Wolverhampton Wanderers vs West Ham United: Match Preview | Premier League 2021/22

Talk about in-form teams and one doesn’t have to look away from this weekend’s Premier League tie as West Ham United visits Molineux Stadium. The Premier League is back after the International Break and the weekend promises to compensate for the fortnight-long boredom.

Saturday witnesses two managers who are being rated as two of the best in the league, take on each other. While Wolves will enjoy the home advantage, the Hammers will be full of confidence after their win against the Liverpool side. The game seems to be too tough to call but one thing that for sure is guaranteed is a game that will be full of great moments and a tactical masterclass.

Ogbonna came out due to a knee injury against Liverpool and due to this, he will be sidelined for long. But the Hammers’ fans can be happy with the fact that Rice and Fornals seem ready for the game. There were questions over Rice’s availability in the game after the English midfielder missed out on both the international games, but the midfielder will be fit for the weekend game.

Bruno Lage will have the same squad that he had against Crystal Palace as there are no new injury concerns with Pedro, Hugo, Jonny, Marcal, and Yerson remaining the absentees.

    MATCH ANALYSIS

    Embed from Getty Images

Hammers are hammering in the league and they are arguably the most in-form team in the league. The last game against Liverpool was just the proof of why they should be rated amongst the other top teams in the league. Sitting comfortably 3rd in the league, they are just 3 points off the top spot and can give a run to many top teams who are fighting for the Champions League spot. The midfield as always has been doing exceptionally well for West Ham United and the attacking output has just delivered their best. Against Liverpool, it would have been wrong to say that the Hammers did not deserve to win. With Zouma in the side, the backline looks strong to go against opposition attacks and will this time be up against Jimenez and Hwang who, too have been doing great work for Wolves.

Wolves have left back their relegation zone scare from the start of the season as they have done well since to sit in the top half of the table. Last weekend, they suffered a blip against Viera’s Crystal Palace. The match wasn’t the best for Wolves but they definitely would have forgotten the result and would be ready to step up against the Hammers and prove their substance in the league. Under Lage, one can expect Wolves to take the match with utmost enthusiasm and try to trouble the Hammers.

    PLAYER ANALYSIS

    Said Benrahma

    Embed from Getty Images

With all the attention being grabbed by Antonio up top, one can not ignore the fact of how good Benrahma has been. The highly-rated winger has finally steeped up his confidence and the visuals are very much visible on the pitch. The racked-up confidence has helped the Algerian to score his first international goal. The 26-year-old made a great start to the season but had his graph go down but recently has picked up his form back and the goal in the International Break just should definitely send warning signals to the Wolves side. Since his transfer from Brentford, West Ham fans were waiting for him to show his quality, and despite glimpse of good form, he was never able to be in the limelight. But now the Algerian looks perfect for the Hammers from the left side where he very well can do what he is rated for.

    Adama Traore

    Embed from Getty Images

Traore is just the most familiar name in the Wolves squad, as the ex-Barcelona player has very well sidelined all the negativities around him and has always given his critics a suitable reply. Recently, he is under the radar again with his finishing being questioned. His ability to dribble past just can not be questioned as it is amongst the highest-rated stars in the top 5 leagues in Europe. But his lack of clinical finishes just keeps him out of the frame of being the best. Also, Traore is back in the news as Barcelona eye the wide playmaker in the transfer window with Liverpool in competition. To keep his market value up, and to give what Wolves’ fans want, he should fight for the starting spot now. With Podence also sitting on the bench, if the Jamaican is unable to deliver in the coming games, he might see himself out of plans at Wolves

    PREDICTED LINEUPS

  • Arsenal Women 4-0 West Ham United Women: Match Report | WSL 2021/22

Arsenal Women 4-0 West Ham United Women: Match Report | WSL 2021/22

West Ham Women faced Arsenal Women on Sunday and were looking to take the Gunners’ unbeaten run away. Arsenal were looking to continue to take a step away from Chelsea Women, who were level on points after playing the day before. So, what happened? Find out in the match report below.

    Starting XI

Arsenal Women starting XI: Zinsberger, McCabe, Wubben-Moy, Williamson, Maritz, Maanum, Little, Iwabuchi, Foord, Parris, Mead.

West Ham United Women starting XI: Arnold, Longhurst, Flaherty, Cissoko, Wyne, Brynjarsdóttir, Yallop, Svitková, Stringer, Walker, Hasegawa.

The Gunners were looking to continue their good start to the season by beating West Ham and Eidevall was raring to start the match. The players who were rested last match still aren’t staring, but Arsenal do have the depth to give players a rest. Eidevall made 3 changes to his side, with Jordan Nobbs, Lia Wälti, and Jen Beattie all not starting. Simone Boye is back on the bench, after recovering from an injury.

West Ham were looking to make it 0 losses in 6 matches, in what would be a good run for the Hammers. When Oli Harder took over the Hammers, he said, “I’m looking forward to the opportunity of not only working with such a historic club but, more importantly, a club that has committed itself to the development and progression of the women’s game. I’m relishing the challenge of moving forward the West Ham United women’s team into what will no doubt be a bright future.” West Ham have now recorded their best start to a WSL season ever and were looking to continue that.

    FIRST HALF STARTS

Kim Little (Arsenal 1-0 West Ham)

    Embed from Getty Images

Arsenal took the lead just before halftime, and who else but Kim Little was there to score it. After a lay-off from Beth Mead, who continues her brilliant start to the season, Little dribbled past the West Ham defenders and neatly placed the ball into the back of the net.

    HALF TIME

Arsenal were on top of the match, and managed to keep West Ham away from the goal, reducing them to only shooting on sight. A change at the break for West Ham, as Grace Fisk replaces Hawa Cissoko, which seems like more of a swap for energy than a tactical one.

    SECOND HALF STARTS

Kim Little (Arsenal 2-0 West Ham)

Arsenal scored again, and it was again through captain Kim Little. Maritz had the ball out wide, and fizzed it through to Kim Little, who took it right and then smashed it past Arnold at the near post. 2-0.

