Thomas Tuchel’s Blues have been in the United States for the past two weeks preparing ahead for the new season. There is still a lot of time for the transfer window to close and Chelsea aren’t done yet with their transfer business. The signing of Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly for a combined fee of less than 90 million pounds is a great piece of business conducted by Interim Sporting Director and Co-Controlling Owner Todd Boehly. With key areas yet to be strengthened, the owners and Tuchel are also looking to offload players to reduce the wage bill and make space for new signings.
Timo Werner is a player who has been in the spotlight throughout his time at the West London club and is reportedly a player Tuchel is ready to let go. The German hasn’t been at his best during the 2 years at the West London club and displayed his dissatisfaction at the club during the post-match press conference against Club America.
The player said, “It is hard to say (if clear the air talks are needed). “First of all, the most important thing is that I am happy. I am happy when I play and score goals. That’s the fact. That’s what I should take care of and the other things will come.”I could be happy everywhere. It is hard to say (why I’ve struggled for game time). “I didn’t ask but I think of course the manager always has different ideas, different thoughts and what you need in different games, I think in many games I was not in his thoughts so I try to change that. The striker certainly seems to be out of favour under the manager and is seeking more playtime which the German manager cannot guarantee and the arrival of Raheem Sterling has further put Werner down the pecking order.
Tuchel’s 3-4-2-1 system has pushed Timo Werner onto the left wing rather than playing centrally. Despite being comfortable playing on the left side of the attack, the striker has failed to impress. He has just managed to score 10 goals and assist 13 times in 56 appearances for the Blues and has been terrible in front of goal. His hysterical misses have been a regular occurrence despite the player’s determination to turn things around.
Should Chelsea cash in on Timo Werner?
It seems the best decision for both the player and the club to part ways this summer. The club would save over 250k in wages and sign an attacker which suits Tuchel’s system using the data-driven approach being adopted by Boehly and Co. in identifying transfer targets this summer. For Werner, the player can move on to a club wherein he would be a guaranteed position and play in his preferred position as a no.9.
It is unfortunate that things haven’t worked out for Timo who is still a fan favourite despite his misses. His work-rate and never give up attitude is widely loved by the Chelsea fanbase, something which gave the fans hope things could turn around.
Juventus and Borussia Dortmund are the two European clubs linked heavily with the player. The Italian teams were rumoured to be asking for the German in exchange for De Ligt in a player plus cash deal which didn’t materialize earlier in the summer with the Dutch defender moving to Bayern Munich. The Turin club could yet return to strike a deal with Chelsea to solve their striking problems at the club after the departures of Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata.
Werna has not live up to expectations and therefore should not be considered. He should be sold
