Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has spoken out in defence of Alexander Isak, as the Newcastle United striker’s standoff with the club intensifies. Isak is pushing for a summer move to Liverpool, with one offer already rejected by the Magpies. His absence from the squad against Aston Villa and reports of solo training have fuelled speculation, but Tomasson insists the situation is not as simple as it appears.

“Alex is an extremely professional player,” Tomasson told Fotbollskanalen. “He’s a fantastic character and personality. I’ve spoken to him a lot during this period.”

The Sweden coach cautioned against quick judgement, describing the scenario as “extremely complex” and influenced by internal politics. While Tomasson admitted he does not know the full picture, he reiterated Isak’s professionalism and urged patience from the public and media alike.

Isak’s future at St James’ Park remains uncertain. Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe maintains the 25-year-old can still have a role in the team. “Nothing has changed,” Howe said. “The door is open. He has to decide what he wants to do.” Despite the public stance, there is a growing sense that Isak’s relationship with the club is under serious strain.

Fans voiced their discontent during the draw with Aston Villa, directing chants at Isak for being “greedy.” However, his motivations appear to go beyond finances. Those close to the player suggest he is driven by a desire to compete for major trophies, something Liverpool can realistically offer given their recent record. The contrast in ambition may be key to his push for a move.

Sweden face World Cup qualifiers next month against Slovenia and Kosovo, but Isak’s involvement may depend on whether he regains match sharpness. Tomasson acknowledged the issue but remains optimistic. “There is time,” he said. “We’ll have a good chat, and hopefully he will be back in team training soon.”

With Liverpool monitoring the situation closely and Newcastle reluctant to sell, the saga shows no signs of ending quietly. A resolution is needed quickly, for both club and player, to avoid further disruption ahead of the new season.
