Chelsea are closing in on a permanent sale of Carney Chukwuemeka to Borussia Dortmund, as talks between the clubs reach an advanced stage. The 21-year-old midfielder is not part of Enzo Maresca’s long-term plans at Stamford Bridge and has made it clear he wants to return to Germany. Chukwuemeka spent the second half of last season on loan at Dortmund and impressed enough to convince the Bundesliga side to pursue a full transfer.

Negotiations had initially stalled after Dortmund proposed a loan with an obligation to buy, an offer Chelsea reportedly labelled “insulting.” However, a breakthrough now appears imminent. According to Fabrizio Romano, both clubs are close to agreeing on a deal worth €20 million plus add-ons, with Chelsea also securing a percentage of any future sale.

Chukwuemeka joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2022 for a similar fee but struggled to establish himself due to recurring injuries. He has made just 32 appearances for the Blues in two years. During his loan spell in Germany, he managed one goal in 17 appearances and earned praise from Dortmund manager Nico Kovac, who remains keen to bring him back permanently.

The potential sale of Chukwuemeka reflects Chelsea’s broader transfer strategy this summer. With Maresca reshaping the squad, several fringe players are being moved on to streamline options and generate funds. Chukwuemeka’s departure is part of that restructuring, especially given the midfielder’s limited role and strong interest from abroad.

Juventus had shown interest in a loan deal, but Chelsea stood firm in their preference for a permanent sale. Three other clubs were also believed to be monitoring the situation, but Dortmund’s push for a reunion and the player’s preference has tilted negotiations in their favour.

Chukwuemeka may not be the only Chelsea player heading to Signal Iduna Park this month. Teenage defender Aaron Anselmino is also close to joining Dortmund on loan. The Argentine has reportedly agreed to the move, which could see him gain valuable first-team experience at Champions League level.

Chelsea had been undecided about Anselmino’s immediate future, but a temporary switch to Germany now looks likely. With Dortmund keen to add depth, especially in defensive areas, and Chelsea prioritising player development, the deal aligns with both clubs’ needs.

Chukwuemeka’s exit marks a sensible outcome for Chelsea, Dortmund, and the player himself. The Blues secure a respectable fee and future upside, Dortmund gain a young midfielder with Bundesliga experience, and Chukwuemeka gets the regular football he craves. With Maresca’s rebuild in full swing, more exits may follow before the window closes.
