According to Leicester City News’ Graeme Bailey, Steve Cooper’s position as Foxes boss is still under threat despite the 1-0 win against Bournemouth last week.
Leicester sit 15th in the Premier League table, three points above the relegation zone. The Foxes began this season knowing they were considered one of the likely teams to go back down to the EFL Championship. Although Leicester’s hierarchy won’t be too worried about their position now, they will be unhappy with how the team has played so far.
It took Leicester seven games to record their first win of the season, and the performances have been bland. TalkSPORT pundit Dean Ashton said that Cooper’s side lacked a clear identity, stating, “I am yet to look at a Steve Cooper side and know how they are playing, what is it that sort of sets them aside, and what he wants his team to do. “
Leicester City officials aware of supporters’ unhappiness
Cooper’s decision-making has caused great unhappiness among the supporters (although he has shown improvement lately), largely driven by the constant exclusion of fan favourites Ricardo Pereira and Abdul Fatawu. The club officials are aware of this and have reportedly told Cooper that he must win against fellow relegation candidates Southampton on October 19.
In his article, Bailey wrote: “The club’s hierarchy are aware of the supporters’ frustration, which first began when he was appointed as Maresca’s successor – following a breakdown in talks with Graham Potter.”
“The 44-year-old is under immense pressure and we are told his position could come under threat if City suffer defeat at Southampton after the international break.”
“Saints have taken just one point from their opening seven games so it’s imperative The Foxes put in a good display against one of the relegation favourites.”
Leicester thrashed Southampton home and away in the Championship last season, and Steve Cooper will aim for a similar result at the St Mary’s Stadium in around a week.
