According to Spanish journalist Toni Juanmarti, Barcelona are set to open talks with Tottenham Hotspur regarding the sale of French defender Clement Lenglet, a player who spent the last twelve months on loan at Spurs
It was officially confirmed yesterday by Tottenham that Lenglet will be leaving the club and return to Barcelona following the conclusion of his loan spell. Spurs did not have a buy option included in his original agreement and it comes as no surprise that he was sent back.
Barcelona and Xavi Hernandez see no future for Lenglet at the Catalan club and the club are more than willing to open talks with Tottenham to see if they can reach an agreement for his sale. The La Liga winners would take anything in the range of 10-12mil for the centre-back.
Lenglet provides a very curious headache for Tottenham. He did not have an outstanding season for the club but he almost always did his job without a fuss. His performances were solid but not spectacular and he is a class above most of the centre-backs at the club, except for Cristian Romero.
However, we must remember that the Barcelona defender was an Antonio Conte signing and all the good work that he did was as a part of a back three that the Italian deployed. What Ange Postecoglou wants to do at the club is going to be as different as night and day.
There is no doubt that Tottenham are looking to sign players to bolster the defence but it is up to Postecoglou to decide if he indeed thinks Lenglet is the man. The Australian loves for his teams to play out of the back and the Frenchman is definitely the best defender we have right now when it comes to just this.
Having played at Barcelona, Lenglet is no stranger to build up and making line breaking passes and runs with the ball at his feet. These are virtues Postecoglou will undoubtedly appreciate but Lenglet’s defensive acumen will leave a lot to be desired.
Barcelona are desperate to get Lenglet off their books and at the right price, he’d be a solid acquisition for Tottenham to get. Having spent the last 12 months here, he’ll know about the club and wont need time to get aclimatized to English football.
Tottenham and Postecoglou must really consider doing this deal but only at the right price. Lenglet is still relatively young and would be a good rotation option and a possible starter if he steps up his game. We need players like him to challenge for trophies.
The current Tottenham defence is wobbly and the names do not inspire much confidence. Lenglet doesnt inspire much confidence either but getting him in along with a couple of other solid centre-backs could sort out our defence for the foreseeable future. Lets see what Postecoglou thinks of the Frenchman
