Chelsea are finally going after the Barcelona defender they missed out on five years ago

Chelsea are preparing an aggressive move to sign Barcelona right-back Jules Koundé this summer, reigniting a pursuit that stretches all the way back to 2021.

According to CaughtOffside, the Blues are readying a serious push to land the 27-year-old Frenchman, and the timing makes sense. Barcelona have reportedly made Koundé available, which is a notable development given his importance to the club this season. He has featured 41 times across all competitions, contributing three goals and four assists, and has been a key figure in a side that currently sits seven points clear at the top of La Liga.

Chelsea first tried to sign Koundé from Sevilla back in 2021 and came close, only for Barcelona to swoop in and seal the deal for around €50m. Five years on, they look set to try again, and this time the situation may be more favourable.

The right-back position has been a persistent problem at Stamford Bridge this season. Reece James is unquestionably one of the best in the world when fit, but the keyword there is “when fit.” He is currently sidelined with another hamstring injury and has been unable to offer the consistent availability that a title-challenging side demands.

In his absence, Malo Gusto has filled in but has struggled badly, most notably being hooked at half-time by manager Liam Rosenior during back-to-back Premier League defeats to Everton and Newcastle. That kind of form at a club with Chelsea’s ambitions is simply not good enough, and Rosenior knows it.

Bringing in Koundé would give Chelsea a genuinely world-class option at right-back and add serious quality and depth to their defensive setup. He is comfortable in possession, aggressive in the press and capable of contributing at both ends of the pitch. At 46 caps for France, his pedigree is beyond question.

That is the real question. Koundé is contracted to Barcelona until 2030, which hands the Catalans significant leverage in any negotiation. Chelsea will need to go in with a substantial offer to even open a conversation, and Barcelona are unlikely to let him go cheaply regardless of his reported availability. Any deal is going to be expensive, and both clubs will know it.

Chelsea’s willingness to launch what is being described as an “aggressive” approach suggests they are prepared to spend seriously. Whether Barcelona blink is another matter entirely.
