A shock wave went through Arsenal fans when it was reported by Sky Sports that David Luiz could leave the club as early as in June. Sky reported that the former Chelsea man could leave on free with his contract up in June this year. This came as a huge surprise to many football onlookers as it was believed that the Brazilian signed a two year long at Arsenal. The confusion around this particular rumour is understandable and thus we’re here to answer all your question.

Is the rumour true?

Yes, the rumour is true. While it was widely reported that Luiz signed a two-year-long loan deal, it has now surfaced that it was a one year deal with an option to extend for another year. And with the season officially coming to an end this June, he’s officially out of contract and is free to leave.

Where does Arsenal stand on this?

Arsenal are reportedly looking to extend his contract till atleast end of this season. They’re rather relaxed about his long term future.

We believe Luiz could also be sitting in a comfortable position. He has settled very well into red portion of London coming from the blue one and really rates Mikel Arteta as a manager. If offered a contract extension he should be signing. Though if not, there isn’t a lack of suitors for the former Champions League winner.

In a recent interview, he was quoted saying, “I always said that I would like to end my career at Benfica. In football everything changes, what is true today, tomorrow is a lie, but my feeling is not!”, he said.  “I want to wear the Benfica shirt again and feel that sensation. The day I come back to the Estadio da Luz it is going to be very special, one of the greatest feelings of my life.”

He seems to have his next destination sorted out.

Why would Arsenal want to let him go?

In footballing terms, it would be a disaster for Arsenal to let him go considering the kind of impact he has managed to have on the Gunners. Though when one takes into account the current pandemic situation and its financial implication then one might seem sone logic in Arsenal moving on 33-year-old who’s reportedly on a £100k a week deal.
