According to multiple reports, Tottenham Hotspur will not sign Timo Werner, on loan from RB Leipzig, on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Spurs first signed Werner last season, with the German joining them on a six-month loan deal in the January transfer window. Five goal contributions in 13 appearances in the Premier League were enough to convince the Lilywhites to loan him for another season. Tottenham negotiated a season-long loan move for Werner with the German side, with a reported £8.5 million buy option included in the deal.

However, the 28-year-old has been disappointing this season. Timo Werner has started just two Premier League games and has mustered only a single assist in his 11 appearances in all competitions. The German is also without a goal this season, with his last strike coming in April against West Ham United

Werner started as a striker and was considered one of the best forwards in Europe at one time. He scored 28 league goals for Leipzig in the 2019-20 Bundesliga season, prompting London rivals Chelsea to pay a hefty sum for him. The German’s career has unfortunately gone downhill since that move. Werner has become infamous for misses and hasn’t reached double figures in league goals scored since leaving Leipzig.

Ange Postecoglou saw Werner more as a winger than a forward due to the German’s pace and dribbling abilities. He was deployed as a left winger last season and impressed. However, with Werner struggling for form this campaign, the capital club are set to explore alternative options in the summer transfer window. The 28-year-old is on a £200,000 weekly wage, which is a large salary to pay to a player who doesn’t start often. Tottenham can’t cut his loan deal short in January unless another club show interest in him.

Mikey Moore started in left-wing against Crystal Palace, and Werner has a lot of work to do to regain his place in the starting lineup. Fortunately, the German has plenty of time to impress Postecoglou and convince the club to sign on a permanent deal.