Beth Mead (Arsenal 3-0 West Ham)

    Embed from Getty Images

Beth Mead scored. What’s new? For club and country, she has scored 11 goals and collected 16 assists in 18 matches. That makes her goal contribution ratio 1.5. Beth Mead is certainly on fire, and Arsenal fans are having a lot of fun watching her. It was a nice goal, as she received the ball from Nikita Parris and fired the ball straight into the top left corner. And that made it 3-0 to the Arsenal!

Grace Fisk (Arsenal 4-0 West Ham)

It was a sad end to the match for Grace Fisk, as she scored in her own goal to make it 4-0 to Arsenal. It seemed like she was in two minds on whether to try and clear it or to let it go past and hope it was dealt with, and it was that indecision which cost her.

    FULL TIME

And after that, it was full-time. It was another brilliant match for the Gunners, and it was also another match (let’s be honest, more of a rarity) that I predicted my key player. It was Kim Little that I picked, but you could argue that Beth Mead was better tonight. I was also conflicted about if I should pick 4-0 or 5-1, but I picked the latter, so no correct score to go along with it. Arsenal were dominant, and stay 3 points clear of Chelsea as a result. Full time, Arsenal 4, West Ham 0.

  • Arsenal Women vs West Ham United Women: Match Preview | WSL 2021/22

Arsenal Women vs West Ham United Women: Match Preview | WSL 2021/22

Arsenal Women will face a West Ham Women side who haven’t been that bad this season, with the Irons stunningly beating Manchester City 2-0. However, with the Gunners’ still unbeaten in the WSL, it will be extremely difficult for West Ham to beat them, especially when they’re at Meadow Park. Arsenal are on form right now, with wins against Chelsea Women, Hoffenheim Women, and Manchester City Women making them the WSL title favourites, so they won’t be easy to beat.

As mentioned earlier, West Ham has had a mixed start to their season, with the East London side finding themselves in sixth place in the top flight as they seek to improve on eighth and ninth-placed finishes in the last two seasons. However, they haven’t been as bad as some people thought they would be, with results against the likes of Aston Villa and Manchester City.

Arsenal have been amazing this season, (as also mentioned earlier) with the Gunners being on top form, and not losing to any team barring Barcelona (who are arguably the best in the world right now). However, the Gunners have started to seem more consistent in the way they play (no matter the opposition), which has been shown on the pitch as high pressing fluid movement.

Jonas Eidevall will have had his motivation increased after making his way to his first-ever final with Arsenal, and will be looking to continue his winning streak with Arsenal. Eidevall will be excited with the final in his mind, and so will probably show that excitement on the pitch. And this quote really sums up what I’m trying to say, it’s also funny, so I’ll share it. “The closest I’ve come to being at Wembley was when I bought tickets for Adele a few years ago but then my wife and I couldn’t go. I’m definitely going this time!”

West Ham manager Olli Harder will look to bounce back from a poor result in his last WSL match, but it goes without saying that a win against a team as good as Arsenal will be extremely difficult for them to manage.

    ANALYSIS

    VM11 x TH77?

    Embed from Getty Images

AH YES! Vivianne Miedema, arguably the best striker in the world, and Tobin Heath, arguably one of the best wingers in the world. So, together, they create one of the most lethal attacking forces in the world. With the likes of Beth Mead and Nikita Parris being available for that left-wing spot, Arsenal’s attack is dangerous, and West Ham certainly are scared.

But so far, we’ve only seen individual brilliance from each of them, and not any goals which they’ve collaborated on together. But I think this may be the match where that all changes. Both Heath and Miedema were rested against Brighton, and I think that could give them the energy they need to put in a world-class shift against West Ham.

    Tough Timing for the Hammers?

    Embed from Getty Images

Recently, West Ham have been quite a force to be reckoned with, as they’ve picked up over the likes of Manchester City and Aston Villa. It’s clear that the Hammers want to establish their current position in the WSL before they face the big 3, which is why I think that it’s so unlucky that they face Arsenal right in the middle of a run of easier fixtures.

However, you have to look on the flip side of the coin and realise that this could actually be good for them, as they are going into the match with confidence. Apart from the fact that this is a London derby, it’s also a chance for West Ham to prove that that win against Man City wasn’t a fluke result.

    KEY PLAYERS

    KIM LITTLE

    Embed from Getty Images

What? Didn’t I literally just say that Tobin Heath and Vivianne Miedema were about to “put in a world-class shift against West Ham? ” Well, yes, but I think that it’ll only be possible because of Kim. And if Tobin and Viv don’t play together, Kim Little will still be a vital part of the squad. Eidevall may rest those two, but resting Kim is a dangerous game. Kim Little is basically like Arsenal’s oxygen. Sure, you might notice how great it is every once in a while, but if it isn’t there when you need it, you can be in a very sticky situation.

    YUI HASEGAWA

    Embed from Getty Images

Yui Hasegawa. I think before I jump into how much of a great signing she’s been for West Ham, I need to talk about why I didn’t pick someone who’s looking to prove a point, namely, Lisa Evans.

Firstly, I’m not even sure if Lisa will be allowed to play. I mean, she’s on loan from Arsenal, so she probably won’t. She also hasn’t played many matches this season, so even if she wasn’t on loan from them, I doubt she’d play. So, now, let’s talk about the Japanese international that Arsenal refused to tag in their instagram post.

Hasegawa is the Mana Iwabuchi of West Ham. Apart from the obvious comparisons, (they’re both Japanese, they’re both footballers), they’re both players who are (or were for Mana) too good for their clubs. Mana was way too good for Villa, and Hasegawa is too good for West Ham. She’s going to make an upgrade to another WSL team (my money’s on Everton) and is just using West Ham as a stepping stone. Why am I so confident? Well, the fact that she had a 0.4 (recurring) goal contribution ratio for AC Milan says enough.

