The midfielder who knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup is now being scouted by Everton

Everton-David-Moyes

Shea Charles, the Southampton midfielder who scored the late winner to send Arsenal out of the FA Cup quarter-final, has caught the attention of Everton, with the Daily Mail reporting that David Moyes’ side are among the clubs now scouting the 22-year-old ahead of a potential summer move.

Charles has been valued at around £20m, and Everton are not the only club keeping a close eye on him after his moment of FA Cup heroism. Manchester United have also been linked, with a cluster of Premier League sides now monitoring a player who has quietly been one of the more impressive midfielders in the Championship this season.

Moyes has built his Everton rebuild on intelligent, versatile players who understand their role within a well-organised structure. Charles fits that template. The Northern Ireland international can operate in a holding midfield role or centrally, and has also been deployed across the defensive line when needed. That positional flexibility is exactly what Moyes values, and it is no coincidence he is being compared to James Garner, who has been Everton’s standout performer this season.

Charles came through the Manchester City academy before carving out a pathway through the lower divisions. He spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, where he won their player of the season award after 44 appearances across all competitions. Three consecutive seasons in the Championship have sharpened him into a composed, confident operator who is clearly ready for a step up.

This season at Southampton he has played 28 times and scored four goals, including that decisive right-footed strike against Arsenal in the FA Cup that sent the Saints to Wembley. He is not just a tidy defensive midfielder. He arrives into the box at the right moments and has a genuine eye for goal, which adds another dimension to his profile.

Will Southampton’s Championship play-off push complicate the Shea Charles transfer?

There is a legitimate obstacle here. Southampton are still fighting for Championship play-off qualification, and if they win promotion back to the Premier League, the dynamic around any potential Charles sale changes significantly. A club heading back up to the top flight would have far less incentive to sell one of their key midfielders, and Charles himself might prefer to prove himself at Premier League level in familiar surroundings rather than moving immediately.

If Southampton miss out on the play-offs, however, Everton will fancy their chances of getting a deal done at a fee around the £20m mark. At that price, for a player of his profile and age, it represents the kind of smart, value-driven recruitment that has defined Moyes’ return to Goodison Park.
