Former Manchester City captain, Vincent Kompany has admitted that Virgil Van Dijk is the best Premier League defender of all time, despite his short duration in Liverpool. Although it’s a bit early to admit that but it seems the Belgian international is convinced.
“I would choose Virgil van Dijk as the best defender in Premier League history,” Kompany told British platform Sporf.
“It is a strange choice because he is not in the scene as long as boys like Terry and Ferdinand. Those boys have played in the league for a very long time, but the signals that Van Dijk gives in his last few seasons make it so clear that if he had gone to the absolute top before, he would be even further.”
Kompany who has played against Virgil van Dijk in the Premier League is in awe with the defender and has chosen him ahead of the likes of John Terry, Vidic, Ferdinand.
Van Dijk started his career at Groningen and switched to Celtic in 2013. In 2015, Koeman signed the defender at Southampton. After three successful years at St. Mary’s, he was signed by Liverpool in 2018.
Since then, he has taken the world by storm with defending. He has completely changed the Liverpool side that finished 4th in 2017-18 to title challengers. Kompany considers the Dutch captain as an amazing team player.
“He makes a huge difference to his team,” said Kompany.
“A defender never stands alone, it is about his communication with teammates and how you make your team stronger. The Liverpool before Van Dijk was there and the Liverpool after Van Dijk was a completely different team. That is why I choose him as the best defender from the Premier League ever.” he added.