    PREDICTED LINEUP

Arsenal predicted XI: Zinsberger, McCabe, Williamson, Beattie, Maritz, Nobbs, Little, Iwabuchi, Parris, Miedema, Heath.

West Ham predicted XI: Arnold, Longhurst, Flaherty, Cissoko, Wyne, Brynjarsdottir, Stringer, Svitkova, Hasegawa, Walker, Yallop.

  • West Ham United vs Liverpool: Match Preview | Premier League 2021/22

West Ham United vs Liverpool: Match Preview | Premier League 2021/22

The 11th match week of the 2021/22 Premier League is here, and with the last international break of the calendar year just around the corner, teams and players will be looking to go out on a high. This week, title hopefuls Liverpool make the trip to the capital to face a resurgent West Ham United at the London Stadium on Sunday.

West Ham United come into this game on the back of a draw in the midweek against Belgian club Genk in the UEFA Europa League. There were plenty of positives to take from that 2-2 draw for David Moyes. Despite their advancement to the knockout stage being postponed for now, the Hammers will be happy with a point away from home. Moyes will especially be happy with Said Benrahma who almost single-handedly won the game for his team. However, a late own goal by Tomas Soucek denied them a victory in Belgium, and they will now turn their focus to Liverpool at home on Sunday.

Liverpool were brilliant in the midweek Champions League fixture against Atletico Madrid, as the Merseyside Reds became the fourth team alongside Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Ajax to qualify for the last 16 of the UCL. They scored two quick-fire goals inside the first 25 minutes and set the tone for the game. Things were made much easier for them after Atletico were brought down to ten men after defender Felipe Luis was sent off in the 36th minute. Liverpool dominated the rest of the game and had a goal ruled out for offside in the second half, as they cruised to a 2-0 win at home.

They will now turn their attention to Sunday’s game against West Ham and with hopes to extend their wonderful away record this season, which has seen them score 19 goals, conceding just 3 and lose none in 5 league games so far.

West Ham loanee Alex Kral recovered from COVID-19 to feature from the bench against Genk on Thursday night, making his European debut for the club in the process and will be in contention to be in the matchday squad again on Sunday.

In a rare sight, Kral’s return means that the Hammers have no players on the sideline, and currently have a fully fit squad, which should provide Moyes with many options. Czech right-back Vladimir Coufal recovered from a groin injury to start against Genk and even provided an assist for Benrahma’s first goal. He will be glad with a productive outing and will be vying with Ben Johnson for a spot in the starting lineup on Sunday.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had an injury boost ahead of the game against Atletico Madrid when Spanish midfielder Thiago returned to the squad after spending a lengthy time on the sidelines. The Spaniard was brought on for Fabinho- who himself is still returning to full fitness from his injury layoff- in the 60th minute and could be in contention for a spot on the bench, or even an unlikely start on Sunday. However, Naby Keita and James Milner were both absent from the squad in the midweek, and are expected to miss out on the journey to London as well.

Defender Joe Gomez is nursing a calf injury and is unlikely to feature in Sunday’s game.  Youngster Harvey Elliot continues to recover from his horrible ankle injury, and is expected to spend a long time away from the pitch. There are also doubts over Brazilian Roberto Firmino’s availability on Sunday, and Diogo Jota will be expected to start if the striker is declared unfit.

    KEY PLAYERS:

    Said Benrahma

    Embed from Getty Images

The man in hot form at the moment, Benrahma stock has risen up multifold since the season began, with the Algerian forward showing his class and talent in the Premier League. Life did not get off to a good start for him when he first moved across town from Brentford to West Ham, but after a rocky first season, the 26-year-old is really shining now.

With 15 appearances in all competitions so far, the former Brentford man has scored 6 goals and assisted 3 and has been an instrumental figure in the West Ham attack. He has formed a brilliant partnership with the likes of Bowen and Antonio, and the three in tandem, have troubled opposition defenders a lot this season. David Moyes has started relying a lot more on the Algerian, with the forward being named in the starting 11 in all league games this season.

His creativity and pace, has flourished in a West Ham team that breaks fast and with his ability to turn a defender inside out with his quick turn of pace, Benrahma is fast becoming one of the most dangerous players in the league. He can shoot well from outside the box and is gradually cementing his place as the chief creator in the West Ham team. With a brace against Genk in the midweek fixture, Benrahma showed why he is un-droppable at the moment, and he will be expected to trouble Liverpool’s strong defense on Sunday.

    Mo Salah

    Embed from Getty Images

Mo Salah needs no introduction now, and is undoubtedly one of the best players in the league. He is a player that strikes fear into hearts of defenders, and is the one they focus on. He has scored in 8 league games out of 10 this season and has brought his tally up to 10 goals, leading the race for the Premier League Golden Boot. Although it is very early in the season, the signs are there that the Egyptian will go on to win his third top scorer award in the league.

The Egyptian had an impactful evening against Brighton and Hove Albion in the last league game, and although he failed to score in the 2-2 draw at Anfield, the winger provided a very simple assist for Henderson who scored the game’s first goal from the edge of the box. His constant runs left the Brighton defense confused and he would be disappointed to come away with just an assist from the game. Expect to see more of the same on Sunday, and he will be hoping for a much better outing then.

    MATCH ANALYSIS:

CAN WEST HAM CONTINUE THEIR FORM AGAINST LIVERPOOL?

    Embed from Getty Images

It would be safe to say that David Moyes’ second stint at the club has exceeded expectations, with no one predicting the Hammers to be challenging for the top 4 places for two years in a row. When he returned to the club for a second time, West Ham were sitting 17th and in danger of relegation. Moyes managed the team to survival in the few remaining games, and his next season in charge saw a huge upturn in form, with the Irons achieving 6th place and a club-record total of 65 points in the 2020-21 season. Since that season, they have played some exceptional football, and have been dominating the Europa League this season as well.

