Chelsea have started this transfer window positively with signings of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and now closing in on Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz. However, the Blues might be following the footsteps of their London rivals, Arsenal, and we are not talking about Arsene Wenger’s glory years of the early 2000s rather the later part of Wenger’s tenure at the Emirates which didn’t bring him much success.
The Blues have spent €106million on the signing of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech and they’re set to append another €90million on the signing of Kai Havertz. While they have also been linked with defensive recruitment in the form of Paris Saint Germain’s Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr, who’s now a free agent after leaving Nice this season. While Silva is one of the veterans of the game while Sarr is highly regarded in some quarters of the game, they’re still not on the same wavelength when compared to their offensive counterparts who are coming into the club with the likes of Havertz, Werner and Ziyech are seen as some of the most sought after names in world football.
Which seems very similar to how the Gunners used to operate in the latter years of Arsene Wenger’s tenure when they would be time and again found to be uncomfortably top-heavy and it seems the Blues might find themselves to be in a not so comfortable position considering that defence.
The signing of Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, however, is a sign of hope as Chelsea would successfully fill up one of their problematic positions in the defence for a long time with current options Marcos Alonso and Emerson failing to tie down a spot in the first team under Frank Lampard.
