Full-time in both: Arsenal won 2-1 at Slavia Prague and Manchester City beat RB Leipzig 3-2, with Erling Haaland scoring the winner, after Liverpool lost 3-2 at Fenerbahçe earlier on Wednesday night. Updated: 21:58 UK.

Three Premier League clubs were in Champions League action on matchday four. Liverpool went first in Istanbul at 5.45pm UK time, then Arsenal and City kicked off at 8pm, Arsenal at the Eden Arena and City at the RB Arena.

Aston Villa and Manchester United played on Tuesday, so tonight decided how the English clubs look with four of the eight league games gone. Here is how each game went, newest event first.

Slavia Prague 1-2 Arsenal (full-time)

Arsenal did the damage early in Prague. Noni Madueke opened the scoring inside ten minutes, set up by Viktor Gyökeres, and the Swede then got one of his own seven minutes before the break from Mikel Merino’s pass.

It was a long night for Slavia Prague, who came into the game with one point from three matches. Our Arsenal predicted lineup vs Slavia Prague asked whether Mikel Arteta’s attack could take an early grip on the game, and two goals before the break answered that. Wiktor Nowak’s goal in the 90th minute only made the last few minutes nervier.

RB Leipzig 2-3 Man City (full-time)

City went in ahead at the break thanks to a helping hand, an own goal by Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba eight minutes before half-time. That lead lasted barely four minutes into the second half, as Ridle Baku, already booked in the first half, brought the hosts level. City answered nine minutes later through Enzo Fernández to go 2-1 up, only for Antonio Nusa to level again three minutes after that. Three goals in 12 minutes, and then Erling Haaland found the fifth of the night with 78 minutes played to win it 3-2 for City.

Our RB Leipzig vs Man City preview pointed to a Leipzig side with three points from three games, and this defeat leaves them stuck on that total after four games.

Ryan Gravenberch had been ruled out of the trip with a fractured heel, and this is Liverpool’s first defeat of the league phase after three straight wins.

What tonight means for the English clubs

The top eight in the 36-team league phase go straight into the last 16, and after four of the eight games all three of tonight’s English sides sit inside that group in UEFA’s table.

Arsenal: the win in Prague takes them to ten points, unbeaten after four games. They are third, behind only Paris and Real Madrid on 12.

Man City: three points in Leipzig take City from six to nine, and they are seventh.

Liverpool: they stay on nine points, their first defeat of the league phase, and are eighth, the last automatic place, ahead of Club Brugge and Sporting CP, who also have nine.

Aston Villa: Tuesday’s game left them on nine points, and they are sixth.

Manchester United: also in action on Tuesday, they have six points and are 17th, inside the play-off places.

Arsenal and City win, Liverpool slip: a mixed night for the English

Four English clubs are now in the top eight, and Arsenal are the best placed of them. City showed they can win a wild one away from home, while Liverpool’s late collapse in Istanbul has left them with no margin for error over the last four games.