West Ham United have been consistent this season. Despite key players suffering injuries on various occasions, it has not deterred the Scottish manager and his men, and the Hammers have marched on with confidence, and now they face arguably their sternest test of the season. Liverpool have destroyed anything and everything in their path, and will look to continue to do so on Sunday. After the midweek win against Atletico Madrid, fatigue could play a factor, but Jurgen Klopp will want to put out his best team and will be wary of taking West Ham lightly.

    Embed from Getty Images

Liverpool will need to be on top form on Sunday, and especially after the dropped points at home against Brighton and Hove Albion last week, they will want all three points to get back to winning ways in the league. However, West Ham will prove to be very tricky opponents, with their ability to be solid defensively and not give into opposition pressure. They are very dangerous on the break, and with extremely pacey and devilishly tricky players like Jarrod Bowen, Said Benrahma and Michail Antonio, their attacking threat is one to be taken very seriously.

A result against Liverpool would do West Ham a world of good, while it would harm the Merseyside Reds and their title challenge. With the build-up surrounding the fixture, it all makes up for a thrilling and enticing game and would definitely be one to watch.

    PREDICTED LINEUPS:

West Ham predicted XI: Lukasz Fabianski; Ben Johnson, Angelo Ogbonna, Kurt Zouma, Aaron Cresswell; Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek; Jarrod Bowen, Said Benrahma, Pablo Fornals; Michail Antonio.

Liverpool predicted XI: Allison; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson; Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Fabinho, Curtis Jones; Mo Salah, Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane.

Aston Villa vs West Ham United: Match Preview | Premier League 2021/22

West Ham have hammered their way into the League Cup quarter-finals, their midweek penalty shootout heroics ensured that they beat the Cup holders and Champions of England to get through to the next round of the competition. All the West Ham players scored showing nerves of steel, with Benrahma scoring the decisive penalty to hand West Ham the win. This weekend however they face a completely different test in Aston Villa. The Villains have had a few more days to prepare for this game, no midweek fixture has done them a favour.

Aston Villa have slipped down the table in the last few gameweeks, and after last week’s defeat at Arsenal further illustrated how poor Villa have been recently. Jacob Ramsey’s goal was a silver lining in an otherwise sour defeat, Villa really have a massive talent on their hands. Villa should also make the best of playing at home.

For the Hammers, summer arrival Alex Kral won’t feature following a positive test for Covid-19.

Vladimir Coufal has been suffering from a groin injury, but he did return with a late cameo against Manchester City and should be fit for the weekend. The rest of the squad are available for selection.

    Match Analysis:

    Embed from Getty Images

Aston Villa need to come up with something special at home if they are to trump West Ham especially the kind of form that Villa have been in. 3 defeats on the spin don’t really tell the full story, as the defensive worries start to mount for Aston Villa. The first priority for Dean Smith and his men will be to have a solid defensive structure, with an emphasis on keeping a clean sheet.

There is one major disadvantage for Aston Villa that West Ham will be licking their lips at, set pieces have been the bane of Villa’s existence in the last few games, even when Villa do manage to defend set-piece well a deflection undoes them. West Ham thrives on set pieces, having one of the tallest average height in the Premier League and with Aaron Creswell’s wicked deliveries West Ham are a major threat from a dead ball situation.

Dean Smith and his coaching staff will have to plan carefully for the set pieces, while also making sure they take their chances in attack when they fall to them.

    Key Players

    Aston Villa: Leon Bailey

    Embed from Getty Images

The announcement of the signing of Leon Bailey was a massive surprise, no one expected Villa to make a move for the forward and he made an instant impact on his debut getting a goal and an assist in the space of just 15 minutes. The forward also picked up an injury in the same game, limiting his involvement for Villa, since then there have been glimpses of the talent that Bailey brings, but it might take a bit longer for him to settle in. This is exactly the kind of game that could bring out the best in him with his link up with Mcginn and Danny Ings really catching the eye.

    West Ham: Michail Antonio

    Embed from Getty Images

West Ham have their all-time top goalscorer to thank for their fine form in the Premier League and although David Moyes has seen some minor set backs this season, their form in all competitions has been tremendous. After a memorable midweek victory against City, West Ham and Antonio will be looking to add to their tally of victories. Reaching the milestone of top goalscorer has given Antonio a real boost of confidence and has spurred his form on to newer heights. Antonio’s versatility and ability to score from anywhere in the box make him a tough target to mark, and he might be West ham’s most direct route to goal in this game.

    Predicted Lineup

Aston Villa predicted XI: Emi Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett; Mcginn, Douglas Luiz, Jacob Ramsey; Bailey, Ings, Watkins.

West Ham United Predicted XI: Fabianski; Creswell, Ogbona, Zouma, Coufal; Soucek, Rice; Benrahma, Fornals, Bowen; Antonio.

  • FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 10 – Defenders Watchlist

    FPL 2021/22: Gameweek 10 – Defenders Watchlist

The newest game week of the Premier League is upon us this coming weekend, and the thousands of Fantasy PL managers around the world are looking for the newest of ways to outscore their opponents. An important part of any successful Fantasy PL team is the rear guard, and we will list our preferred names when it comes to defenders you can pick for this weekend.

    Aaron Cresswell [£5.5m, AVL (A)]:

    Embed from Getty Images

The first name on our list is West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell. The Hammers have had a great start to their Premier League season, and are currently sitting as high as fourth place on the table – and much of that is because of their strong backline. And one of the ever-present names in their powerful rear guard is left-back Aaron Creswell, who has had an impressive start to his season as well. Priced at £5.5m, the Englishman has already racked up a goal and an assist apiece this season, helping his total Fantasy Premier League points tally to 45 points this season so far.

