A lot has been said about French sensation Dayot Upamecano. Here I am looking at his stats from this season to judge whether or not he deserves the hype. Upamecano is currently playing his trade in Bundesliga for RB Leipzig.

Let’s start off with his offensive game, something that a defender isn’t renowned for. Upamecano is averaging an impressive 0.4 key passes per match while also attempting an average of 0.8 shots per game. However, he is yet to make a goal contribution this season.

To give you a perspective, Virgil Van Dijk is averaging 0.1 key passes per match in the Premier League this season. While attempting 0.6 shots per match. However the Dutch international has registered 4 goal contributions this season, all of them being goals.

Dayot Upamecano is on average attempting 76 passes per match with a pass success rate of 89%. He’s also completing 6 long balls each match, with a success rate of 64%. These are some elite stats for someone as young as Upamecano.

Comparing his stats with Van Dijk, the Liverpool skipper is attempting 82 passes per match in the Premier League with a success rate of 89%. He’s also completing 5.2 long balls per match with an impressive success rate of 55%.

The RB Leipzig Centre-Back is making a combined 3.9 tackles and interceptions per match with 2.3 tackles and 1.6 interceptions. While he is also making 3 clearances on average in every match he has played in the Bundesliga. He’s making 0.7 blocks per match.

Virgil Van Dijk, on the other hand, is making a combined 1.9 tackles and interceptions per match, including 0.8 tackles and 1.1 interceptions. His low numbers can be attributed to Liverpool’s domination in the Premier League which hasn’t seen him being challenged a lot.

Market Value: €50 million
Expected Fee: €45-60 million, his actual fee would depend on how badly he wants to leave.
Chances to join: Arsenal would surely go in for him except for a dramatic scenario where Pablo Mari actually turns out to be the next Van Dijk. However, with Bayern showing interest, Upamecano can be tempted away from Arsenal.
Expected to join: In the Summer.
