Tottenham Hotspur have major muddles to attend to in the defensive stature and the London club has switched its focus to Italy yet again having expressed interest in signing Torino’s duo Gleison Bremer and Wilfried Singo. Fabio Paratici, the Director of Football at Spurs, is reportedly using his contacts in the Italian market to facilitate the deal.
Paratici proved to be successful in landing Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from his former club, Juventus, in January and the incomings haven’t really disappointed. Kulusevski has hit the ground running already in the Premier League with three goals and eight assists in 14 games for the Spurs. Bentancur, meanwhile, also has stepped up and has added quality depth to Conte’s midfield while forming a formidable partnership with Hojberg in the middle of the park.
According to sources around the club, Spurs have launched a proposal of around €50 million for Bremer and Singo, with “nonstop conversations” between the two parties since January. The defensive duo were mentioned in numerous rumours during the January transfer window, but no agreement between the English team and the Italian club was reached.
Fabio Paritici believes the defensive pair are best suited to Antonio Conte’s three at the back system and their individual attributes could be a huge asset for the North London club. According to the sources, Conte is keen on adding the two defenders as part of the huge summer rebuild the Italian wants to equip his team to challenge for the top four and possibly the title next season.
What will Gleison Bremer & Wilfried Singo offer Tottenham?
Gleison Bremer is a player, particularly in huge demand for the upcoming summer transfer window with the Brazilian having an impressive season at Torino. Clubs from around Europe are keeping close tabs on the defender who is reportedly set to leave Torino at the end of the current season. Bremer has all the qualities Conte needs from his center halves with the 25-year-old being powerful, strong, and adept in the air as well as ample on the ball while playing out from the back.
Wilfried Singo has also been impressive for the Italian outfit with the wingback scoring three goals this season playing as a right wing-back. The 21-year-old Ivory international has mostly featured as a right wing-back in Torino’s 3-5-2 system, but he can also play right back in a back four or centre-back, making him ideal for Conte’s 3-5-2/3-4-1-2 system.
Torino are having a great season in the Serie A with only the current top four – AC Milan, Inter Milan, Napoli, and Juventus, have conceded fewer goals than Ill Toro. They have conceded only 31 goals in 32 Serie A games with Bremer and Singo playing an integral part in this remarkable feat.
Author’s verdict
Antonio Conte clearly is short of options in his defence and has publicly expressed his concerns over Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez due to their vulnerability to defensive blunders. Japhet Tanganga has missed the majority of this season on the sidelines. Ben Davies, who is a natural left-back has had to step in as the left-center back to provide stability and has done a decent job at N17 but let’s face it, Tottenham need someone more commendable to do such a job. Gleison Bremer seems to be the perfect solution to these defensive woes with the 25-year-old comfortable in the 3-at-the-back system.
The mid-season sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo, who predominantly deployed a 4-at-the-back, left Antonio Conte with only two natural wingbacks at the club Matt Doherty and Ryan Sessegnon. Emerson Royal who joined the club in the summer window for a fee of around €30 million has been used as a right wing-back by Conte and the Italian hasn’t been impressed with the Brazilian’s performances with rumours that he could be up for sale in the summer already.
Ryan Sessegnon still hasn’t adjusted to life at Spurs with the Englishman dealing with recurring injuries for the most part of his career at the club. The 21-year-old still has a bright future ahead of him and Conte can still develop him into one of the finest wingbacks in the world with the former Fulham player already showing glimpses of his talent. Matt Doherty has been another disappointing recruit with the Irishman consistently inconsistent. The signing of Wilfried Singo would solve the wingback issue for Conte with his versatility which makes his signing a no-brainer.
Sessegnon on the left flank and Singo on the right flank supplying crosses to the ever-lethal Harry Kane (hoping he were to stay) under Conte would certainly be the dream for any Spurs faithful come next season. Exciting times ahead for the North London club with Conte’s first full season with Spurs set to begin next season and his last first full first season with an English team ended with him lifting the PL trophy!
