In 2015, Cloe Lacasse, a footballer hailing from Canada, found herself on an unforeseen expedition as she signed up with IBV-ithrottarfelag, a team situated on the secluded Vestmannaeyjar archipelago in the southern reaches of Iceland. Hailing from Sudbury, Ontario, Lacasse embarked on her football journey at a tender age and eventually made the decision to dedicate herself entirely to the sport. Having completed four years at the esteemed University of Iowa, Lacasse yearned for a fresh challenge. After much contemplation, she decided to embark on a journey to Iceland, enticed by the nation’s gifted players and formidable league.

Lacasse’s swift acclimation to Icelandic life, despite the challenging weather and linguistic barriers, was a testament to her resilience. The community, in turn, warmly welcomed and embraced Lacasse. In Iceland, she achieved remarkable success, emerging victorious in the Icelandic Cup, establishing herself as a prominent player in the league, and garnering Icelandic citizenship as a result of her accomplishments. The Iceland national team was captivated by this, yet a summons failed to materialise.

In the year 2019, Lacasse departed from Iceland in pursuit of a more formidable football endeavour at Benfica, a club that had only recently been established in 2017. With her impressive goal-scoring abilities and undeniable talent, she quickly made a name for herself on the pitch. Fans were quick to take notice of her skills and bestowed upon her the endearing moniker of ‘Cloe Le-Class’. Lacasse was confronted with the fierce competition between Benfica and Sporting Lisbon, a challenge for which she was not entirely equipped. Thriving in Portugal, she caught the eye of the coach of the Canadian national team. Despite not being selected for the Tokyo Olympics squad, Lacasse eventually made her international debut in a recent match against Mexico.

Lacasse’s extraordinary odyssey, spanning from Canada to Iceland and presently Portugal, has catapulted her to the vanguard of women’s football. Having made a name for herself on the global stage, she harbours ambitions of vying for a spot in the Women’s World Cup. Despite failing to advance to the knockout phase of the Champions League, Benfica has exhibited great potential in their matches against formidable adversaries.

Lacasse, with her contract at Benfica set to expire in 2024, is eagerly anticipating new prospects and keeping an open mind towards them. Her commitment to personal development as an athlete and her overall well-being are of utmost importance to her. Therefore, she has found Portugal and Benfica to be a conducive and encouraging atmosphere for her. Irrespective of the path she chooses to take in the future, Lacasse’s journey stands as a motivational account of determination and success in the realm of women’s football.
