Chelsea join the race for €30m Serie A defender but face serious competition from Tottenham, Atletico & Inter

Chelsea-Liam-Rosenior

Chelsea have entered the running to sign Lazio centre-back Mario Gila this summer, according to a report from Roma’s edition of La Repubblica.

The Spanish defender has caught the eye of some of Europe’s biggest clubs after a strong season in Serie A, and Lazio are confident that offers will come flooding in once the ongoing campaign concludes.

That expected price tag of €30 million alongside a €4 million net per year salary demand is quite an attainable financials for Chelsea but the West Londoners are far from alone in the chase.

AC Milan are currently considered the frontrunners, while Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, and Aston Villa are also said to be in the picture.

Tottenham and Everton have been linked too, making this one of the more competitive pursuits of the summer window before it has even officially opened.

He was sold by Real Madrid to Lazio in a move only aggregating to €6 million in July 2022. He almost went unnoticed in his early months for his new employers but he gradually went on to establish himself as one of the more underrated defenders in Serie A.

The numbers behind Gila’s season make a compelling case given that across 26 Serie A starts in the ongoing 2025/26 campaign, the 25-year-old has contributed to seven clean sheets while averaging 1.6 tackles, 4.5 ball recoveries, and 4.0 clearances per game.

His ground duel success rate of 2.6 per match sits alongside a solid 2.1 aerial duels won, and perhaps most impressively, he has not committed a single error leading to a goal all season.

For a centre-back being valued at €30 million, that kind of defensive reliability is exactly what clubs at the top end of the market are paying for.

He has been dribbled past just 0.4 times per game too, showing he reads the game well enough to avoid being caught in one-on-one situations.

Across 113 appearances for Lazio since his arrival, he has built genuine consistency, and this season in particular has been the one that put him firmly on the radar of clubs operating at a higher level.

Why Mario Gila transfer fits the defensive recruitment pattern at the Bridge

From Chelsea’s perspective, the interest makes sense. The Blues have been active in the defensive market in recent windows and are always looking to add quality and depth at the back.

Gila fits the profile of a player they tend to target given he is young but then he is also technically solid and still has that room to develop into a highly potential player.

His contract with his current employers runs until 2027, which gives Lazio a degree of leverage, but also means this summer is a sensible opportunity for them to get their finances out of his sale.

The financial side of the deal looks manageable for Chelsea. A €30 million fee and a salary demand of €4 million net per year are not figures that would stretch a club of their resources, particularly when the alternative is paying a premium for a more established name.

The question is whether Chelsea can persuade Gila to choose them over AC Milan, who are currently leading the race, or Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid, both of whom offer the prospect of Champions League football.
