SkySports have reported that Paris Saint-Germain skipper Thiago Silva is all set to join Chelsea on a one-year long deal.
The Copa America winner is now a free agent after he played his last match against FC Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.
After the match an emotional Silva said, “It was my last game in Paris. I am sad. I apologise to the fans. I thank all the supporters for their love. I’ll come back, with another role, in this club I loved. I want to play for another 3-4 years and play in the World Cup in Qatar.”
Silva who has spent eight years in Paris following his switch from AC Milan in 2012 will follow Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner as the third summer signing season for the Blues.
Chelsea are looking to strengthen in the defensive areas after the horrible defensive displays nearly cost them a place in the Champions League. Along with Silva, Chelsea are close to agreeing deals for Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell and Bayer Leverkusen forward Kai Havertz.
Thiago Silva now’s ready to start a new chapter, confirmed.
He’ll give his final answer on next week – Chelsea confident to sign him as free agent and convinced he’s going to accept. Chilwell is coming after last details, Thiago really close too. 🔵 #CFC #Chelsea #PSG #transfers https://t.co/m8yPwlYuPo— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) August 23, 2020
Thiago Silva will bring some needed leadership in the shaky Blues backline. He is a winner of eight league titles across Italy and France but has failed to achieve the continental glory.
In 19-20 season, Thiago completed 2.6 tackles&interceptions and cleared the ball 3.7 times per match. He also completed 75 passes with a pass accuracy of 94.2% and has been named in Ligue 1 team of the year 7 times consecutively from 2012 to 2019.
If the West Londoners end up agreeing a deal for the Brazilian, it will mean one of the four current centre options of Fikayo Tomori, Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger will end up being sold or loaned to another club.
After announcing the arrival of 18-year old defender Xavier Mbuyamba, Silva can be a vital part in his development and he offer a wealth of experience to this youngster.
