Levi Colwill, the highly rated 20-year-old, has recently been in the spotlight due to the delay in signing his contract extension with Chelsea. This has attracted the interest of both Liverpool and Brighton, who are closely monitoring his situation with a potential move in mind.
Following an exceptional breakout season on loan at Brighton, Levi Colwill has just secured victory in the Under 21 Euros. As previously mentioned, Chelsea has received several bids, notably a substantial £30 million offer from Brighton. However, the bid was promptly rejected as Mauricio Pochettino expressed his desire to retain Colwill at Chelsea.
Liverpool are also being touted as one of the main contenders for Colwill’s signature. The Reds have been struggling defensively for quite some time now. Virgil van Dijk seemed exhausted last season, and Joel Matip has lost the form that once made his partnership with Van Dijk one of the best in the league. Joe Gomez tends to make mistakes whenever he is on the field, and it will take him a long time to become a regular starter for Liverpool.
On the other hand, Jurgen Klopp is attempting to move Trent Alexander-Arnold into the midfield, which would require a change in formation. The preferred 4-3-3 system would be reworked into a 3-2-2-3 formation with a box midfield, and new signings Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai would have more advanced roles.
This leads to the task of having three out-and-out center-backs, a strategy employed by Arsenal and Manchester City last season.
Virgil van Dijk is certain to start as one of Liverpool’s center-backs, and another name likely to be in the starting eleven is Ibrahima Konate, who has shown significant improvement and become an integral part of the team. However, given the current situation, it is highly unlikely that Gomez or Matip would start if this new formation is implemented. Jurgen Klopp needs a proper center-back, preferably a left-sided one.
Another reason for going after Colwill is that he is a homegrown talent who might come useful if Liverpool eventually decides to offload Joe Gomez.
While for Chelsea, they would not want another Mason Mount saga. Levi Colwill, same as Mason Mount is a Chelsea academy product and they don’t want to let him go. Pochettino talked with Colwill regarding his position in the pecking order at the club because he wants minutes under his belt. He hasn’t starred for Chelsea yet but would rather prefer to stay at his boyhood club if given a sufficient amount of game time.
Colwill’s preferred position is the left-sided center-back. But there has been competition getting in his way. Chelsea’s purchase of Benoit Badiashile who joined from Monaco for 13 million will provide Colwill tough competition.
Introducing a left-sided center-back is precisely what Klopp may be considering. Robertson is a natural left-back, but often acts as a wing-back, pushing forward whenever possible. This leaves the defense vulnerable, with only two defenders, resulting in Liverpool conceding a significant number of goals. Levi Colwill’s potential move to Liverpool makes sense for more than one reason.
It remains to be seen where this rumour goes though – it wouldn’t be a surprise if Chelsea offers him massive wages and he’d sign an extension. Any links to Liverpool seem bleak at the moment, although that being said there are pictures of a young Levi circulating donning the Liverpool badge – so that could indicate this is his boyhood club, maybe. While Brighton & Roberto de Zerbi are building a massive team and an exciting project that Colwill has already experienced which could mean Liverpool are the third favourites in the order behind Chelsea and Brighton if odds are to be considered for Colwill’s future.
