With the January transfer window inching ever closer, teams will have another chance to strengthen their squads and replenish their options for the second half of the season. Although a high-profile transfer in the winter window is unlikely, in the world of football, nothing can be ruled out. As December gradually comes to an end, rumors and speculations of all sorts start flying around. Big clubs especially are always in the market for new and better players, and this window will be no different.

One such big club that is in the market for new players is the reigning European Champions Chelsea. The London club are said to be in ‘pole position’ to sign Torino central defender Gleison Bremer in the upcoming window. The 24-year-old has turned heads with his brilliant performances and helped Torino escape relegation last season. His displays have caught the eyes of a host of big clubs like Liverpool, Inter Milan, Napoli, AC Milan, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Chelsea as well.

Chelsea have 4 defenders who are out of contract in 2022, with the contracts of Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, and Cesar Azpilicueta all set to expire in the summer of 2022. Antonio Rudiger is set to leave the club next year, with Real Madrid interested in the German, and Chelsea unwilling to meet his wage demands. This leaves Thomas Tuchel without his starting center-back, and short on experience at the back as well. With Thiago Silva himself now 37, there are questions over his ability to play consistently in the fast-paced and intense life of Premier League, and if his legs will give him the same support they have over the years.

As a result, it looks like there could be a few new arrivals in the Chelsea backline, starting with the Brazilian Gleison Bremer in January. With Tuchel preferring to play with 3 center-backs, the signing of Bremer could turn out to be a stroke of genius. The German coach needs depth in his squad and some young legs as well, and Bremer could prove to be perfect for him. Chelsea have fallen behind the leaders Man City and Liverpool in this season’s title race, with the Blues winning only two of their last 5 Premier League games and now find themselves 6 points behind Man City. The Blues have faced some defensive issues lately, and a defensive signing in the January window would be a smart choice by the title hopefuls.

Last season, Bremer put up one of the best defensive numbers in the league, despite his team fighting a relegation battle for the majority of the season. He had a whopping 88 interceptions, ranking him 2nd among players in the top 5 leagues in interceptions. Gleison Bremer is not a typical ball-playing defender, but he had a passing success rate of 84.4%, and he is very comfortable with short-range passes. He is quickly building a reputation as a press-resistant defender, and he has showcased that talent on various occasions in the Serie A, escaping opposition pressure easily. He is very good at set-pieces and his big frame is always a threat from corners and free kicks. It is no surprise he has received attention from top clubs, and with his contract set to expire in 2023, Torino could soon cash in on him.

Although the winter transfers are never easy, Chelsea have a history of getting the players they want. Gleison Bremer could be on his way to Stamford Bridge soon, with the European Champions very keen on bringing the 24-year-old to London. Bremer has all the makings of establishing himself on the biggest stage in football, and a move to Chelsea will provide him with that opportunity to prove his talent. It remains to see if a move comes to fruition, but there is no doubt that it could be a brilliant signing for Chelsea if it happens.
