Not even Amorim suffered it: the Man Utd head coach’s half-time stat that has the sack talk growing

Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth was a new low for Michael Carrick, and a damning stat now shows he has suffered something that not even Ruben Amorim did as head coach.

Carrick wanted a big response to Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League loss to Como, so he dropped Bruno Fernandes from the starting lineup after the captain’s critical midweek comments. It backfired in the most spectacular way possible at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Cherries won 3-0 at the Theatre of Dreams in both 2023 and 2024, then played out last year’s 4-4 draw, and Marco Rose’s side were full value for another emphatic win.

How Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth unfolded

Rayan opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a wonderful first-time finish at the back post. Marcus Tavernier doubled the lead just before the break.

Midway through the second half, Evanilson skipped past Senne Lammens and fired a long-range strike from a tight angle into an empty net. By then, another exodus from the Old Trafford home crowd was under way.

The Carrick and Amorim half-time stat

It was the third time in Carrick’s reign that the Red Devils went into a Premier League half-time break 2-0 down, after April’s 2-1 loss to Leeds United and the 2-0 defeat to Hull City in August, which we broke down in our Man Utd tactical breakdown vs Hull City.

Under Amorim, Man United trailed 2-0 at half time in only two Premier League games before the Portuguese was dismissed just 14 months into his reign. Carrick has now been there three times.

Where Man Utd stand after the Bournemouth defeat

United are on an eight-game winless run across all competitions, with five defeats and three draws since they thrashed Sabah 4-0 in the Champions League on 10 September. They have won just one of their eight top-flight fixtures so far in 2026-27 and sit 16th, one point above the relegation zone.

Will Man Utd sack Carrick?

Carrick took an extended lap of honour at full time, applauding the many Man United fans who refuse to turn on him and chanted “It’s Carrick, you know” in the final moments. According to Sports Mole, it was no doubt the action of a man who expects to lose his job in the morning, and it now seems a case of when rather than if the club announces his sacking.

The loudest chants, though, were reserved for Jason Wilcox and the Glazers, who were subjected to far more vile chants than Carrick. Supporters recognise that he has not been responsible for years of poor decision-making, baffling transfer calls and unpopular non-footballing measures across the club.

Author opinion

Carrick will be the first to pay with his job, but whoever follows him will suffer the same fate as Amorim, Erik ten Hag and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer unless the root cause is addressed. Dropping the captain was a gamble, and the stats say it did not pay off.