West Ham will travel to Villa Park on Sunday, a venue where they are unbeaten in their last three games. The Hammers are also unbeaten on the road so far this season, and a morale-boosting win over Manchester City on penalties in their Carabao Cup fourth round match on Wednesday will mean that West Ham will be up for the challenge to get all three points. David Moyes’ side has also kept four clean sheets in each of their last four games in all competitions, and will be looking to make it five from five this weekend – making Cresswell a logical pick.

    Ben Chilwell [£5.8m, NEW (A)]:

    Embed from Getty Images

The next name on our list is Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell. After a slow start to the season where he was used as deputy to Marcos Alonso as a left wing-back, Chilwell found himself restored in the starting line-up – and he has not looked back since. The English full-back has since found a golden touch in front of goal, having scored in his last three games in the Premier League. In fact, no other Chelsea player this season has scored more Premier League goals than Chilwell – his three goals in only three starts this season make him the joint-top league scorer for Chelsea.

His goalscoring exploits have helped Chilwell reach a tally of 35 points in this season’s edition of the Fantasy PL already. Besides his goalscoring numbers, Chilwell has also made four key passes and created four chances this season – and he is defensively no dud either, having racked up 11 clearances, five headed clearances and four interceptions. An away outing to Newcastle who have conceded the second-most amount of goals this season means that the league leaders might dish out a similar battering as last week, and one can expect Chilwell to be a part again.

The last pick on our list is João Cancelo of Manchester City. The Portuguese fullback has been one of the stand-out premium defenders this season, and a home outing against Crystal Palace this coming weekend makes him our top pick in defense. Cancelo has been City’s top scoring defender this season when it comes to Fantasy PL, and his total point tally of 51 points makes him one of the most trusted defenders you can pick this weekend. Cancelo is yet to score this season and has racked up a solitary assist, but goals and assists are not all there is to his game.

Cancelo is one of the most trusted cogs in Pep Guardiola’s well-oiled machine, being equally contributive to both attack as well as defence. Cancelo has made nine key passes and created 10 chances already this season, besides racking up 10 clearances, six headed clearances and 22 interceptions – making him one of the most complete defenders in the division. It also has to be noted that while City are unbeaten in their last five games against Palace in the Premier League, Palace are winless on the road so far this season – and that winless streak is most likely to continue.

Are West Ham capable of raising the bar against Manchester City? | Carabao Cup 2021/22

Four-time Carabao Cup winners Manchester City will be keen on moving further up the competition when they visit the London Stadium facing a promising West Ham United squad for their round of 16 EFL Cup tie on Wednesday. Both clubs head into the encounter on the back of impressive victories in the Premier League and will be keen on capitalizing on their impressive form going into the mid-week cup tie.

The hosts completed a comprehensive 0-1 victory over Manchester United in the third round of the competition last month, while the visitors netted six past Wycombe Wanderers in their first tie of the competition. Manchester City have been increasingly consistent since their 0-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at the start of the campaign, while West Ham continues to deliver promising results on the pitch – currently fourth in the league table.

Facing a club keen on winning their fifth-straight EFL Cup this season, West Ham will be hoping to halt City’s relentless form on Wednesday. While the Hammers remain outside favourites for the competition, a victory against the Cityzens could certainly result in a tectonic shift in the club’s ambition for silverware going into the campaign.

Do West Ham possess the quality to outperform Manchester City?

Although lacking squad depth, West Ham remains extremely capable of avoiding hiccups and causing upsets in unfavorable ties. David Moyes’ side head into Wednesday’s tie on the back of an imperative 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend, as they set look to maintain their three-game unbeaten streak across all competitions.

Having fielded a second-string team against Man. United in the previous round, Moyes is likely to entrust the same XI in producing a positive result on Wednesday. Although the Hammers have enjoyed success at home this season – boasting a perfect Europa League record – the club are yet to win a home game against Wednesday’s opponents in seven years. Besides, West Ham are yet to win a game against Pep Guardiola’s side in 12 meetings and have conceded 35 goals in the process.

While the visitors remain the foremost favourites for the competition, West Ham’s noteworthy run suggests they could emerge as the team capable of frustrating Guardiola on the touchline on Wednesday. With a few first-team players likely to find themselves in contention for the game, Moyes is expected to field the same XI that delivered a positive result against the Red Devils last month.

Owing to numerous changes in the starting line-up, the manager is expected to retain a strong bench, which could provide him with the personnel required to find a result against City mid-week. Expected to face a youthful City XI on Wednesday, the collective experience of players such as Mark Noble and Manuel Lanzini. among others, will be vital to West Ham’s chances of securing a positive result against the visitors. With the likelihood of first-team starters such as Michail Antonio and Aaron Creswell, among others, expected to be handed a rest, Moyes will be hoping to outplay a consistently fearless Man City side on Wednesday.

The presence of experienced players on the pitch combined with home support and the desire to challenge for silverware will be the driving force behind West Ham’s performance on the pitch on Wednesday. Though Moyes’ side remains underdogs going into the tie, a captivating start followed by a decent performance could certainly culminate into an impressive result for West Ham this evening.

Are Manchester City capable of producing a below-par performance?

While Manchester City have remained unbeaten in the competition for four consecutive seasons, in West Ham they face an opponent capable of impeding their record-breaking momentum in securing their fifth consecutive EFL Cup this season. Boasting immense quality within their ranks alongside captivating young talent, Guardiola is likely to field a competitive XI on Wednesday.

With Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez having missed out on City’s 1-4 triumph against Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend, both players will be expected to be involved in Wednesday’s tie against West Ham. Gabriel Jesus and Jack Grealish could, once again, retain their place in the starting line-up while youngsters such as Cole Palmer, Conrad Egan-Riley, and Oleksandr Zinchenko are likely to find themselves in contention for game-time on later this evening.

Although Guardiola is yet to fumble at any stage within the competition in his past four seasons, West Ham are certainly capable of frustrating any opposition on home soil. With the majority of the City’s defensive line expected to be handed a rest, West Ham’s tenacity in the final third could prove to be a point of difference on Wednesday. While Guardiola’s side seldom fail in earning the right to win a game of football, heavy squad rotation coupled with intimidating home support could prove to be a hindrance in his players delivering a rousing performance.

