From Gambia to the Premier League. That’s not a route usually taken by many players and for a reason. The step-up is just too big and a deal for any player would represent a huge gamble. Therefore, Adama Bojang is definitely a special prospect.
The 20-year-old striker is reportedly the apple of the eye of Premier League elites, including Newcastle, Manchester United, and Liverpool among others.
So, who is Adama Bojang? Why is there such a clamour to sign a 19-year-old from the Gambian First Division? Here are all the answers:
Who is Adama Bojang?
Adama Bojang is a centre-forward who turns out of Steve Biko FC in the Gambian First Division. His is a true rags-to-riches story. Bojang is the talisman of his side, who he helped achieve promotion from the second division in 2021.
Currently, they sit securely in the mid-table, after getting established in the first division, mainly off of Bojang’s goalscoring exploits.
Adama Bojang burst onto the scene in January 2023, when he scored a hattrick, the first by any player in the season, in a 4-1 win against Brikama United.
Since then, he has kept up is goalscoring form for club and country, turning the eyes of elite clubs outside Africa.
Adama Bojang stats
Adama Bojang’s stats speak of a player who lives for scoring goals. He has scored six goals in eight appearances for the Gambian U20 team. His breakout game came during the U20 African Cup of Nations when he scored a hattrick against South Sudan in the quarterfinals.
Stats for the Gambian First Division are not available at this time but his performances against arguably better level of opposition at the international stage show why he is so highly rated.
Playing style
Just like his stats, it is difficult to ascertain his playing style from the limited footage available of the player. Still, some basic observations can be made.
Firstly, he is an absolute physical specimen. Standing at 6’3″, he is nicknamed “The Gambian Hurricane”. It is because he is a freight train when he is running at full speed.
Like Erling Haaland, it is borderline unfair to have that pace in a body that big, but Bojang is blessed with both. He could be immediately ready to play a part in the senior team and make an impact based on his physical gifts alone.
Then there’s the smell of the goal. Bojang shows good anticipation skills and composure when presented with chances. He only needs a single invitation to get a shot away and does so with power and precision.
Currently, his game is very one-dimensional, where he can overpower opponents and score goals, but not do much more. One would presume that with better facilities and coaching, his physical gifts can be harnessed completely by adding a technical mix to it.
Adama Bojang transfer
Bojang has his pick of the clubs he wants to go to. Pretty much half of the Premier League is interested in his services. From proper elites like Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United, to emerging elites like Newcastle and lower-half clubs like Wolves, he can choose the path he wants to take.
Reportedly, Bojang favours a path which will take all these clubs out of the running. The Gambian sensation prefers a move to the Bundesliga.
It is an astute choice by the prodigy, as Bundesliga’s end-to-end style and the focus on pressing football will be most suited to his raw game at this stage. Furthermore, Germany has a great record of welcoming players from the African continent and them thriving in the country. Bojang is young enough that he can afford to take small steps towards greatness.
An improved Bojang, with the experience of European football under his belt, would be a much more enticing prospect for Premier League sides. A move to Bundesliga now, away from the bright lights of England could be just the right move.
Available for a sum of just £2.6 million, expect a tough bidding war for him as teams try to tempt him with their project. Gambia is set to have its next superstar after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and it remains to be seen where his first foray into European football is.
