Chelsea have opened a discussion with AFC Ajax star Andre Onana after a series of disappointing performances continue from their current number one Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Arrizabalaga’s errors have cost Chelsea on number of occasion this year and according to reports from The Athletic they are in talks to sign the Cameroonian International.
Onana’s current contract runs out in 2022 and the report suggest that Chelsea can acquire his services for just £27million.
Chelsea splashed a world record £72million to bring the Spaniard to Stamford Bridge in 2018. After a solid first season where he kept 14 clean sheets, he has suffered a massive dip in form keeping just 7 clean sheets this term.
He has looked nervous and sloppy on ocassions which led to Lampard dropping him to bench in favor of the 38-year-old Willy Caballero for 5 league matches back in February.
Onana is up for sale this summer as confirmed by AFC Ajax manager Erik ten Hag saying, “Based on their performance and their ambitions, a number of our players also want to settle abroad. Agreements have been concluded with André Onana, Donny van de Beek and Nicolas Tagliafico”
“For Onana and Van de Beek, another year with Ajax could certainly be an option, for Tagliafico, it’s slightly different because of his age.”
After signing Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, Lampard is desperate to bolster the defense after a poor display in the league where they have conceded 49 goals which the worst tally in the top half of the league table and signing Onana will be a step in the right direction.