Nevertheless, given the difference in quality between the two sides, the visitors are likely to maintain their enrapturing form, thus, avoiding a dampening result on Wednesday. Despite facing an envious City side, West Ham will be keen on spoiling the part and emerge with the spoils of victory in their quest for silverware later this evening.

West Ham United vs Tottenham Hotspur: Preview | Premier League 2021/22

After the midweek European fixtures, domestic football returns again in the form of Premier League, and the circus continuous for yet another week. In what will be the 9th gameweek of the Premier League, there is a blockbuster clash between two London rivals. It is a clash between two clubs hoping to challenge for the top 4 places and Sunday’s outcome will be crucial in the race for the Champions League places. This weekend brings to us a battle between West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur.

West Ham United were last in action in the Europa League in the midweek, where they ran out deserved 3-0 winners. The Hammers were in full flow on Thursday night, as they dominated Genk at home, and goals from Craig Dawson, Issa Diop, and Jarrod Bowen made it three wins out of three in the Group H of this season’s UEL. The Hammers continued their perfect record of three wins out of three and no goals conceded in the group stages, gradually leaving their stamp on the competition, with manager David Moyes determined to win it. The Scot was able to rest his key players on Thursday, ensuring that his squad was fully fit and firing for the London derby on Sunday. Although the Hammers are said to focus fully on winning the Europa League, their league form has not been bad with the Londoners sitting 7th in the league, just a point off 4th place.

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking at Sunday with eager eyes as a way of getting back to winning ways. They endured a disappointing night in the Netherlands, as they fell to a 1-0 loss against Vitesse in the European Conference League on Thursday. That has left them in danger of exiting the third-tiered European competition in the group stages itself, as they sit 3rd now and 3 points off the top spot. There has been a gloomy atmosphere around Spurs after the pragmatic style preferred by manager Nuno Espirito Santo has been criticized by many.

They started well with three clean sheets and three goals in the opening three games in the league, including a win on the opening day against defending champions Manchester City. However, they fell off after a 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace, which was followed by two more losses against main city rivals Chelsea and Arsenal. Their inconsistent form has left them 5th in the table and 5 points below league leaders Liverpool. The manager and the fans are well aware of the fact that they need to be more consistent if they want to get back into the Champions League, and a win against West Ham on Sunday would be a key step in doing that.

West Ham have a triple injury boost ahead of Spurs’ visit to the London Stadium on Sunday. The Hammers could welcome back their main right-back Vladimir Coufal after his time on the sidelines, but will no doubt have to face a late fitness test before the game. Veteran midfielder Mark Noble could also be in contention for the squad against Spurs, after recovering from his injury and could feature from the bench. Ryan Fredricks is a doubt for the game on Sunday, and it remains to see if he’s passed fit. David Moyes named a few changes in their midweek Europa League game, with star striker Michail Antonio getting a well-deserved rest. He will be expected to lead the line against the Spurs.

Tottenham Hotspurs manager Nuno Espirito Santo named a weak side in their European Conference League game against Vitesse which they lost 1-0 away from home. He will be expected to name his strongest side here on Sunday. On the injury front, it’s all good news for Spurs, with no major absentees. It is unlikely that any of the starters on Thursday will make the starting 11 on Sunday, with the Portuguese expected to name the same 11 which defeated Newcastle United at the St. James’ Park last week.

    MATCH ANALYSIS

CAN THE HAMMERS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WEAK SPURS DEFENSE?

    Embed from Getty Images

Spurs under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo have not been as stable defensively as the Portuguese would have liked, with the team having the worst defense in the top half of the table. With an in-form attack of Antonio, Jarrod Bowen, Said Benrahma, Pablo Fornals, and others, West Ham will no doubt be looking to take advantage of the weak defense. They have the ability to hurt teams on the break, and under Moyes, their build-up play has been fluid. The Hammers have played an attacking brand of football since the start of the season, and it could continue again on Sunday.

Tottenham have conceded 12 goals so far in 8 games, and their pragmatic style of play has not worked out so far. Nuno Santo is known for his strong defenses, and he likes to build teams with resilient defence. However, at Spurs, it has not all gone to plan yet. They started well with three clean sheets but conceded 9 goals in the next 3 games, which destroyed the backline’s confidence.

Spurs are still struggling defensively, and have not found their best back 4, with Santo using different players almost every week. To be solid at the back, Tottenham needs to establish a backline that will play week in week out and as a result gel in together. With just 8 games played yet, the Lilywhites still have time on their side to sort out their defensive issues. They have conceded far too many sloppy goals, and a side like West Ham will surely capitalize on their defensive frailties to hurt them.

With much tougher periods yet to come, Spurs and Nuno Espirito Santo need to find a solution for their issues soon. With their attack not firing as well, there are many more issues which the Portuguese need to sort out, and if not resolved soon, could end up missing out on a Champions League qualification for the third year running.

    KEY PLAYERS

    Said Benrahma

    Embed from Getty Images

The Algerian forward moved to West Ham United from Brentford last season, after impressing in the Championship. However, his move did not get off to the best of starts with Benrahma struggling for game-time and finding himself on the bench most of the times. His woes continued further, after the Hammers brought in Jesse Lingard on loan in the second part of last season, and enjoyed a renewed resurgence with his arrival. This resulted in a very limited playing time for the 26-year-old, and many tipped him to leave the London club this summer.

However, with Lingard not signing on a permanent deal, and some good fortune, Benrahma found himself in the starting 11 at the start of this season and he took that opportunity with both hands. He was named in the starting lineup by Moyes against Newcastle United on opening day, and Benrahma repaid that faith with a goal and assist and an all-round brilliant performance. Benrahma followed that display with another goal and assist against Leicester City in the second game, endearing himself to the fans and the manager in the process as well.

