The Sun reports that Sheffield United have also joined the race for young Everton defender Mason Holgate and are willing to sign him in January.
However, the Blades are not the only Premier League team who are interested in Holgate. Bournemouth are also keen on the 23-year old as they are hunting for potential replacements for Nathan Ake. The Dutchman is on the transfer list of many clubs and the Cherries are expecting offers for him.
Newcastle United are also said to be keeping tabs on Holgate as manager Steve Bruce looks to sign young British talent.
Mason Holgate is worth around £14 Million, who can play defensively on the right as well as centrally. However, whether the Toffees sell him, depends on the new manager they appoint.
Duncan Ferguson is the caretaker manager at Goddison Park since the departure of Marco Silva, and the club are yet to sign a permanent replacement. Former manager David Moyes and Carlo Ancelotti are said to be favorites for the job.
There was a similar rumor about a year ago linking Holgate to Bramall Lane, however he ended up joining West Bromwich Albion on loan instead. Then again in August, Holgate was linked with the Blades, his value being around £10 Million at that time.
With 10 League appearances this season, and some solid performances, his value has risen. And it is understandable why Blades are so keen on the defender.
It is understood that both Kieron Freeman and Kean Bryan could be on the move in January. This would leave Chris Wilder with no backup for George Baldock at right-wing back and also very limited options in the central defense.
With Holgate, Wilder gets a versatile defender, who can play in both these positions. Also, given the fact that he is young, means he can develop a lot at Sheffield United. And with top flight experience under his belt already, Sheffield United would not want to let the opportunity of signing him go away.
