English former professional footballer Gary Lineker believes the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti has paved the way for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to develop into a top striker.

The youngster has been in a hot form since December, scoring eight goals in his last 11 games for Everton to take his league tally to 15.

One man who has definitely been impressed with Calvert-Lewin is ex-Toffees player Lineker, who poached 40 goals in his only season for the club in the 1985-86 season.

The once upon a time prolific striker has also claimed the forward can make it into the senior national team if he continues to develop.

“I like the way he’s improving, he’s combative, he holds it up well and can get in the box,” said Lineker. “He wasn’t scoring as prolifically as you’d like at the start, but he was a young player and with young players they either stay there and aren’t going to be quite good enough or they move on.

“And he is moving on nicely.

“Having someone like Carlo Ancelotti with his experience behind him, hopefully, he will blossom and become a possible England striker if he keeps working at his game and keeps improving.”

The former Three Lions forward also said it would be vital for the Toffees’ hitman to set targets for himself and pick up from where he ended before the suspension of the league.

“He needs to continue scoring at the rate he was,” he told the Official Everton Podcast. “If you put the numbers on the board, you cannot be ignored.

“You have to score more than anyone else and that was the key for me. Whether it was for my team or in the league, whatever the competition, try to score more than anyone else.”

Everton are back in action on Sunday June 21 with a Merseyside derby on the cards.
