Crystal Palace have been looking at Belgian right-back, Timothy Castagne as a possible replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka who left for Manchester United last summer.
Palace were pipped to sign the player with the money they received from the Wan-Bissaka transfer but the deal never really materialised last summer. It has been over nine months but Palace have yet to find a suitable replacement at right-back.
The 23-year-old is a versatile full-back and can play on either side of the pitch. He is a youth product from Genk and signed with Atlanta in 2017 as a direct replacement for Andrea Conti, who departed for Milan. Castagne made his Belgium debut back in 2018, as a starter against Scotland.
He made 37 appearances for Atlanta in all competitions last season, helping them finish third in the Serie A and in gaining Champions League qualification.
Castagne admitted in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport back in June last year that he would like to compete in the Premier League one day.
Crystal Palace will hope to sign the Belgian this transfer window to ease their defensive woes. However they will also face stiff competition from various other clubs like Celtic, Napoli and Tottenham, who are also reportedly interested in Castagne in order to strengthen their backline.
Roy Hodgson will however try to tempt the player to Selhurst Park by promising assured gametime, something which he may not get at Tottenham.
Till now, Hodgson has done a fantastic job lifting the Eagles out of the relegation zone with his experience providing them stability and re-igniting belief into the team, and once the season resumes they will aim to finish strong in the top half of the table.
