Tottenham Hotspur are the club shaking up the transfer market right now, with reports emerging about the club pursuing multiple signings. They are having a very busy month, and in less than a week since the window officially opened, the Lilywhites have already confirmed two signings, and are very close to making another one official.
While Fraser Forster and Ivan Perisic have already been added to the squad, the signing of Yves Bissouma is also set to be announced any day now, with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reporting that the Mali international has completed his medical with the North London club.
Tottenham manager Antonio Conte and Football Director Fabio Paratici have already turned their attention to other targets, with a few more arrivals expected in the capital.
Romano has reported that Spurs are reportedly in contact with Championship club Middlesbrough for the signature of highly-rated defender Djed Spence. The youngster shot to the limelight this season when he helped Nottingham Forest, where he spent the 21/22 season on loan, to promotion, and played a starring role in their rise to the top-flight of English football.
Naturally, his performances attracted a lot of attention, with Forest also said to be keen on retaining the right-back. However, Tottenham and Conte have made the Englishman a target, and are hopeful of luring him to North London with the riches of Champions League football. The Athletic reported that Spence has also expressed a desire to join Spurs, and the two clubs are in negotiations, with a fee of around £20 million expected to be paid to the Championship club. However, Spurs fans will have to wait just a little bit longer, with Romano revealing that there has been no official bid from the club for Spence as of yet.
Antonio Conte has chosen targets that can settle into his tactical setup and formation quickly and comfortably. Spence is just another example of that, with the right-back playing as a right wing-back for Forest for almost the entirety of the 21/22 season. He will be expected to occupy the same position in Conte’s setup, with the Italian’s preference to play with 3 central defenders and two wing-backs. Spence is very good offensively, with his dribbling ability and straight-line speed a marvel. However, he still needs to improve on his positional awareness, something that Conte will no doubt work on from the moment the 21-year-old reports for training.
There is more good news for Spurs fans, with a rumoured return of an old hero. Various reports out of England suggest that the Lilywhites are in talks with Danish midfielder and ex-Spurs player Christian Eriksen, who is looking for a club after his 6-month deal with Brentford expired. The former Spurs midfielder left the club for Inter Milan, where he was signed by, ironically, Antonio Conte. The Italian is now said to be keen on reuniting with the playmaker and bringing him back to his old club in North London.
However, it will not be an easy ride for Spurs to sign him, with various other clubs in talks with Eriksen. The 30-year-old has also been contacted by English giants Manchester United, with new manager Erik Ten Hag interested in bringing the former Ajax midfielder to Old Trafford. Besides United, Eriksen also has an offer from Brentford, with the Bees also eager to keep the Dane.
Eriksen is not new to the Premier League or Spurs and is still fondly remembered among the Spurs faithful. The 30-year-old made a remarkable return to form with the Bees last season after fully recovering from the cardiac arrest he suffered at Euro 2020.
