Newcastle United have made their move for Axel Disasi, with reports claiming they’ve opened negotiations to bring the Chelsea defender to St James’ Park this summer.
The French centre-back spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, but things never quite clicked. He only made ten appearances and ended up back at Chelsea with his future uncertain.
Now, Chelsea are actively trying to offload Disasi, and Newcastle have stepped to the front of the queue.
Newcastle want Disasi and talks have begun
According to CaughtOffside, Newcastle have already held initial discussions with Chelsea over Disasi, and the Magpies are now considered frontrunners in the race.
Chelsea want €35 million for the defender, but Newcastle are hoping to negotiate that down to €30m. Given how things have gone for him at Stamford Bridge, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they succeeded.
Disasi joined Chelsea from Monaco for around £39m in 2023 and actually started well under Mauricio Pochettino. But once Enzo Maresca took over, it quickly became clear he wasn’t in the new manager’s plans.
He played just three times in the Premier League before being shipped off to Villa in January.
Disasi prefers Premier League stay despite overseas interest
Aston Villa were thought to be keen on keeping him permanently, but no follow-up offer has arrived.
Meanwhile, Juventus and Villarreal have both been linked, but Disasi is said to favour staying in England, which gives Newcastle a major boost in the chase.
At 27, with solid experience in France and England, he’s an ideal profile for a club like Newcastle looking to add depth and quality to their backline.
Chelsea clearout continues as Renato Veiga exit looms
Disasi won’t be the only defender leaving Chelsea this summer.
Renato Veiga is also expected to move on after a brief and uneventful stint at Stamford Bridge. He joined from FC Basel and was supposed to back up Marc Cucurella, but wanted to play centre back and ended up on loan at Juventus.
Now Bayern Munich are circling, and Chelsea are reportedly asking for €30m for the 21-year-old Portuguese defender.
