Borja Baston left Aston Villa last month to pursue a career elsewhere after six-months at the club.

Atletico Madrid youth product signed for Aston Villa in January on a free transfer. He started his senior career at Atletico Madrid but was able to make one top-flight appearance and was sent out on loan to Real Murcia.

He spent the next five seasons on loan at different Spanish lower tier clubs. However, in 2015-16, he impressed during his loan tenure at Eibar in La Liga and even won La Liga Player of the Month that season. Swansea signed him on a four year contract for a club record fee of £15.5m.

The 27-year-old couldn’t replicate his form and spent the next two seasons on loan at Malaga and Alaves. He was released in January and Aston Villa signed him. However, he made just two appearances for the Villans, both coming as a substitute. Borja barely played 20 minutes at the club and has now departed to pursue his career elsewhere.

“We had to decide if we were going to extend his contract or not but I felt with Ally [Samatta], Keinan [Davis] and Indy [Vassilev] there wasn’t likely to be a chance for him to be involved and I didn’t want to stand in his way of getting another club,” Dean Smith said ahead of their visit to Anfield.

Borja Baston is linked with a move to Spanish Segunda Division club Real Zaragoza and will join as a free agent. The club’s director Lalo Arantegui has already admitted that the club is interested in signing him. “Borja Bastón is very valued for what he did here and very appreciated by the fans,” Arantegui told La Jornada on Aragón TV.
