksport pundit Andy Goldstein. Bent stated, “Worst signing, Oliver Skipp, and I feel so bad saying that,” to which Goldstein aptly replied, “You are a horrible man.”

Is Oliver Skipp what “Leicester needed”, asks Darren Bent

“What am I supposed to do? I just think £20 million,” Bent continued. “Is that what Leicester needed? Oliver Skipp and Harry Winks. Harry was good last year in the Championship.”

“The reason why I am not putting Dewsbury-Hall (to Chelsea) in there is because Chelsea have just thrown money left, right, and centre at loads of different players, so you almost get lost in it.”

Bent concluded: “I am not saying he is a bad player. Leicester fans can tell me, when they signed Oliver Skipp, did they automatically think ‘Right, yes, he gives us the best chance of staying up?’ Does he?”

Leicester City require a player like Oliver Skipp

It is quite a ridiculous statement. Admittedly, there was initial scepticism when Skipp was signed from Spurs for a reported fee of £20 million. However, Leicester’s performance against the North London side in the season opener showed that the Foxes required another press-resistant player alongside Harry Winks in the midfield pivot.

A quick analysis of Skipp as a player shows that he’s a perfect fit for the kind of player Steve Cooper wants at the base of his midfield. The former England youth international is composed with the ball, distributes play well under pressure, and works hard when out of possession. Additionally, the 23-year-old brings a lot of Premier League experience with him to the King Power, having made over 75 top-flight appearances for Spurs.

Skipp may not be a signing that excites fans like Bilal El Khannouss, but he is an integral member of the squad. Cooper handed Skipp his first Leicester start against Aston Villa, and he had a good all-round performance. He made 2 tackles, won six of his seven duels, and boasted a passing accuracy of 88%.

A long season awaits the Foxes, but they will take confidence from the recent PSR ruling and the glimpses of class they have shown in the opening three games. Skipp will be aiming to have a strong season and make Bent rue his words.