Since then, the Algerian has continued his displays and is now a guaranteed starter in the league. Said Benrahma is now considered as one of the key players in the team and was rested on Thursday night, which all but confirmed his spot in the lineup on Sunday. He has some quick feet and can turn a defender inside out with his quick turn of pace. He can shoot well from outside the box and is gradually cementing his place as the chief creator in the West Ham team. Expect to see a lot of him on the ball on Sunday.

    Harry Kane

    Embed from Getty Images

Harry Kane had a very controversial summer, after a brilliant Euro 2020 championship, where he led his country to the finals but failed agonizingly short. However, his break was spent dealing with rumors about his alleged multi-million move to title favorites Manchester City. Although the deal did not go through, the English striker seemingly lost all the support of the fans and has had to build new bridges this season. He has had a pretty quiet start to life under new boss Nuno Espirito Santo, with the Portuguese manager more focused on the defensive side of the game. However, the Englishman still remains a very lethal striker and one of the best in the league. His status as the best striker in the league could be in danger, however, with West Ham defender Kurt Zouma claiming that Michail Antonio- the West Ham striker- is on par with Kane.

The Spurs talisman has not had a desired start to the campaign, with just 1 goal in 7 appearances, and will be raring to get going. He is known for his prolific finishing and with the form he is in right now, there will be ugly rumors rearing their heads again soon. As of right now, his club needs him and needs him sooner than ever. The club have scored just 9 goals in 8 league appearances, with 3 of them coming in last week’s game against. He will be expected to be on the scoresheet on Sunday, and get his team the three points.

    PREDICTED LINEUPS:

West Ham predicted XI: Lukasz Fabianski; Ben Johnson, Kurt Zouma, Angelo Ogbonna, Aaron Cresswell; Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek; Jarrod Bowen, Said Benrahma, Pablo Fornals; Michail Antonio.

Tottenham Hotspur predicted XI: Hugo Lloris; Emerson, Cristian Romero, Davidson Sanchez, Sergio Reguilon; Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp; Lucas Moura, Tanguay Ndombele, Heung-min Son; Harry Kane.

  • Can West Ham continue group domination vs Genk? | UEFA Europa League 2021/22

Can West Ham continue group domination vs Genk? | UEFA Europa League 2021/22

The Europa League is often overlooked because of its secondary status to the Champions League, but the same league is capable of throwing up some world-class and thrilling games of football, and it has proved that over the past few years. There may be a lack of big names in this league, but the quality of football has not deteriorated. One such clash that has the potential to give us a terrific game of football is the Group H fixture between West Ham United and Genk.

Genk travel to London on Thursday to take on West Ham United, in what will be the third game out of six for both teams in the group. The Hammers have been in fine form in the group, with two wins out of two so far and leading the group with Genk three points behind, level with Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb.

Both teams have had a contrasting run-in to Thursday’s fixture, and form could play a huge part on how the results turn out. Genk were dominated by Dinamo Zagreb in their last European fixture, while West Ham cruised to a 2-0 win and never looked in trouble. A win at the London Stadium would allow the Belgian club to go level on points with West Ham, but the Hammers have enjoyed an up-turn in form since last season, and look like a very hard team to beat.

    INJURY NEWS:

West Ham will be without Ryan Fredericks, while fellow right-back Vladimir Coufal is also a doubt due to a groin injury. Midfielder Mark Noble is expected to be available for selection after missing the weekend win against Everton with a hip injury. Summer signing Alex Kral is ruled out after testing positive for coronavirus and continues to recover in isolation. Croatian midfielder Tomas Soucek suffered an injury to the face against Everton on Sunday, which left him needing stiches across the face. However, he has been passed fit by Moyes and will be in contention to start on Thursday night.

Genk manager John van den Brom will be without right-back Daniel Munoz who is out after being given a red card against Dinamo Zagreb. He will miss the next three games, including the double-header against West Ham. Other than Munoz, there are no other players missing for the Belgian outfit, and the team arrives in London with all players fit and firing. The manager will be expected to put out a very strong 11, with a view to get the team back to winning ways.

WEST HAM TO CONTINUE THEIR DOMINATION IN GROUP H?

    Embed from Getty Images

West Ham United have had a perfect start to their Europa League campaign with two wins, four goals scored and none conceded. David Moyes and his men will be looking to continue their form against a Genk side which is struggling for form. Genk are on a three-game losing streak, and the Hammers will no doubt try to take advantage of that.

The Irons themselves are in a good form, having won 4 out of the last 5 games in all competitions, with just 3 goals conceded. Their run of form will have served as a confidence booster ahead of the game against Genk, and they will be hoping to make it three wins in the group to put them in the driver’s seat in the race to clinch top spot in the group.

For the first time in many years, West Ham have a squad depth which can enable them to challenge for trophies. They have a quality starting 11, and new additions over the summer, including Kurt Zouma, Nikola Vlasic and Alex Kral have ensured that the Hammers have more than enough options from the bench as well. This year, they have a real chance of winning the Europa League, and manager David Moyes has unsurprisingly given the competition a priority status, playing his key players in the first couple games.

Another factor that has helped Moyes’ men in their European campaign, is their solid backline. The West Ham defense has been immense in both games, having an xGA (expected goals allowed) of 0.3 in the first game and 0.4 in the second, proving that they have one of the best defenses in the Europa League. Summer signing Kurt Zouma has been instrumental in improving the defense, and backup defenders Craig Dawson and Issa Diop and Ben Johnson have all staked their claim to the starting 11 with their performances this season. This has seen an upturn in form and quality, prompting Moyes to brand this team as ‘the best team of his managerial career. ‘

With the form West Ham has been in, it is not strange that they are one of the favourites to go all the way in the tournament. If they are able to be consistent, David Moyes can well start dreaming about getting his hands on the first European trophy of his career.

WEAK GENK DEFENSE TO BE EXPLOITED?

