Liverpool are not considering a move to bring Jarell Quansah back to the club amid reports stating otherwise. The homegrown defender joined Bayer Leverkusen and has excelled since his £35 million move, but the Reds have ruled out exercising the buy-back clause in his contract. Liverpool have other ideas as they plan to strengthen their backline during the summer transfer window.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool have no plans to re-sign Quansah in the summer. The 23-year-old has been a solid performer for the Bundesliga giants, even earning his first call-up to the England squad midway through the season. While he could consider returning to his former side, Liverpool have no plans to bring him back as they are working on other things.

Liverpool are in the market to strengthen their backline as there are several issues in front of Arne Slot to solve. They made some necessary changes last summer that included the exit of Quansah. At the same time, the club signed young Italian defender Giovanni Leoni. The Italian suffered a season-ending ACL rupture in his very first game for the club in the Carabao Cup, which had some sections questioning their decision to sell Quansah.

Liverpool reportedly holds a buy-back option in the English defender’s contract. Recent reports stated they considered re-signing him next summer. Despite Liverpool planning on bringing in new defenders, they have reportedly ruled out the idea of triggering the buy-back clause in Quansah’s contract. Hence, there will be no move back for the Bundesliga defender ahead of the summer.

Quansah has impressed at Bayer Leverkusen since his departure from Anfield. His development in Germany has been positive and he has proven he can perform at a high level in one of Europe’s top leagues. His England call-up demonstrates the progress he has made since leaving Liverpool.

Liverpool defensive plans for upcoming window

From a defensive standpoint, Liverpool have already agreed a deal for Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, which potentially closes the door to adding another young defender. They are keen to add a senior defender as there are considerable doubts over the futures of their current seasoned stars. Ibrahima Konate might be leaving on a free, while Virgil van Dijk is not getting any younger.

Nottingham Forest’s Murillo is a target, while there are links to Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven, among others. Liverpool may have a plan to work on ahead of the summer to improve their backline in anticipation of a potential exit for Konate. The idea of bringing in a new senior defender in his place makes sense, possibly even two if multiple departures occur.

Reds focus on alternative defensive targets

Liverpool’s decision not to re-sign Quansah suggests they have moved on from that option entirely. The buy-back clause exists but will not be triggered. They believe their current targets better fit what Slot needs from his defensive unit.

The summer transfer window will be crucial for Liverpool’s defensive rebuild. They need experience and quality to replace aging stars while maintaining their competitive level. Quansah’s success at Leverkusen proves Liverpool’s academy can produce top talent, but the club has clearly decided his future lies elsewhere. Their focus remains on strengthening the squad with players who fit their long-term vision under Slot.
