English Premier League is widely regarded as the best league in the world, and arguably the most competitive and hardest to predict. It’s host to an enormous amount of talent and has continued to bring in and develop more megastars.

In the past, Real Madrid and Barcelona were two teams known for recruiting and developing the best stars. But the pendulum appears to have swung towards Premier League teams. England has enjoyed many super talents in the past. Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Thierry Henry, Didier Drogba and Sergio Aguero are just a few among the many elite names who have made their marks in English soccer.

And of course, there’s that man we mustn’t fail to mention. A 5× Ballon d’Or winner who made a surprise return to Old Trafford at the start of the season. We’re talking of none other than the legend, Cristiano Ronaldo.

These players have enjoyed a stellar career, writing several league records, winning multiple championships, and playing a pivotal role in the league’s global appeal. And we can’t be more grateful for their contributions.

With the many talents playing in the league, arguments about the best players in the league are inevitable. This is why we decided to rank the best Premier League players in the 2021/22 season based on overall performances and the contributions they make to their respective clubs.

We’d like to note that some of the players on this list aren’t having their best spells, but are key to their team’s success this season.

N’Golo Kanté (Chelsea)

N’Golo Kanté remains one of the best midfielders in the past 10 years. Chelsea midfielder was pivotal to the Blues’ Champions League run last year, especially during the knockout stage. He was also in the Ballon d’Or conversation for most parts of last year.

He may not have performed up to his standards so far this season, but that’s largely due to injuries. Nevertheless, we can’t argue Kanté’s contribution to Chelsea’s game pace and overall performance. Easily the best player on the Blues’ roster.

Son Heung-min (Tottenham)

One could argue that Son has, perhaps, been the most overlooked player on the world stage for some time now. But even the meanest of pundits can’t deny his contribution to a Spurs team that have competed at the highest level for years. He’s such an attacking force to reckon with!

Despite a slow start to the season, the South Korean has been able to hit the net 17 times and provide seven assists in 29 games. Son is currently on a three-game scoring streak, hitting the net six times.

Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)

Merseyside will forever be grateful for the acquisition of Virgil van Dijk, one of, if not the league’s best defensive players. The former European Player of the Year has been almost impenetrable, especially since the start of 2022.

Liverpool currently have the second-best odds of winning the title, according to English Premier League betting experts, and the Dutchman is a key factor to the Reds’ current run of form.

Joao Cancelo (Manchester City)

Pep Guardiola has a reputation for bringing the best out of a player throughout his illustrious coaching career. This year, that player happens to be Joao Cancelo.

We can make a case for the Portuguese being the best player this season without much argument. Cancelo’s ability to coordinate City’s defence and make forward runs reminds you of the great Dani Alves (another player who matured under Pep). Talk about a dynamic player!

Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

Chelsea fans will continue to bite their fingers every time they remember they once had Mo Salah and KDB on their roster. And why not? De Bruyne has morphed into a midfield juggernaut, again thanks to Pep Guardiola.

Man City have won three of the last four premier league titles, thanks in large part to this guy. And they could as well do it again this season. The Belgian has some of the craziest crossing dexterity the league has ever seen. His ability to spot players and split any defence with a pass is unrivalled in the EPL.

Add physicality, pace, and long-range shot power, and you’ve got yourself the complete midfield package that is Kevin De Bruyne. His injury woes may have slowed him down this season, but the fact remains that he’s the most important player in the Etihad.

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

Mo is, without a doubt, the best Premier League player this season, and arguably the best soccer player in the world right now.

Salah’s ability to penetrate through any defence has been second to none this season. His sudden change of pace when attacking the opposition, dribbling skills, and goal contributions make him a nightmare for the opposition.

Mo Salah is the highest goal scorer in the Premier League with 22 goals and has provided 12 assists, the second-most among Premier League players.

Conclusion

It’s hard to pick the best players in the league, as this is usually a subjective argument. We won’t fail to mention players like Ikay Gundogan, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota, and Thiago Silva who have all played key roles in their team’s success this season.
