Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Spanish club Sevilla over the transfer of defender Diego Carlos.

Steven Gerrard and the management are leaving no stones unturned to bolster the squad and the gaffer has already managed to make his second signing ahead of the next season. After signing Marseille’s midfielder Boubacar Kamara on a five-year deal, the former Liverpool legend has now signed Diego Carlos.

The 29-year-old center-back is on his way to the English top-flight as he has reached personal terms over a move to Villa Park. Since joining Sevilla from Nantes in 2019, Carlos has gone from strength to strength to become one of the most pivotal defenders for the Andalusian club over the past few years. Having played over 100 matches for the club, the defender now wants to have a taste of the English league under Gerrard.

Newcastle were almost set to make a swoop for the player back in January but the Spanish side wanted to keep the defender as they were still in contention for the top-four. The buyout clause was set at 75 million euros and it appears as though Villa have sealed the deal for an ‘undisclosed fee’ as per the club’s official website.

With Calum Chambers and Tyrone Mings in the CB position, the gaffer will have more options to rotate with the inclusion of Carlos in the squad. The 29-year-old has spent almost all of his time on the left side in the center-back position and has displayed the calmness that an experienced defender must possess during crucial games. Mings, who also happens to play in the very same position as Carlos may not be rotated by the manager considering he is the skipper and has displayed versatility as a defender. However, Carlos could be used on the right side rotating with Chambers and projecting his experience in the PL.

The defender could prove to be a necessary signing for the Clarets, considering the lack of reliable options in center-back. Carlos is a great shout indeed and could instil the manager with confidence as Kortney Hause in the same position has largely been inconsistent throughout this campaign. Mings could use some help and Carlos seems to be a fit for the position coupled with his experience. The lack of depth has created a defensive gap that could be filled with the coming Sevilla defender.

At 29, the defender could be entering his prime years and a transfer swoop at this stage of his career for Villa appears to be a decent move. Villa fans have a huge season ahead of them considering the fact that the boss is making all attempts to create a competitive side this summer. However, it remains to be seen which position would he eventually take over under Gerrard.

Gerrard’s side ended 14th in the Premier League table this season in his first stint with the Clarets only having joined back in November. The forthcoming season will mark his first full-fledged campaign with the PL club and immediately wants to turn the club’s situation around this summer before the next season gets underway.
