Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has confirmed a double injury blow for his team following their emphatic 4-1 victory over Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Villa took a first-half lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium through Morgan Rogers, and the visitors went into halftime up 1-0. Spurs bounced back strongly in the second half, with Brennan Johnson getting the leveller in the 49th minute. A quick-fire Dominic Solanke gave the hosts a two-goal advantage before James Maddison added a fourth in stoppage time. It was an excellent response to last week’s defeat against Crystal Palace, with Spurs jumping to seventh on the table.
However, it was not a perfect game for Tottenham, as they saw two of their players injured and taken off during the game. Cristian Romero appeared to have hurt his right foot while tackling Rogers and received treatment on the pitch before being substituted. Twenty minutes later, substitute Richarlison was taken off after pulling his hamstring.
Tottenham Hotspur already short on centre-backs
Romero’s injury is especially worrying. Spurs are already short on centre-backs with Micky van de Ven sidelined for a month. Postecoglou stated after the game that the situation wasn’t “ideal”, and he hoped that the injuries were not major.
“Yeah, I know Richy (Richarlison) obviously felt something in the action of setting the goal up, his hamstring, so we’ll see. Romero, yeah, it was in that challenge again. He felt his foot was sore. I don’t have any sort of further information. Obviously, he’s a pretty tough cookie for him to come off, it must be sore, but yeah, look it’s not ideal. But again it’s another game where we’ve had to reshuffle our back line.
“Radu (Dragusin) has played left centre-back, right centre-back, left centre-back, right-centre-back, Ben Davies has had to come in at different times and Destiny (Udogie) midweek and the boys are handling it really well. As I said, it’s not ideal, but hopefully, both are not too serious.”