    Embed from Getty Images

Genk have been in a poor form losing 4 out of their last 5 games, and the gaps in their team were obvious in their 0-3 loss against Dinamo Zagreb at home. The Genk defense has had a torrid time so far this season, in contrast to Thursday night’s opponents. They have been as porous as a sponge, conceding 12 goals in the last 5 games.

The defense is a major issue for manager John van den Brom. Against Zagreb, the backline was susceptible to many mistakes, conceding two penalties and a red card. Although the team started the game well, defensive mistakes allowed Zagreb to grab a stronghold on the game. The Belgians seemed vulnerable every time the Croatian opponents counter-attacked, and were lucky to concede just three goals. Fans were left shocked at the poor defensive performances Genk players put up, and will be hoping that the coaches and management can get the issues sorted soon. There is a fear that this could be a short-lived European campaign, if mistakes are not resolved soon enough.

Another glaring issue was the loads of space the Genk defense left behind, meaning that a well-timed run could have split the backline open. It was something that Zagreb and Sporting Charleroi- their most recent opponents- took advantage of. Against Charleroi, they were perhaps unlucky to lose, with their attack having plenty of chances to win the game by a large margin, but were thwarted time and again by a superb goalkeeping performance by opposition keeper Herve Koffi.

With West Ham boasting the likes of Michail Antonio, Nikola Vlasic, Said Benhrama, Andriy Yarmolenko and Jarrod Bowen in attack, Genk must be aware of the space they leave in behind. West Ham attackers are known for their rapid pace and wingers Bowen, Vlasic and Yarmolenko having the ability to leave defenders in their wake with their pace. Antonio has been in tremendous form as well, and must be licking his lips at the prospect of facing a weak Genk defense.

It remains to see how Genk can cope with a powerful attack and will have to put in a mighty effort to get a result away from home on Thursday night. It is a must-win game for both teams if they want to qualify top of the group, and we could get to see an open game at the London Stadium.

West Ham United vs Brentford: Match Preview | Premier League 2021/22

West Ham United hosts newcomers Brentford at the London Stadium on Sunday as the Irons look to penetrate the top four before heading into the international break. Both clubs head into the encounter on the back of impressive performances, with the hosts having won their second UEFA Europa League game mid-week and the visitors holding Liverpool to a draw last weekend.

Brentford proved their mettle against Liverpool as the Bees salvaged an impressive 3-3 draw against the Reds on home soil last weekend. A victory on Sunday would potentially launch in the top half of the table as they look to capitalize on their momentum following their remarkable outing in game week six. Meanwhile, the hosts heading into the encounter following a three-game winning streak across all competitions. West Ham have been amongst the most impressive sides since the beginning of the campaign, and three points on Sunday could take their tally to 29 points at home since the turn of the year – a record only inferior to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

Owing to a crucial juncture before the international break, both managers will be keen on taking three points on Sunday. Brentford will be hoping to maintain their impressive form, while the hosts will be desperate to add to their tally of victories, facing a formidable Bees’ defence at the London Stadium.

David Moyes will likely be without the services of Vladimir Coufal after the right-back suffered a groin problem before the mid-week Europa League tie while his replacement, Ryan Fredericks, too, will remain out of contention with a similar injury. Ben Johnson will likely be called upon to face Brentford at right-back following a decent outing in Europe.

Kourt Zouma, Pablo Fornals, and Tomas Soucek, among other first-team players, will likely return to the squad after a majority of the first team were rested in the mid-week Europa League tie against Rapid Vienna. The club’s highest goal scorer, Michail Antonio, will be keen on adding to his goal tally come Sunday.

The Bees will be without the presence of Ethan Pinnock at centre-back on Sunday, with Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgenson likely to replace him in the position. Mads Sorensen and Josh Dasilva remain out of contention, while Yoane Wissa may find himself in contention for a start following his impactful performance last weekend.

Thomas Frank is likely to field an unchanged line-up on Sunday following their impressive outing against Liverpool. Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbuemo are likely to be the focal point in the attack, with an organised team holding the shape behind the two attackers.

    MATCH ANALYSIS

    Embed from Getty Images

Three points remain crucial for both managers on Sunday as they look to maintain their impressive form heading into the international break. While West Ham have been amongst the most attacking sides in the league, the hosts are likely to be exploited on the right flank due to absentees in the right-back position. Meanwhile, Brentford will be hoping to maintain their defensive solidity and capitalize on their chances in the final third by attaching their strikers and finding space behind West Ham’s centre-backs upfront.

Both teams will be hoping to remain compact in the middle of the pitch and attack down the flanks at the weekend. The hosts will be heavily reliant on their creative players in the attacking third while the visitors will be keen on triggering counter-attacks and being progressive in possession on Sunday. While a draw may not dampen their starts to the season, both managers will be reluctant to settle for a point and remain keen on securing three points ahead of the international break.

    KEY PLAYERS

Michail Antonio – West Ham United

In contention to challenge for the golden boot following an astounding start to the campaign, Antonio will be hoping to add to his goal contributions on Sunday. The striker will be key to Moyes’ approach at the weekend, with the team likely to rely on his clinical finishing and ability to attract defenders in the final third at the weekend.

Facing a physically imposing Brentford backline, Antonio’s physicality and ability to hold the ball will be vital to West Ham’s goal-scoring opportunities in and around the box. Given his ability to take on defenders and movement within the box, the striker will be pivotal on set-pieces and in the team’s creative build-up at the London Stadium on Sunday.

    Ivan Toney – Brentford

Following a noteworthy performance against Liverpool, much like Antonio, Ivan Toney will be pivotal to Brentford’s attacking prowess against West Ham on Sunday. The striker has been impressive since the start of the season and will be hoping to capitalize on West Ham’s defensive weaknesses at the weekend.

Toney’s movement and drive with the ball will be vital to Brentford’s attacking prospects against West Ham. The striker’s link-up play and work rate could potentially prove to be a difference between the two sides at the weekend as the visitors look to cause an upset at the weekend.
