Chelsea vs Manchester United on Saturday lunchtime pits two managers who are both staring at a third straight defeat in all competitions, and only one of them was widely expected to be sacked last weekend.

Chelsea host the Red Devils at Stamford Bridge on the back of a 2-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and a League Cup exit on penalties at Anfield. United arrive 16th, one point above the drop zone, on an eight-game winless run in all competitions.

Michael Carrick survived the 3-0 home hammering by Bournemouth and has been given time to turn things around. Xabi Alonso, meanwhile, is patching up a back line that keeps shipping goals.

Chelsea team news vs Man United

Three Chelsea players came off with problems at Anfield on Wednesday. Moises Caicedo was withdrawn in the 68th minute with what was described as a “little problem”, and Malo Gusto went off with cramp. Both should be fine for Saturday.

Maxence Lacroix is the worry. The £52m summer signing from Crystal Palace pulled up with a suspected hamstring injury just before half-time, shortly after Cody Gakpo’s equaliser from the spot, and was replaced by Levi Colwill. Alonso was not ready to put a timescale on it. “Too early to tell. Probably he felt something on the hamstrings. And we need a couple of days to check what’s going to be the injury,” the Chelsea boss said after the game. He is almost certain to sit this one out.

Lacroix joins a long list. Joao Pedro is out for a few weeks with a thigh injury, Reece James is not expected back in 2026 after knee surgery, Jamie Gittens has an ankle problem picked up with England’s Under-21s, and Emiliano Martinez is recovering from jaw surgery after his collision with Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite. That leaves 21-year-old Mike Penders in goal.

There is some good news. Pep Chavarria has missed the last three games with an unspecified injury but is stepping up his training and could be back in contention, and Cole Palmer is available again after serving his one-match ban for the red card against Spurs. Chelsea have nobody suspended.

Wesley Fofana, who gave away a penalty and then missed the decisive kick in Chelsea’s eight-round shootout defeat at Liverpool, is the obvious replacement for Lacroix alongside Colwill.

Man United team news vs Chelsea

The big call at United is already made. Bruno Fernandes was an unused substitute against Bournemouth after criticising Carrick’s tactics following the 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como, a saga covered in our report on the captain being dropped. The pair have since held clear-the-air talks, and Fernandes is expected back in the starting XI.

Carrick also shut down any talk of the armband changing hands. “He’s fully committed to this football club, he’s fully committed to making things better,” the United boss said. Asked whether the captaincy could be taken away, he replied: “There is no decision to be made on that.”

Kobbie Mainoo is back in training, though there is no guarantee he is ready to start, and Marcus Rashford remains a doubt. Luke Shaw (unspecified), Manuel Ugarte (knee), Patrick Dorgu (thigh) and Benjamin Sesko (shin) are all out, with Sesko ruled out until at least January.

Chelsea vs Manchester United pre-match tactical analysis

Chelsea‘s problem is at the back. Only Crystal Palace (19) and Ipswich Town (16) have conceded more Premier League goals than their 15 this season, and Alonso’s side are letting in an average of two a game at home. The seven goals they scored against Bournemouth and Everton after the international break now look like a false dawn.

Up front, Alonso has a decision to make. With Joao Pedro out, Danny Welbeck unconvincing at Anfield and Emmanuel Emegha not yet up to speed, Palmer is a serious candidate to play as a false nine in a 4-3-3, with Pedro Neto and Morgan Rogers either side of him. Jordan Henderson, Romeo Lavia and Caicedo would stay together in midfield.

United are expected to stick with Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba as the double pivot, with Fernandes returning behind Matheus Cunha. Noussair Mazraoui and Lisandro Martinez could come back into the defence after the Bournemouth game, with Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven the ones who may make way.

The numbers around United are grim. They have seven points from eight league games, their worst start since 1986-87, and they are still chasing a first away win of the season at the seventh attempt. History offers Carrick a crumb, though: United beat Chelsea twice in the 2025-26 Premier League, and Chelsea have won only three of the last 19 meetings in all competitions.

Chelsea vs Manchester United key players

Cole Palmer

Palmer was sent off for two bookings against Tottenham and watched the Anfield defeat from the outside. Back from his ban, he could be the man leading the line, and with Chelsea’s centre-forward options this thin, a lot rests on him finding space between United’s lines.

Bruno Fernandes

The 32-year-old has faced Chelsea 14 times in his career, winning five, drawing six and losing three, with five goals and two assists. After a week of headlines about his future, Saturday is his chance to answer on the pitch with a performance that backs up his manager’s faith.

Mason Mount

Mount was a rare bright spark in the Bournemouth defeat and should keep his place even with Fernandes returning.

Chelsea vs Manchester United predicted lineups

Chelsea predicted lineup (4-3-3): Penders; Acheampong, Fofana, Colwill, Hato; Henderson, Lavia, Caicedo; Neto, Palmer, Rogers

Manchester United predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Mazraoui, Maguire, Martinez, Dalot; Santos, Baleba; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Mount; Cunha

Verdict: Chelsea edge it, but not cleanly

United will create chances against a Chelsea defence without Lacroix, whether Fernandes starts or not. The trouble for Carrick is that his own defensive issues run deeper, and his side have not won away all season.

Expect the hosts to respond to a bad week at home. Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United.
