Chelsea scouts have been watching the Stuttgart midfielder who could replace the player they just suspended

Enzo-Fernandez-Chelsea

Chelsea have been regularly scouting Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller as a potential replacement for Enzo Fernandez, according to BILD, with scouts reportedly in attendance for Stuttgart’s 4-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen where the 25-year-old Germany international dominated proceedings.

The context is important. Fernandez is currently suspended by Chelsea after making comments in an interview that hinted at a desire to move to Real Madrid, a situation that has forced the club to begin planning seriously for life without their vice-captain. His agent Javier Pastore has pushed back, insisting Fernandez never explicitly asked to leave, but the relationship between player and club has been complicated enough to accelerate the Blues’ thinking about potential successors. Stiller is emerging as one of the primary names on that list.

Stiller is a deep-lying playmaker who has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most composed and technically assured central midfielders. He reads the game early, recycles possession cleanly and has the range of passing and positional discipline to dictate tempo from deep, which is precisely the profile Chelsea have been trying to stabilise their midfield around. He has also broken into the German national team setup, which gives him the international credibility that Premier League clubs typically look for at the €50m price level.

Stuttgart have placed an internal valuation of around €50m on the player and are aware that Premier League interest is intensifying. Chelsea are not the only English club involved: Manchester United made a late attempt to sign Stiller during the previous summer window, though it is unclear how seriously they intend to pursue that interest this time around. A move to the Premier League would significantly increase Stiller’s current salary, with earnings expected to at least double on his current €4.5m-per-year package.

Head coach Sebastian Hoeness has been clear about his preference to keep the squad together, and those words carry weight given he signed a contract extension in March. “If you want to go into a season as a contender for international competition, you should get to the point, from a sporting perspective, of keeping the best players,” he said earlier this winter. “For me, VfB hasn’t reached the end of its development yet. If I thought that way, I wouldn’t have extended my contract.”

The practical complication is timing. The World Cup this summer is expected to push major transfer business into the late window, meaning any deal for Stiller is unlikely to be concluded quickly. Stuttgart’s final league position and whether they qualify for European competition will also shape Stiller’s own thinking about whether a move is necessary for his career trajectory.

For Chelsea, the priority is resolving the Fernandez situation first. If that ends in a departure, the funds generated from selling a player signed for £106.8m would give them significant scope to pursue a replacement of Stiller’s calibre. If Fernandez stays, the calculus changes. Either way, BILD’s report confirms that Chelsea’s scouting operation has already made its view clear on who that replacement should be.
