Leicester City fullback Victor Kristiansen has been sent home early by Denmark interim boss Lars Knudsen due to his suspension in the UEFA Nations League.

The 21-year-old played the full 90 minutes in a tough tie against Spain on October 12, a match Denmark lost 1-0. Kristiansen picked up a booking in the 85th minute and is suspended for Denmark’s next Nations League fixture against Switzerland. Considering the congested schedules in modern football, Knudsen decided to send him and fellow suspended teammate Morten Hjulmand home for some much-needed rest.

“They (Kristiansen and Hjulmand) travel home, get some rest and get ready for what awaits in their clubs. In a program where there are a lot of matches and pressure, I think it’s good for them to have a mental break once in a while.” Knudsen said.

“They probably have to deal with the physical, but mentally it’s really healthy to get a breather. It’s good for them to have a break.”

This is great news for the Foxes, who face Southampton at the St. Mary’s Stadium on October 19 in a must-win game for both teams. A fullback covers a lot of ground during a game, and with Kristiansen likely to start against the Saints, a week’s rest will ensure he’s in top condition for the match.

As fellow relegation candidates, both teams will treat this match as a six-pointer. Additionally, reports suggest that the hierarchy of both clubs have informed their respective managers that they will get sacked should they fail to win the game.

Steve Cooper has a lot of pressure on him, but he will be glad to see Kristiansen get some rest before the match. The Dane has been average this season and has struggled defensively. However, he has shown improvements in recent weeks and, as a 21-year-old, has plenty of room for growth.
