The race for the signature young Wigan striker Joe Gelhardt is heating up as Chelsea have now joined the likes of Tottenham, Liverpool and others in pursuit of the striker.
Premier League Clubs like Everton, Manchester United and Manchester City have also been monitoring the teenage striker. The 17-year old just signed a new contract with Wigan, and the club are already facing a battle to make him stay.
Although Gelhardt is only 17-years-of-age, he is already rotating around the first team. He has played 7 matches, for the senior team, coming off the bench in all the matches, and he managed to score his maiden Professional goal this season against Hull City in the Championship. The teenager also scored against Liverpool in a youth team game.
Wigan value Gelhardt at £5m plus add-ons. And by the looks of it, it looks like he could be on the move to a bigger club.
Liverpool have a massive advantage in the race as Gelhardt is a boyhood fan of the Reds. The England U-18 star was born in Liverpool and supported them. However, Chelsea have a good relationship with Wigan which opens up the possibility of a move to Stamford Bridge.
The end decision, however, lies in the hands of Gelhardt. At Wigan, he is involved in the first team and is getting minutes under his belt. That may not be the case when he signs for a bigger Premier League club, so it may be better for him to stay at Wigan for a while.
