EA Sports dropped the FIFA 20 Premier League Team of the Season So Far on Friday and Mateo Kovačić was the only Chelsea player to make it into the team.

N’Golo Kanté, has always made the cut over the last few years, but he has struggled as of late due to minor injury niggles.

Mateo Kovacic has been one of the standout performers at the club this season. He has played a prominent role while in transition from defense to attack and in finding the forwards with accurate passes.

For every 10 take-ons attempted, the Croatian dribbled past an opponent on eight of those occasions. The ratio is not only the best of all the leading dribblers but also leads the Premier League even above the likes of Bernardo Silva and Adama Traore.

The midfielder made plenty of substitute appearances under Sarri last season and played in a rather restricted role, but has made 25 Premier League appearances under Frank Lampard this season where he has controlled the tempo of the game and has greater freedom of movement under the new manager.

Kovacic has repayed the trust the manager placed in him with his excellent workrate and desire to go on to become one of Lampard’s key men this season. While he only has one goal and five assists for Chelsea over two seasons, he is a key part of the team constantly bursting forward and has the stamina and fitness to contribute in both halves of the field by also tracking back when required. His rampaging runs allow him to surge past opponents and pick out gaps in the final half of the pitch.

The Croatian is only twenty-five and is entering the peak of his career, with his selection into the Premier League Team of the Season so Far indicating the impressive all round performances he has put in for Chelsea this season.
