Tottenham Hotspur have announced the arrival of Austrian centre-back Kevin Danso, who joins from French side RC Lens on a loan deal with an obligation-to-buy clause of €25 million.

According to Fabrizio Romano, fellow Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers were close to agreeing a deal with Danso, but the 26-year-old rejected their advance once Spurs approached him. Danso joins on a five-year contract and is expected to be available for Tottenham’s clash against Liverpool in the EFL Cup on February 6.

Danso’s move to Spurs materialised quickly, with the North London side only showing interest in the Austrian following centre-back Radu Drăgușin’s injury. This left Tottenham seriously short on defenders, with Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven also side-lined.

Danso is a quick, physical centre-back who is comfortable in possession and smart with his positioning. The 26-year-old has made over 100 appearances for Lens and is an Austria international. It appears to be a shrewd signing by Spurs, but whether he can adapt to the Premier League quickly remains to be seen.

The Austrian is the second January window arrival for Tottenham, with goalkeeper Antonín Kinský joining from Slavia Prague for a reported £12.5 million fee earlier this month. And there will be more arrivals. Romano also confirmed Spurs’ agreement with Chelsea for the loan signing of defender Axel Disasi. Aston Villa had also enquired about Disasi, but Chelsea refused to loan him to a Champions League rival.

Tottenham have also faced many frustrations during the window. The North London side had agreed a massive £60 million deal with Bayern Munich for wantaway striker Mathys Tel. Daniel Levy flew to Germany to agree on personal terms with the Frenchman, but Tel rejected his proposals. It was a similar story with AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori, with Spurs agreeing a  £30 million fee with the Italian giants only to be rebuffed by the Englishman.

Ange Postecoglou hopes the signings can turn their fortunes around, with Tottenham precariously close to the relegation zone.
