Seydou Dembélé turned down Chelsea and Barcelona this summer for a move to Ligue 2 side Stade de Reims, and his former Mali Under-17 manager says the teenager made the right call.

The 18-year-old attacking midfielder left JMG Academy in August and joined Stade de Reims. Before that, several European clubs wanted him, including Chelsea and Barcelona, according to a report from Sport Witness.

Former Mali Under-17 manager Adama Diefla Diallo has now spoken to Africa Foot about the youngster. He calls him a “rare potential pearl” and confirms that both European heavyweights were actively chasing the playmaker.

Chelsea reportedly submitted a €1.6m (£1.3m) bid in April, while Barcelona also tried to secure his services. Neither deal got over the line.

Seydou Dembélé transfer: why did Chelsea and Barcelona want him?

Diallo handed Dembélé his debut in April 2025 at the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations, where Mali lost the final to Morocco on penalties. He scored six goals and contributed seven assists in 14 matches for Mali Under-17.

The real eye-catcher came at last November’s Under-17 World Cup, where he managed two goals and four assists in five matches. That run is what put him on the radar of Xabi Alonso’s side and the La Liga winners.

What did Dembélé’s old coach say about his Reims move?

Diallo, who did not name Chelsea or Barcelona when backing the decision, was clear that Reims was the best option. “For me, he made a very good choice. It’s already evident… From the moment he arrived, he started playing matches with the Stade de Reims youth team, and then very quickly, he played with the first team. So, for me, he couldn’t have made a better choice,” he said.

He also pointed to the practical side. “He’s at a club where he’ll progress rapidly. There won’t be many language barriers. Learning at the professional level is quick. He’ll adapt quickly; it’s a French-speaking country. At the same time, he will find young people from academies in Mali.”

The move has paid off in minutes. Dembélé has already broken into the Reims first team and has an assist from his first two Ligue 2 appearances, something that may have been far harder to come by at Stamford Bridge or Camp Nou.

How much is Seydou Dembélé worth now?

Transfermarkt now values him at €5m (£4.2m). Diallo is not surprised and thinks the figure could climb. “I’m not at all surprised that his market value has reached €5m. He could even have gone beyond that, given everything he’s done since arriving at Reims. Above all, his rapid rise to the Reims professional team,” he said.

“Since several clubs were interested in him, notably FC Barcelona, Chelsea FC, and others, that’s what drives his value up to that level. That doesn’t mean he was sold for €5m, but his value is estimated at €5m. In my opinion, it could even go beyond that.”

Author opinion: will Chelsea come back for Dembélé?

Chelsea have built a reputation for chasing the best young talent in the world, and as our look at how the club raised half a billion euros from outgoing transfers shows, they are always moving players on as well as bringing them in. A teenager who skipped Stamford Bridge to play regularly is exactly the sort of profile the Blues will keep tracking.

If Dembélé keeps impressing in France, it will not be long before Chelsea, Barcelona or other top clubs come calling again, and the next bid will need to be far bigger than €1.6m.
