Following Sean Longstaff’s £15 million move to Leeds, Newcastle are now reportedly eyeing Mahamadou Doumbia as a potential replacement. Africa Foot suggests that Howe is a significant admirer of the 21-year-old midfielder.

Doumbia currently plays for Royal Antwerp and has a release clause of €20 million (£17.4 million). Newcastle have reportedly already contacted the Malian’s representatives to discuss a possible transfer this summer.

Mahamadou Doumbia featured in 34 games last season, contributing three goals and two assists. He also accumulated nine yellow cards, showcasing his combative style in midfield.

While Doumbia is a central midfielder like Longstaff, his potential arrival would serve a different purpose. Longstaff’s opportunities were limited last season, with Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Joelinton often preferred in the starting lineup. As a result, Howe is reportedly seeking a player who won’t immediately demand a starting role.

Howe needs someone who can develop and provide squad depth. Doumbia, at 21 and with no Premier League experience, fits this profile perfectly. This would allow him time to adapt to the league’s demands.

The Mali international represents a more developmental option. He could provide cover and competition for places without disrupting the established hierarchy in Newcastle’s midfield. In contrast, Longstaff sought more regular first-team football.

This approach also allows Newcastle to manage their squad effectively. They can integrate young talents while relying on established players to maintain performance levels.

Premier League club looking to improve midfield options

The pursuit of Mahamadou Doumbia signals Newcastle’s intent to build a deeper and more versatile squad. It also demonstrates a clear strategy of blending experienced players with promising young talents. The Magpies are planning for both immediate success and long-term growth.

Newcastle will likely face competition for Doumbia’s signature. The midfielder’s release clause makes him an attractive target for several clubs across Europe. Newcastle must act swiftly to secure his services if Howe sees him as a key addition.

Securing Mahamadou Doumbia would represent smart business for Newcastle. It would bolster their squad depth and add a promising young player with significant potential. It remains to be seen whether they will trigger his release clause and bring him to Tyneside.
