Leicester City have successfully avoided a Premier League points deduction after winning their appeal regarding a potential breach of the league’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

The club announced that an independent appeal board had ruled in their favour after they had argued that the Premier League were acting outside their jurisdiction by charging them for an alleged breach of PSR rules.

Earlier this year, the Premier League had deemed the club to have broken the PSR rules by reporting losses of over £105 million across a three-year accounting period ending in June 2023. Leicester argued that as an EFL Championship side, they were not under the purview of the Premier League, and thus, their rules did not apply to them.

The Foxes’ initial appeal was rejected in July, but the matter was handed to an independent appeal board, which ruled in Leicester’s favour. The Premier League are not expected to challenge this decision.

Had Leicester not been relegated in the 2022/23 season, they certainly would have been hit with a points deduction. The club never denied breaking the PSR rules; their argument this entire time was that the rules did not apply to them as an EFL side.

The following statement has been released on the Premier League’s official website.

“The Premier League is surprised and disappointed by the independent Appeal Board’s decision to uphold an appeal lodged by Leicester City FC regarding the League’s jurisdiction over the club’s alleged breach of its Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) when the club was a member of the Premier League.”

While the manner in which the Foxes avoided the points deduction will be considered controversial, it remains a very favourable decision for the East Midlands side. Had Leicester lost the appeal, they would have been deducted a minimum of six points. This would have made staying up a monumental task for Steve Cooper’s men. Leicester can now focus on Premier League survival without the looming threat of a points deduction.
