Mikel Arteta has leapt to the defence of David Luiz after the centre-back’s poor display against Manchester City, adding that it does not change his stance on the player.

Arsenal’s return to Premier League action didn’t go to plan as they were beaten by the defending champions by 3-0 after the full time.

The Brazilian was among notable key players who were left on the bench for the crunch encounter but an injury to Pablo Mari forced the manager into making an early change, with Luiz coming on.

Former Chelsea defender stayed on the pitch for less than an hour, as he was dismissed for a foul on Riyad Mahrez in the penalty box.

The red card was not the only negative about his display. He also made an error which led to Raheem Sterling opening the score on Wednesday.

However, Arteta in his post match interview stood by the experienced centre-back, insisting that he will not judge the defender over the game against the Citizens.

“He [Luiz] has spoken in the dressing room,” said Arteta. “David is someone who is very honest and straightforward. I’m sure he will talk to you guys and explain his feelings but my opinion on David hasn’t changed.

“The moment I joined, what he’s done for the team, what he’s done for me, it won’t change because he had a difficult performance tonight.”

Luiz’s deal the Emirates Stadium is set to expire after the end of the season, but the Gunners do have an option to extend it for another year.

But Arteta has said his performances against City will have no impact on the decision the club intends to make with regards to his contract.

“It won’t change. For me, no,” added the Spaniard. “Whatever we’re going to do, or did before today’s game, we will keep it internally.”

Luiz has made 32 appearances across all competitions for the north London club since moving from Chelsea last summer for £8 million.
