Liverpool are on a rampage this season as they look to finally lift their maiden Premier League title. Having dropped just two points this season after 23 games, Liverpool are looking just about unbeatable. Arsenal fans will be fearful of losing their record of an unbeaten season if the reds carry on playing like they have.

Near perfect Liverpool

Liverpool seem to have already wrapped up their title charge before the end of January. After 23 games, they sit on top with 64 points, a whopping 16 points ahead of second placed Manchester City and 19 points clear of Leicester City. All of this with a game in hand as well. They have dropped just two points until now, which was against Manchester United back in October at Old Trafford. Having now beaten United last weekend, Liverpool will be happy to exact their revenge and continue their tenable form.

Liverpool have had a few close calls in the league, but nothing that has truly placed any doubts over their mentality or determination. Aston Villa managed to push them close until Sadio Mane pulled off a moment of magic in the 94th minute to win all 3 points. Crystal Palace seemed to have salvaged a point against the Reds when Zaha equalised in the 82nd minute, only for Firmino to win it with a winner 3 minutes later. Similar to these two matches, there have been a few gritty games here and there, however, Liverpool have proven they are ready to end their 30 year old wait for the league title.

Set aside the points tally and the wins and the league position and watch Liverpool and they will still convince you of their prowess. There is just an air about them that screams champions. We often see a good title challenge fizzle out due to injuries and fatigue as the season progresses, but Liverpool’s entire squad is playing as if everyone starts every week. They recently lost Fabinho to an injury, meaning he missed not just the Club World Cup, but also a few league matches. While the Brazilian has been their best midfielder this season, they certainly coped without him, winning the Club World Cup and keeping their league form well intact.

Firmino-Fabinho

How can we not mention Roberto Firmino when we talk about Brazilians? The striker is often overlooked in the debate of the world’s best No. 9, probably because he does not score as many goals as other strikers. But if you consider the amount of work and help he offers to his wingers (and indeed his midfield), there is no one better than Bobby Firmino. It is no coincidence that Sadio Mane and Mo Salah have found their best form once they started playing alongside Firmino. He drops quite deep to get the ball, making plenty of space for his fellow attackers through the middle. Moreover, he attracts defenders, making it even easier for others to attack.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Liverpool’s true strength is in their bond, their rapport on the field and their cohesion. They play like a team ready to die for one another and therein lies their greatness. They are also spoilt for choice when it comes to leaders in their ranks. It is no wonder they have pretty much already written their name on the trophy before even January ends.

Can Manchester City Stop their Run?

Manchester-City-Celebration

Manchester City and Liverpool played out one of the most exciting challenges for the title last season. City ended up winning it with 98 points, while Liverpool had to settle for second place with 97 points. Many expected a similar season this time around, but Liverpool had other plans. While City struggled defensively when they lost Laporte, they have not even been able to keep within touching distance of the reds this season. Liverpool now sit 13 points ahead of second placed City, with two games in hand.

Liverpool did get a bit lucky when the two sides met in November, but they still won the game emphatically. The next clash between the two will be significant for another reason than just the spectacle it produces. If Liverpool manage to hold on to their unbeaten run, when they face City again, they will be fighting to make it 49 games unbeaten in the league. Yes that’s right, they will be playing to equalise Arsenal’s unbeaten run in 2004.

As an Arsenal fan it would be a sad day to see the Gooners lose out on their fabulous record. But if Liverpool do manage it, there is no doubt in my mind that they will deserve it. In all probability, they will also finish the season unbeaten if City cannot incur a loss on them. But Pep Guardiola and City are possibly the only team who can stop the Reds and their daunting form. Guardiola will surely want to inflict some damage on the Merseyside team, just as a prestige point if nothing else. But even that may not prove to be enough.

But all this is still some ways off, and for now, let’s all just enjoy this Liverpool team that is surely going down in history as one of the greatest teams to have played in England and Europe.
