The striker who couldn’t nail down a starting spot at Liverpool is now attracting Chelsea interest

Chelsea have made contact over a potential move for Darwin Nunez, with TEAMtalk sources confirming the Blues are one of several clubs monitoring the former Liverpool striker as his representatives work to secure a return to European football.

Nunez, 26, has been actively exploring his options since being dropped from Al-Hilal’s Saudi Pro League squad following the arrival of Karim Benzema. That moment was the trigger for his camp to begin sounding out clubs across Europe, and Chelsea have now emerged as genuine candidates after holding background discussions with his representatives.

Chelsea have a significant problem up front heading into the summer. Samu Omorodion, who had been identified as a priority striker target, is expected to be sidelined beyond the summer with a knee injury. Emmanuel Emegha, set to arrive from sister club Strasbourg, is not yet considered a certain first-team starter. Summer signing Liam Delap has not cemented his place in the long-term plans either, and is attracting serious interest from Premier League rivals with Chelsea unlikely to stand in his way if the right offer arrives.

All of that adds up to a genuine gap in Chelsea’s attack, and Darwin Nunez represents an experienced, physical and direct option who knows the Premier League inside out. He scored 40 goals in 143 appearances for Liverpool, a record that reads as inconsistent on paper, but one that masks the raw talent and athleticism that made him such a handful on his best days. A fresh start at Stamford Bridge, under a manager who can harness that potential more consistently, could be a compelling proposition.

Crucially, Nunez’s camp have made clear that personal terms will not be an issue. The Uruguayan is willing to take a significant wage reduction to secure the right move back to Europe, which removes one of the usual obstacles in deals of this nature.

Chelsea are not the only club in the frame. Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur were both approached earlier this year and retain interest going into the summer. On the continent, Juventus, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund have all registered their admiration, giving Darwin Nunez representatives a strong list of options to work with as they push to finalise his next destination.

The coming weeks should provide clarity. With his Al-Hilal situation unresolved and a long queue of interested clubs forming, Nunez’s summer move is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing transfer stories of the window.
